Story is about a video released by authorities, but no picture of the perp in the story. Hmmm.

Ok, couple of questions here as I am unable to get v the article to come up on my phone: what type of special needs? Are we talking downs syndrome or are we talking ADHD or behavioral issues? And if the kid is violent, to the point of assaulting the driver, why doesn’t the kid have a para~professional with her?

“Police say Wilkerson was driving the special-needs children to school in Tampa on Sept. 28 when the 8-year-old wanted to get off the bus. She was told to wait her turn, but police say she slapped and pushed the driver.”

These are the people we have as public employees?

I have no idea about the particulars of this story, but "special needs" seems to be the new media throw away line for anything from a kid that occasionally misbehaves to a mentally disabled quadriplegic, and everything in between those two extremes. So essentially, "special needs" tells you absolutely nothing.

Violent “special needs” students, need to learn that attacking people is a bad idea. If they can not learn that as children, they will end up with a terrifying life.

I am not sure how you teach a special needs child to not respond violently when that is their habit, but if you can not teach the kid, he/she needs to be removed from mainstreaming programs and educated in a place that can effectively deal with the child.

In public school situations though, you have some idiots dealing with children disrespectfully and aggressively. They could and do manipulate and provoke any child they target to act unsightly and they lie about targeted children in an effort to ruin them, too.

This video only shows the driver kicking the child down and does not show what occured between the bus driver and the child prior to that inappropriate action. So the reader has no real idea of what was going on in this incident.

ANOTHER REASON TO HOMESCHOOL

This ping list is for the “other” articles of interest to homeschoolers about education and public school. This can occasionally be a fairly high volume list. Articles pinged to the Another Reason to Homeschool List will be given the keyword of ARTH. (If I remember. If I forget, please feel free to add it yourself)

The main Homeschool Ping List handles the homeschool-specific articles. I hold both the Homeschool Ping List and the Another Reason to Homeschool Ping list. Please freepmail me to let me know if you would like to be added to or removed from either list, or both.

Did you watch the video?

The bus driver pushed her off the steps from behind, with a kick in the butt.

There’s nothing that would indicate violent on the part of the child while she was standing on the steps.

Absolutely inexcusable on the part of the human reject that kicked her like that.

I had difficulty determining the direction the child was facing. It looked like she was kicked from behind.

Nothing that would justify kicking a child off of the steps of a school bus, IMO.

Just what can an 8 year old do to a well padded adult?

Quite a bit of damage, actually. Depends on what level of violence the kid was doing - if there was any violence at all. The tape does not show the interaction prior to the bus driver going animal.

I said the bus driver’s action was inappropriate. And, if the kid has problems with violence, the kid should not be mainstreamed in a public school. No public school staff nor students should have to deal with violent wackos hiding under victim labels nor should they have to deal with dysfuctional adults who are violent with students.

“””Violent “special needs” students, need to learn that attacking people is a bad idea.””””

I agree. In a related story, I was at a bike rally once when my wife was approached by a drunk guy who hugged her.

Now this was a biker function, a biker bar, some pretty rough individuals, needless to say.

I confronted the drunk who grabbed my wife and said; “Look here... I know you’re drunk so Imma let this slide. But a word of advice: This is not the type place you want to be grabbing strange women. If the woman don’t cut you, her ‘ole man’ will.”

He said “oh, I’m sorry... I didn’t know she your wife... yadda yadda...”

I said “no don’t worry about me, but you are going to grab the wrong woman and find yourself dumped in a ditch. Just be glad it was my wife and not one of those Hells Angels over there.”

Moral is... you’re right. Its a bad idea to attack people. 9 out of 10 will look the other way but that tenth one don’t care how ‘special’ you are.

You’re right. Not justified. But the kid needs to learn that he cannot do that because some people don’t care if its justified or not. Even after everyone argues whether it was justified or not, it will not change the fact that the kid still has a busted face.

What? Should we let a kid get a beatdown and THEN say well that was wrong?

Like I said earlier, he is going to be violent to 9 people, then that tenth person is going to hurt him.

I worked with a girl who had downs syndrome. She would grab the breasts of other women and then giggle. She tried to do it to me. I took her arm, not hard, but firm, and said “no you will not do that, it is not appropriate. No one else ever did that to her. She not once after that ever grabbed anyone in front of me again.
She ended up getting decked by doing it to the wrong person. She was trained that she could do whatever she wanted. I did my best, but I wasn’t with her 24/7. That said though, she doesn’t do it to anyone anymore.
