That’s not having it both ways, that’s the ENTIRE point of doing a reboot. You keep the basic concepts of the universe plus the fun icons and you get to ditch the thousands of hours of confused canon.

Never believe the reviews of fanboys, they’re skewed. I mean really, he considers Trek 2 one of the best movies in the history of SF, I like Trek 2 but it ain’t even top 50.

A lot of the history or the Mirror Universe has been fleshed out in those episodes. And really it’s a pirate universe, that gets boring fast, hard to find room for external plots when it’s important to have your main cast trying to kill each other every movie.

Reboots are about having it both ways, that is why you do them. Keep the concept ditch the canon. New stories within the broader universe still have to drag around the canon, if you do a Gorns vs Tholians movie somebody points out how the two could never have met due to some single sentence somewhere. That’s the canon problem, it chokes stories to death.

The writers took the smart route the “no we aren’t watching 28 years of TV and 10 movies most of which actually suck just to write one damn movie” route. Reboots happen all the time, every 3rd freaking James Bond movie is a reboot, Trek fans just need to suck it up. Because really, their whining about the sanctity of a canon that never really even existed is WHY a reboot HAD to be done and should have been done 2 or 3 times by now.

Re: Folks, don't click the link if you don't want to read this. Really.

He's Khan... Jim.

Now that I've done my part in this thread, to hell with 'clicking!' I've got two better things... to do!

Son-of-a-bitch! I 'clicked' and found out they left my pecks... on the cutting room floor!

I 'clicked' but I... know nothing!

Don't that beat all? I 'clicked' and found out I got shot again... and I did it!

I 'clicked' and found out it was all a dream but my... boobs are real!

I 'clicked' but as you know, I always... clicked in that special way--

I 'clicked' and found out I won't be in the new Star Wars reboot... either!

I 'clicked' and found out I am still... dating a pig--

Ward, I 'clicked' and found out you have been too hard... on the Beaver.

I 'clicked' and found out you've lost... another submarine, Andrei!

I'll 'click' again, Mr Bond, but I still... expect you to die!

You can 'click' all you want, kid, but as long as I'm around... you're only second best..

A 'clicking' is an ungly thing... undt, I tink, that it is chust about time ve had vun.

I 'clicked' and 'clicked' again but it still... smells like a sewer down here!

Not only did I 'click,' but I am here... to serve you.

Gadsooks! I 'clicked' and found out "Futurama" has been cancelled... AGAIN!

Would you all stop that 'clicking' and shut... that damn door?

Well, with 'Futurama' cancelled again, thank Heavens I've still got a steady gig... here at Free Republic--

My God, I 'clicked' and it's a recipe for disaster! The only thing missing is... someone shouting "Heathcliff!" across the moors!

You win, it is the most brilliant concept since Ishtar. At least this will not have two Darrins in it.

Why can’t Trek people have calm discussions about Trek? Really, it’s sad. There’s a lot of potentially interesting conversation about what JJ has done, both good and bad. But you guys just can’t ever seem to get past “it sucks”. Shouldn’t have emotions tied to something you didn’t do, it’s just a show... OK a bunch of shows, but still just TV, a lot of which stinks.

Um, you are far more worked up about it than I am. It seems like a slickly packaged yawn.

Being a huge ST fan I love the new movies. I believe that these films are just an alternate history story arc and I would'nt be surprised if the third film in this series there is a serious effort to reset the time line by making sure the super nova that debtors Romulus never happens so Nero and Spock Prime wont go back time.
that being said, these films are just entertainment and in my opinion way above what passes for movie making these days, and who wouldn't go see a three way fight between the enterprise, the galactica and a star destroyer...I'd be first in line!
