The teenage daughter of a woman who secretly left her family 11 years ago says she's angry and doesn't want to have a relationship with her.
Morgan Heist said Thursday that she's still trying to sort out why Brenda Heist would have decided to abandon her and her brother in Pennsylvania in 2002 and hitchhike with strangers to Florida.
Morgan Heist is now a 19-year-old freshman at a community college outside Philadelphia. She says she thinks about how she's spent the last decade mourning a woman who was alive.
Heist’s ex-husband meanwhile has said he is angry but working on forgiveness. He was once considered a suspect in her disappearance.
'There were families who would not let our children play with theirs because of me,' says Lee Heist Senior.
Brenda Heist was reported missing by her husband on February 8, 2002. The then 42-year-old was last been seen that morning dropping off her two children at school in Lititz, Pennsylvania. Her car was found a few days later with no apparent sign of a struggle.
Then on Friday evening she walked into Monroe County Sheriff’s Office in Key Largo, Florida and announced who she was.
After arriving in the Sunshine State, she had lived as a homeless person in the Key West area, sleeping under bridges and tents and eating food thrown out by fast food restaurants, police said.
In all the years she was missing she never used a bank card or ID, even when she made some money cleaning boats.

I wonder that too. There have been other cases like this too. The woman just wondered off and it was due to some mental illness. Judging by the way she lived she was not quite right in the head.
Heist, the husband, went through Hell, being the main ‘’suspect’’. That she would turn up today is a shock to many in this area.
I work a few miles to the west of Lititz but only moved to PA a few years ago so I didn’t know anything about her disappearance when it happened. I can’t imagine what this family is going through or what they went through when she disappeared especially when the husband was suspected in her disappearance. It’s really no wonder why her daughter is angry.
What she did to her family makes no sense. The divorce was supposedly amicable, she had a job and a place to live even though another article says she had been turned down for “housing assistance”, whatever that means, it wasn’t as if she was homeless or on the verge of becoming homeless. So after dropping her children off at school, she abandoned her car, her job, her family and took up with a group of strangers, homeless people hitchhiking to FL to live all these years as a homeless person because she was “stressed” over the divorce and was “struggling” financially. Yea, that life must have so much more comfortable and less stressful /s. Even if she is mentally ill, which she must be to some extent, or was drug or alcohol addicted before she walked off, what an incredibly selfish thing to do.
Not only what the family went through but also all the resources, money and time spent by the Lititz and PA State Police, even I presume the FBI looking for her when she went missing and it was presumed she had been abducted or murdered. Then there is the question of what happens to the life insurance that was paid to her husband after she was declared dead and what happens to his new marriage.
Every town, even small quaint towns like Lititz has some sort of seamy underside, but Lititz most likely less than most. I love going to Lititz and shopping on their quaint main street, went last year to the craft festival in the park. I don’t know what your experience was when you lived there, but it seems a very nice place to live, rather upscale.

I really doubt that any reputable clinician would reach such a conclusion in that manner. Unlike an internet clinician, a RL doctor isn’t going to make a diagnosis based solely on a photo. And FWIW, the links you posted with pictures of people with FAS, I wouldn’t say that this woman looks like she has FAS.
And that means brain damage on a large scale.
And yet she held a job as a bookkeeper for an automotive dealership, she was able to drive a car, was married and had two children. That doesn’t sound like someone with “brain damage on a large scale”. That doesn’t rule out mental illness however; my bet is on bi-polar of some type or other personality disorder, a sociopath, but note that I’m not making a clinical diagnosis, just my guess based on the similar types of behaviors of a relative of mine who is bi-polar and a sociopath; highly functioning and very bright, but a selfish and highly manipulative person and a compulsive liar. She has over the years lied about having cancer, lied about her husband abusing her, lied about being raped, and has lied about so many things, has done so many horrible things to members of our family that we’ve cut all ties with her. I see a lot of similarities between Brenda Heist and my relative. But again, that's not a diagnosis, just my observation.

She wasn’t so “highly brain damaged” that she was unable engage in identity theft and manipulating people into believing her “stories”.
This woman was doomed in the womb. Her momma just COULDN’T stop drinking the hooch when preggers.
Its sad, and its easy to blame mom, but in this case, mom probably isn’t the culprit.
So you are quick to not blame Brenda Heist for her actions and what we know she did, but yet you are quick to blame it all on her mother, disparaging her and labeling her as a raging alcoholic based on nothing, no evidence what so ever.
The anger of the daughter is understandable, but she’d be better off cooling her jets in case there is a legitimate reason to explain her mom’s bizarre behavior. From mental illness issues (which are heritable) to cruel twists of fate there are a number of things that could shed light on the situation. I know of one woman for example who was electrocuted and did a Jekyll/Hyde due to the logical if not very well known fact that having one’s circuits fried can cause a personality change. The daughter will hate herself later if something like that later comes to light, and frankly, she’s been through enough already.

Everyone has pressure. Day to day life in these times is pressure. You don’t leave your children over it.
Maybe I’m getting short on compassion as I get older, I don’t know...I just can’t see ANY valid reason for walking out on your kids, and leaving them to think that you’re dead, and their Dad had something to do with it.
That’s just cruel, selfish, and small-minded. That’s about as charitable as I can be.
I’ll telling you, Courtney Love is perfect.
Bring her in for the “homeless and post-homeless” scenes, film them first. Then take her to makeup for the “pre” scenes.
