WASHINGTON — It’s long been known that America’s school kids haven’t measured well compared with international peers. Now, there’s a new twist: Adults don’t either.
In math, reading and problem-solving using technology – all skills considered critical for global competitiveness and economic strength – American adults scored below the international average on a global test, according to results released Tuesday.

Well, in the defense of Americans, most of those who voted for Obama are only partial (hyphenated) Americans. In most of their cases, they are only American when they want a handout.
I blame the poverty culture for much of that. Plenty of kids, especially minority, are taught *not* to seek success. They're filled with propaganda meant to keep them in the lower class. These defeatist ideas permeate the poverty culture from all sides, making escaping that culture and mindset extremely difficult.
The United States will have a tough time catching up because money at the state and local level, a major source of education funding, has been slashed in recent years, said Jacob Kirkegaard, an economist with the Peterson Institute for International Economics.
Education performance has little correlation to money spent. Schools do not need to have the latest in computers in most classes, nor do they need huge money wasting bureaucracies. In fact, in many basic skills classes, I would say that computers hinder education. For instance, how is a kid supposed to learn how to set up and solve math problems on a computer?

OK. I can agree with that. When the first person tried to hyphenate American, the rest of society should have put his butt on a boat back to wherever he came from. By definition, you can’t be an American AND something else because we are already FROM everywhere else.

He is a symptom of a problem that has been brewing for 45 years.
If a miracle took place tomorrow and schools went back to the techniques and discipline of 40 years ago, the damage that has been done will not be fixed for 40 years, and by then the rest of the world will have moved on. Yes, it’s that bad.

Yes, we are getting more and more illiterate. All you need to do is observe friends, family, neighbors and co-workers. My husband complained from the 80’s on about people in his office (all college grads) not being able to construct an English sentence on paper.
Nobody has bookcases in their homes. Nobody drops literary references in their daily conversation. No such thing as a “scholar” anymore. Good Heavens, preschools don’t even teach Mother Goose.
One more thing. If memory serves correctly, Thomas Dewey is credited with not just the Dewey Decimal System used in libraries but the foundation of the current educational system. I also seem to remember that he was a a Fabian socialist and Progressive. I also seem to remember he was a pacifist and a favorite of the Wilson administration. I am open to correction on these recollections. It has been years, no decades since I read about him and it may be two different Thomas Dewey. It seems to me that if we started with such a demonstrably flawed philosophy promoted by a man deeply motivated by that philosophy, we should not be surprised by it’s failure to nourish the Freedom and Liberty provided for by our Constitution since such notions are anathema to all other political philosophy.
17. Get control of the schools. Use them as transmission belts for socialism and current Communist propaganda. Soften the curriculum. Get control of teachers’ associations. Put the party line in textbooks.

Instead of spending resources on these tests they should have just examined the results of our last two presidential elections. Same conclusions!
The rest of the world only wised up after 2011. They loved Barry O’Bama in 2008.

Actually, I don’t need a study to tell me this. Just look at the last two presidential elections.
Toss in a government school system designed to indoctrinate, rather than educate. Plus the schools are designed around Push systems that benefit only the teachers and bureaucrats.
