Our last race at Horn Rapids was about 5 years ago.

Cool boat, but pretty useless for anything else, and can only be used on very flat water.

Alas, I live on the ocean and could not afford the gas for an open ocean racer like in Miami Vice. The cost of the boat is an issue as well. Kayaks will have to do, but the acceleration sucks.

I watched these at least 10 years ago in Podunk (Marsing) Idaho. I’ve since moved away. I forgot just how much fun they were!

can't figure out how the course is laid out

The course has many channels and options. At the races in Marsing, Idaho, several years back, they had different classes, and each class would race its own course. The passenger in the boat memorizes the map of their particular course for the day, and routes the driver through the channels using hand signals. A missed turn is a DQ. It's a hoot!

looks like it, but the driver can't remember the course and drive? i'd like to see what solo boats could do...

Certainly not an ocean-going vessel, but the boats were run on an exhibition course on the Columbia River and on just about any lake in the area recreationally (such as Moses Lake). The high state of tune of the motors in the faster classes was actually more of an impediment to non-race use than the hull design.
