The teenage daughter of a woman who secretly left her family 11 years ago says she's angry and doesn't want to have a relationship with her.
Morgan Heist said Thursday that she's still trying to sort out why Brenda Heist would have decided to abandon her and her brother in Pennsylvania in 2002 and hitchhike with strangers to Florida.
Morgan Heist is now a 19-year-old freshman at a community college outside Philadelphia. She says she thinks about how she's spent the last decade mourning a woman who was alive.
Heist’s ex-husband meanwhile has said he is angry but working on forgiveness. He was once considered a suspect in her disappearance.
'There were families who would not let our children play with theirs because of me,' says Lee Heist Senior.
Brenda Heist was reported missing by her husband on February 8, 2002. The then 42-year-old was last been seen that morning dropping off her two children at school in Lititz, Pennsylvania. Her car was found a few days later with no apparent sign of a struggle.
Then on Friday evening she walked into Monroe County Sheriff’s Office in Key Largo, Florida and announced who she was.
After arriving in the Sunshine State, she had lived as a homeless person in the Key West area, sleeping under bridges and tents and eating food thrown out by fast food restaurants, police said.
In all the years she was missing she never used a bank card or ID, even when she made some money cleaning boats.

I don’t know but it may be that the mother disappearing was for the best even with what the family went through.

The daughter needs to get over it. She mourned the mother she had, found a way to make peace with the loss and went on with her life. That’s all any of us can do. This woman turning up is not the mother she lost, that woman no longer exists. This frail, unbalanced and perhaps drug addicted shell does need help, clearly.
Maybe the daughter can find it in her heart to forgive her, and help her get it rather than hurling curses at her. It takes more strength and courage to do the right thing. I pray she finds it.
Of course she has abandonment issues.

Exactly. Clearly the mother is not in her right mind. I think she was born that way. See my earlier posts about fetal alcohol syndrome.
Her children are the one avenue to help this woman.
They just have to not take it personal and understand that their mother probably didn’t even consider what she was doing to them, and her husband.
She is a mental basket case. No malice, just a basket case.
BTW, her ex isn’t off the hook. Life insurance paid out. Make NO mistake, they will come looking for reimbursement.
Hope the guy can pay off.
Lititz is about 45 minutes from me. I hadn’t heard about this until now.
Maybe it’s bleached out from being sun all the time?
I lived in Lititz, PA when Heist ‘’disappeared’’. The community, largely, believed that her husband had something to do with her ‘’disappearance’’. As did the police.
Heist, the husband, went through Hell, being the main ‘’suspect’’. That she would turn up today is a shock to many in this area.
Meth much? What a skank. In all senses of the word.
The phone will be ringing at hubby’s house. Another reason to wish she stayed disappeared.

I suspect so and having known and dealt with the schizophrenic brother of a best friend, I have a good idea of what you are going thru.

The insurance company that paid off WILL want reimbursed.
His trials and tribulations are far from over.
One look at her face, one knows she suffers from fetal alcohol syndrome.
She needs help and understanding. Especially from her kids who right now, hate her so much.

No meth here. You don’t know meth or mental illness.
Meth heads don’t have a clear face.
Fetal alcohol syndrome does.
This woman is classic FAS. Classic. One look at her face and any clinician will reach that conclusion.
And that means brain damage on a large scale.
This woman was doomed in the womb. Her momma just COULDN’T stop drinking the hooch when preggers.
Its sad, and its easy to blame mom, but in this case, mom probably isn’t the culprit.
Her eyes tell the tale.
If she has FAS, all the understanding in the world will not help her. Her wiring is broken, and it cannot be repaired.
Our current OCCUPANT of the White House sure does.
