The Doors' founding keyboardist, Ray Manzarek, died in Germany Monday after a long fight with cancer, his publicist said in a statement. He was 74.

The artist had been diagnosed with bile duct cancer.

The Doors formed in 1965 after Manzarek happened to meet Jim Morrison on California's Venice Beach. The legendary rock group went on to sell 100 million albums worldwide, establishing five multiplatinum discs in the U.S

Morrison died in 1971, but Manzarek carried on The Doors' legacy, continuing to work as a musician and an author.

Great keyboard solos, especially on “Light my Fire”.

Why do you find in necessary to crap on a thread. IF you are not interested then don’t go to the thread.

I don’t care too much about whether this guy is dead but there will be people on here that like the Doors.

I don’t know how, but it must be Bush’s fault.

I thought he was great. He seemed to be the most level headed of the group.

Ray saved the LA Woman album with his keyboard playing, because by then, Jim’s voice was just about gone.

I care.

The Doors were an important American cultural contribution, and Manzarek not only wrote the music, it was his self-effacing dedication to the music, rather than ego, that enabled him to contain the selfish monster known as Jim Morrison and direct that man's considerable creative energies constructively for the better part of a decade.

Thank you, Ray Manzarek.

Many people....in varying degrees.

You cared just enough to post a shit heel comment which makes you essentially the bottom of the barrel.

As if I needed more help feeling old.

That said, RIP Ray. The Doors were part of the soundtrack of my life in my junior and senior high school years.

who cares?

I'm guessing that the number of FReepers that care that a legendary keyboardist for an iconic rock band has passed away will exceed the number of FReepers that care or even notice when somebody named mbarker12474 (or somebody named VRWCmember for that matter) eventually passes away. But I would never be so callous or cavalier about anybody's life as to say "who cares" about the news of their passing. As a friendly suggestion to avoid well deserved derision, I would strongly recommend that you ping a moderator by hitting the abuse button on your own post and ask him to remove your ill-advised comment.

Great keyboard solos, especially on “Light my Fire”.

Manzarek was inspired by John Coltrane's version of My Favorite Things for Light My Fire.
