‘People Think It’s Over’ Spared Death, Aging People With H.I.V. Struggle to Live
New York Times ^ | 06/01/13 | John Leland

Steve Schalchlin would be the first to tell you he lives in a time of miracles, and about how hard that can be. In 1995, as his body wasted away from AIDS, he took the limited time in front of him as a challenge: he would write songs, make amends, fill his remaining days with life. And by the end, with his digestive system shut down, his figure skeletal, he was ready to die. Then he won a lottery for a new AIDS drug that had been rushed through the approval process. Almost overnight his health began to return, and with it, another, more open-ended, challenge: life...

Suddenly the future seemed like this long, empty road going toward the horizon, and I felt like, what am I gonna do with my life now?” Mr. Schalchlin, 59, said the other day, still marveling at the turn of events. “I had already accomplished all my goals that I had set for myself. And now I had this endless amount of time ahead of me, and I felt depressed.”

Mr. Schalchlin no longer worries about dying of AIDS. But he has other health problems, more often seen in people 10 or 20 years older: kidney damage, diabetes, chronic fatigue, thyroid disease, partial paralysis in one eye and general weakness that limits him throughout the day.

I’ve long since dealt with it overall. But it still irks me. Got plenty of med issues of my own so I tend to stay up on med research/advances. What I’ll never get past is that normal people/illnesses get put by the wayside in favor of self inflicted idiocy as long as fame or a cause de’celebre can be exploited. THAT really gets me good.

But then such is our world.

If the obese and the smokers have to pay higher medical premiums under ObamaCare because of their “risky behavior,” surely homosexuals should as well.

Furthermore, if the nanny gummint can ban high-capacity sodas and tobacco, why can't they at least discourage homosexuality, if not ban it outright?

Oh, that's right. We're only a "collective" when it moves the agenda to the left.

I can find sympathy for *some* Americans with AIDS.Certain people overseas...in Africa, for example...are an entirely different matter to be discussed at another time. One class of Americans I can sympathize with are women who truly didn't know her husbands were "sleeping" with guys or that he was shooting drugs.I also have sympathy for those who contracted AIDS in the womb.OTOH,junkies, perverts or those who *knowingly* slept with junkie and perverts, hookers and customers of hookers...NO SYMPATHY!

Not a single bit.

My beloved brother-in-law also died of AIDS in 1992. He got it in the very early years. I’m so glad they’ve got the drugs now to extend lives, but it is also sad what those people still have to live with, especially the depression and loneliness. You may not approve of the lifestyles that resulted in the HIV but you have to have compassion as a fellow human being and thus fellow sinner. Remembering that we’re all in need of God’s grace pretty much levels everything out.

Years ago when I was a much more virile man I enjoyed fishing fast moving streams in my hip waders. I knew from being told and personal experience that deep fast moving water can be a real danger. There were times when I barley escaped from my foolishness. I still keep in my mind those fishing lessons as to many other happenings in one’s life. As such I view premeditated reckless and life threatening actions/choices in very much the same light. I can’t get caring emotional about people who by their own choice involve themselves in dangerous unhealthy activities.

Evens everything out?

Nope, it does not. We all need God’s mercy but engaging in utterly egregious behavior means such a person is rejecting His mercy. Everything is not all the same.

So did this Steve feller give up same sex sodomy or does he carry on with the “gay” life?

Rhetorical question, maybe the answer is in the (no doubt very lenghty) NYT article. I guess I could click the link.

Everyone who buys health insurance pays for the diseases homosexuals suffer from, not just AIDS, but many, many others. Many HIV positive homosexuals get free health insurance anyway, since they're special. Of course I'm sorry anyone suffers, but if people ask and beg and plead and demand that to have suffering, by engaging in the very acts that they know will bring suffering, my compassion is of a different sort. And my anger is at the homosexuals and their assistants who push the "gay is good" and "if you had one gay thought/experience it means you are born gay and can never change" message TO OUR CHILDREN!

If anyone wants on/off either ping list, freepmail me.

Why is it I don't wonder if anonymous bathroom sex isn't on his bucket list?

Read the whole thing. Lost a bunch of artsy friends to the disease in the 90s. Tried to feel bad about survivors with health problems. Uhhhnnnh! UHHNNNNHHH!

Just couldn’t.

I'm not going to bash anyone who contracts this disease who OWNS UP to the reason he contracts it. It's the in-your-face, unrepentant, blame-projecting activists I have absolute contempt for. I really hope the disease takes homos such as these quickly and painfully.

Sorry if that sounds harsh, but these people are proud murderers.

He has been given a temporary reprieve. I did not see anywhere in the article that he was going to use his time usefully to rebuild his relationship with his Creator. Too bad.

God is so merciful to anyone who humbles himself/herself, repents, and asks for forgiveness.
