NEW YORK – Ray Guy has become the first punter elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

Joining the long-time Oakland Raider were two first-time eligible players, linebacker Derrick Brooks and offensive tackle Walter Jones.

The class of 2014 also included defensive end Michael Strahan, receiver Andre Reed, defensive back Aeneas Williams and defensive end Claude Humphrey, who like Guy was a senior selection.

Manning's been robbed of appropriate acknowledgement before. See, e.g., Heisman Trophy.

Those of us who are old enough remember that his father, Archie, should have been a Heisman Trophy winner as well. During the Civil Rights Movement era, some of the voters were known to have said that they would not vote for someone from Mississippi.

Archie was the most exciting quarterback that I have ever watched. If you haven't seen The Book of Manning, get it. It provides a hint of what he was like, both on and off the field.

If I remember correctly, Ray Guy was also a devastating last man on punt coverage and could lay a mean hit on a punt returner.

Maybe a month or two back there was an hour or maybe two hour long program about the Mannings. Archie was a real home movie addict and there was plenty of film of the kids growing up.

They also showed a lot of footage of Archie playing with Ole Miss and I had forgotten just how good he was. Maybe the best there ever was. He had the misfortune of playing for one of the worst pro teams ever.

I never got to see Guy play but did get to see Favre at Southern Miss. I believe he had the strongest arm ever.

I once saw him throw in the most awkward position possible and hit the tight end on the opposite side of the field. The ball was thrown so hard he couldn’t handle it.

I had a class with that tight end the next Monday and he told me, yes it was just thrown too hard.

A lot of these guys are in a lot worse shape when they become eligible so I don’t hold it against them about the minimum of four inducted per year. If are going to do a hall of fame for the sport of football let them enjoy it and get some gravy off of it while they can. That said, yes, there’s a reason it’s generally a bigger deal to get in Cooperstown. Or even not to get into it.

I’d have voted for Will Shields over Aeneas Williams. Williams deserves to go some year, but Shields made the Pro Bowl 12 times to 6 for Williams.

The pro bowl has been such a dog for so long it hasn’t been much of a way to burnish your credentials,IMO. In the old days, the check they got for playing meant something , it’s about nothing now to most of them.

Aeneas Williams was also very fan friendly, after practices he was never too busy or too tired to sign stuff for fans, same as Kurt Warner.

Claude Humphrey is the neglected man here.

Humphrey was a one man band on defense for the (at the time hapless) Atlanta Falcons. And it is really hard to be a one man band on defense.

I thought the guy was the best I ever seen because he was double teamed on almost every play and still made most of the stops on defense.

It is a shame no one got to see him play because Atlanta never was on tv.

I’m very glad for Ray Guy. I don’t know that there are many HOF-worthy punters/kickers, but he certainly is.

He also had to sell his Super Bowl rings at a bankruptcy auction a couple of years ago. Being in the HOF ought to get him invited to a few more revenue-generating events.

He was FAR more outstanding at his position than any of the others listed were at their positions..

In fact, he may have had a greater impact on his team’s success that any of the other player chosen this year.

Yes. I'm old enough to know when wide receivers not only couldn't wear gloves, but if a guy had stickum on his hands it was considered "cheating".

Belitnikoff was considered a "cheater" at the time.

Don't get me started on just WHY Snake Stabler is not in the HOF.

Some say it's because the Raiders of the time were considered "dirty" players.

Ergo, why only a few of them made the HOF.

IMHO, the 70s Raiders were awesome. And I'm not even a Raiders fan.

“Don’t get me started on just WHY Snake Stabler is not in the HOF.”

I think it is because that era has so many great qbs, Tark, Bradshaw, Staubach, Griese, A Maning, Jones, Hart ... not all HoFers, but close enough to Stabler to muddy the waters,
