(de)Evolution of a math lesson 1950-2013 (vanity)

Posted on 03/16/2013 12:00:17 PM PDT by Impala64ssa

Years of Math 1950 – 2013

Last week I purchased a burger at Burger King for $1.58. The counter girl took my $ 2 and I was digging for my change when I pulled 8 cents from my pocket and gave it to her. She stood there, holding the nickel and 3 pennies, while looking at the screen on her register. I sensed her discomfort and tried to tell her to just give me two quarters , but she hailed the manager for help. While he tried to explain the transaction to her, she stood there and cried. Why do I tell you this?Because of the evolution in teaching math since the 1950s

Teaching Math In 1950s A logger sells a truckload of lumber for $100. His cost of production is 4/5 of the price. What is his profit?

Teaching Math In 1960s A logger sells a truckload of lumber for $100. His cost of production is 4/5 of the price, or $80. What is his profit?

Teaching Math In 1970s A logger sells a truckload of lumber for $100. His cost of production is $80. Did he make a profit?

Teaching Math In 1980s A logger sells a truckload of lumber for $100. His cost of production is $80 and his profit is $20. Your assignment: Underline the number 20.

Teaching Math In 1990s A logger cuts down a beautiful forest because he is selfish and inconsiderate and cares nothing for the habitat of animals or the preservation of our woodlands. He does this so he can make a profit of $20.. What do you think of this way of making a living? Topic for class participation after answering the question: How did the birds and squirrels feel as the logger cut down their homes? (There are no wrong answers, and if you feel like crying, it's ok.)

Teaching Math In 2009 Un hachero vende una carretada de maderapara $100. El costo de la producciones es $80. Cuanto dinero ha hecho?

Teaching Math In 2013 Who cares, just steal the lumber from your rich neighbor's property. He won't have a gun to stop you, and the President says it's OK anyway cuz it’s redistributing the wealth.

Beck was talking about the “Common Core” curriculum. I’d never heard of it before.

Sounds just dreadful and it’s taking over all over the country.

Are there any actual examples of math problems in the period cited? When making the point to someone, it might be more useful to have some real math problems, and not have to use a clever, but exaggerated, viral email to make the point.

There should be a few more in there:

In 2000: A female lesbian logger and her life partner start a lumber company with a grant from the US government. Because of evil Republicans they can’t get married because of DOMA and Christian homophobes. Question: Do you think you might be a lesbian, and if so, would you like to talk to the volleyball coach about it?

The real ones are not far off the mark. When you see stuff saying homosexuality has to be put into math problems, and race has to be put into math problems, you’re there.

The “public school”, including the “charter school”, is BY FAR, the largest, most expensive, most subversive, and most destructive entitlement program in the country.

The “public school” is better understood as the “government school collective”.

It is silly to imagine that you can fix the public schools, because the very concept itself is collectivist.

Any child that comes out of the government school collective with their moral compass and common sense intact does so in spite of the government school indoctrination, not because of it.

It is hypocritical for you to submit your children to an authority with whom you fundamentally disagree. Children instinctively mistrust hypocrites.

If you want to win the culture war, have lots of children (see my tagline) and homeschool them or form your own school cooperative with your church or synagogue and like-minded friends and relatives.

Nobody loves our children more than you do.

Nobody can teach your children better than you can.

Nobody knows your children better than you do.

Your children would love nothing better than to be taught by you, if you start doing so before they are corrupted by the government school collective.

If you have children, make whatever sacrifices you must to get them out of the public schools.

DO NOT FEED THE BEAST!

Especially not with your own children.

And DO NOT TAKE GOVERNMENT “EDUCATION” MONEY!

He that pays the piper calls the tune, and that’s especially true for any government entitlement program.

You have a point but ...

Take a look at any old 50's and earlier math book. Algebra, for example. I have a couple from the 40's. They are relatively short books but you could easily master algebra by following the course outline.

The format: Description of the basic principles, example problems worked out and then problems for the student.

Now take a look at the 5 lb monsters that the kids need a backpack to carry that are now used to teach ecology/algebra. Lots of hand-holding. Political Correctness brought to a fine art but just total overkill when it come to the math. Confusing and, in the end, inadequate.

The 50's were better.

We can’t ask our children to anything too mentally challenging, now, can we? Just think, if they learned to think for themselves and to figure things out, they just might figure out that the government is one big fraud.

It’s not school anymore, it’s just state run babysitting along with loads of indoctrination through propaganda.

Only anti-values are (”taught”) foisted on innocent children.

It's simple.

Back in the day, stupid people would naturally remove themselves from the gene pool. Being stupid HURT and was a likely death sentence.

Now we bubble-wrapped the world and put warnings on everything. We limit everyone’s freedom to prevent stupid people from hurting themselves. We feed and control diets of people too stupid to feed themselves. We feed the children of idiots, nomatter how many they breed.

Under such conditions, the amount of idiots will naturally increase exponentially every year until there aren't enough competent people to take care of them.

Compassionate, yes. But it's no different than being compassionate to a group of feral dogs in your home and letting them breed. Eventually they'll take over your home and everyone dies...horribly.

In 2013, all lumber production is now in China and US loggers are out of work. Doesn’t matter because the cost of load of lumber went from $100 to $10,000 in 60 short years and no one can afford it.
