McDonalds wants to be a bigger player in the global coffee business.
The worlds biggest hamburger chain on Thursday highlighted beverages as one of its key growth opportunities at a day-long presentation for investors.
The push comes as Starbucks Corp. is enjoying strong sales growth even in the choppy economy. In the latest quarter, the Seattle-based chain said global sales rose 7 percent at locations open at least a year. At McDonalds, the figure edged up 0.9 percent.

I always wondered why Starbucks and McDonalds didn’t figure a way to put a mini Starbucks kiosk in a McDonalds.
They can start by not mixing sugar and cream together. I can’t get a cream only ice coffee there.
I never ever understood the whole Starbucks thing
I DO remember Consumer Reports saying McDonalds coffee is just as good as Starbucks. Now if they could just sell wine like they do in France.
My experience with McDonald’s has been similar.
At home, I roast my own beans - mainly for espresso based beverages. I am little bit picky about coffee, especially espresso - but I am not so particular that I want drink an occasional cup of Folgers.
When gobbling up interstate miles, I like to have some caffeine and I prefer the taste of McDonald’s over Starbucks.
The problem with McDonald’s is that their useless employees almost invariably cannot resist the urge to add sweet vanilla syrup to an order for a “plain nonfat latte with no sugar, no sweetener, no syrup whatsoever”.
It’s happened too many times to count. I’ve even written McDonald’s HQ for fun to ask exactly how I should state the above order to get exactly what I want instead of a vanilla latte which I absolutely did not want. Starbucks doesn’t taste as good as McDonald’s, but the product is 100% predictable and accurate.
I always wondered why Starbucks and McDonalds didnt figure a way to put a mini Starbucks kiosk in a McDonalds.
Two reasons:
1. Why would McDonald’s share profits with a competitor
2. The most important, why would McDonald’s want to sell crappy coffee.
The money is in the Beverages.
I would bet that a McDonalds Coke costs less than the ice and cup it is in.
I like my Starbucks and can drink MCD coffee if I have to, but it certainly is not good coffee. Nothing there is really good.
I thought I was alone in my dislike for Starbucks. I always felt that it tasted burned. I like McDonalds coffee, once it finally cools down from the molten lava temperature. That being said, I usually brew my own Eight O’clock Coffee at home and enjoy the tremendous savings.
A medium Starbucks coffee costs about 2 dollars and a few pennies. Fancy lattes are expensive; coffee is about the same price as Dunkin Donuts. And with the Starbucks rewards program you can get free coffee every 12 purchases. Starbu cks is not as expensive as people make it out to be. Take it from someone who is really cheap.
McDonalds Breakfast is good. The Bacon Egg and Cheese Bagel is great. Terrible for you but great!
You can call Starbucks crappy but the facts simply do not support that as people want it and will pay more, including me. And I am a cheapskate.
Starbucks has 20,000 stores worldwide and they are usually crowded....that is no accident.
Actually the breakfast isn’t bad......I have eaten that before long hikes.
The “Egg White Delight” is quite good and highly recommended!
Naaah. Starbucks makes a good product; just expensive. I have my own espresso machine at home. I can make what Starbucks charges $4.00 to get; for 15 or 20 cents.
I don’t drink the cheap weak brewed coffee! Real men drink strong coffee!
Everybody is welcome to their own opinion, you and others like what Starbucks sells and that’s fine. My opinion is that it burnt and crappy, my opinion only carries weight with me. Drink what you like and enjoy it. I have been drinking the Gavina coffee McDonald’s sells since 1983 and it has always tasted better to me than Starbucks.
Also I’ll be damned if I will put a penny into the hands of Christian bashers who promote gay marriage. This is America and people can spend their money or not with whoever they want.
Co-branding! Sounds good.
I hate all drinks at McDonalds as they don’t sell any drink that does nt taste sweet except perhaps water. If you want unsweetened tea, it is sweetened with no calories.
But I hate sugar in coffee or tea.
