Need advice on Wisdom Teeth please...

Posted on 03/13/2014 11:13:45 AM PDT by Java4Jay

My daughter is being told the Wisdom Teeth on her lower jaw need to be removed. See thread for pics. I've read there are pros and cons to having them removed. She is 25 and they haven't caused her any problems as of yet. Your input would be greatly appreciated, thank you.

Eons ago when I was a young adult my dentist told me that if my wisdom teeth weren't causing any problems, leave 'em be. They had never grown out of the gums.

He said my jaws were wide enough to accomodate any growth. They never popped up....and I've never had a problem and never will.

I am 45 and have all four of my wisdom teeth for a total of 32 still in my head. My wisdom teeth really haven’t crowded my teeth out of alignment but it is difficult to floss because m teeth are tight together. If a person doesn’t have a big jaw, which I do, they should have wisdom teeth removed.

I was just a bit older than your daughter and went in for my semi annual cleaning years ago. I asked the dental hygienist if there was any sign of my wisdom teeth coming in. She said I already had all four and with the length of my jaw, I had room for four more molars back there. If they are not impacted, let them be.

My advice would be for her to get them all extracted at once. At the very least, it’ll keep her other teeth from crowding. I had all mine pulled in my early 30s, but it was too late to keep one from growing in sideways and others coming in crooked. Best of luck to her.

I’m an adult who let them go. The pain subsided, but now at age 37 the rot is kicking in. And the rot is just unbearable. A bad situation got worse.

Get them pulled. By any means necessary.

Is there a dental college nearby. It would be a good place for a second opinion and also may have a faculty-student clinic where dental work is less expensive. Don’t be afraid to ask for a second opinion or to price shop.

Count me in as a big chicken as well. I am 52 years old and still have all 4 of mine. I haven’t had any problems aside from cavities in them.

All the wiser?!

I never got wisdom teeth on the bottom. Had to have the top ones pulled though because they kept growing and were cutting into my gums on the bottom.

I should have added the word “yet” to the last sentence.

My nephew is entering the Navy in July. He was told to make sure he had his wisdom teeth removed before he got there or they would do it for him.

I read somewhere that in the UK with their National Health Insurance it could take over 2 years to have a tooth removed.
