LA Agrees To Pay $40K To Women Mistakenly Shot At During Dorner Hunt

LOS ANGELES (AP) — The city has agreed to give $40,000 to two women whose pickup was shot up by LAPD protection detail that mistook their vehicle for the truck driven by rogue ex-cop Christopher Dorner during his rampage, officials announced Thursday.

The tax-free settlement covering the pickup and other property came quickly after the women’s attorney, Glen Jonas, rejected Chief Charlie Beck’s offer of a replacement truck because the women would have had to pay taxes. The deal specified no admission of liability.

That’s a cheap gratuity for negligently shooting to kill.

“I’m no fan of greedy plaintiffs, but $40,000 seems awfully light!”

Especially since it was no accident. That was officers thinking that they could be executioners.

I think they wasted that much money in missed shots. Screwballs have been watching too many James Bond movies where everybody but the hero is a horrible shot.

Plus they will create Assistant Chief position for the brave officers that did the shooting. $ 40,000.00 is an insult to the two women. The officers that were shooting at them did everything in their power to take their lives away from them. In a just world, the cops would be facing attempted murder charges, instead they will be promoted to Assistant Chiefs or Special assistant to the Mayor.

The report I heard on KFI sounded good.

The police chief Charlie Beck promised a new truck.

If the city or a third party had given them a truck it would be taxable gift. (No taxes with this plan.)

The city of LA can settle law suits less than $50,000 with just a few signatures and doesn’t need a city city council hearing. (Fast)

To keep the settlement under $50,000 the lawyer waived his fees. He knows he will get paid in full when they get their personal injury settlement.

The only agreed to litigation involving property damages. Personal injury is not covered and will be settled latter.

I found a link at KFI radio but it wasn’t working when I tried it. Too much traffic maybe.

Other details that caused problems. The truck was not paid for and they still owe on it. The police still have the truck as part of the internal investigation into the shooting. I forget how their insurance played in to thed picture.

They shot it up because they could do it and get away with it. Just like the Nevada cops shot down the guy at Cosco like he was a dog.

Pikers.

The shootees should be getting the pensions of 4 or 5 officers.

Not a suitable settlement. Not even close. The sum of money was not nearly enough for emotional duress and property loss.

Also need convictions against the officers who fired the shots for reckless endangerment and loss of their jobs. Until both matters are rectified, the case remains open in my mind.

Also, the DOJ should be launching an investigation of the LAPD AND Sgt. Teri Evans in regard to this case.

If these women dont’ have a lawyer they need to get one NOW.

40K? That’s BS, they both could have been killed.

That behavior on the part of the cops was pretty much depraved indifference and they need to write a MUCH BIGGER check.

And I say that as a true blue conservative law firm bookkeeper. And American. And somebody the cops better not ever open fire on like that, because 40K? I’m not laughing but....that’s a joke.

“I’m not sure I understand just WHY the officers opened fire on [that] truck...”

Nobody really does. And that they couldn’t tell two women from one (rather large) man is also disturbing.

Look, I can never see the details of other drivers because I guess I’m about 1/3 blind, but hubby can. I mean I can’t tell if a person driving some other vehicle is male or female, old or young, what race they are, Tall and Short, that’s as much as I can perceive.

But, hubby can tell and I’d like to think the cops can too, at least before they open fire.

I have to say I used to be a very law-and-order conservative. But it’s the news I’ve read on FR that’s made me much more skeptical about cops in general.

And this was just an outrage. I feel like that could have been me in that car. I’m a middle aged woman, I might be out there on my paper route, I’m not Hispanic, but HELLO I’m not a 6”5” black guy either, so please don’t shoot at me regardless of my vehicle!

I'm not sure I understand just WHY the officers opened fire on a truck that: Wasn't the color of the perp's truck, wasn't the same make/model, had 2 people in it,

Not to mention neither of them was a large, black male. As far as I know the truck wasn't pulled over they cops just started shooting.

Screwballs have been watching too many James Bond movies where everybody but the hero is a horrible shot.

You're missing an important component here. In the movies if the range is close, between cars, for instance, that are only a few feet apart, or across a room with the shooters hiding behind furniture, no one, not even the hero, can hit anything except in the last several seconds of the fire fight, the bad guys are spraying lead out of full auto firearms shooting up the cars or rooms(which ever applies)and the good guys are armed with semi-auto handguns and missing most of their shots, finally the hero shoots a perp, one shot from his handgun while the perps and other cops couldn't hit an elephant.

However, if they are outside and the bad guy is getting away and probably 100 yards down the street the hero can then hit him right between the eyes with a hastily aimed shot from his trusty 9MM.

The idea on the close scenes is to make a firefight last a long time to add excitement to the movie, never mind reality, who needs that? While on the long shot if the hero didn't hit him the perp would escape making the hero look stupid.

“Pulled over”? Oh my that never came close to happening. It was spray and pray from a distance."

I didn't know that.

Even with a dangerous fugitive I just assumed that they made the truck pull over.

If true, these cops are out of control sickos.

These women should OWN the LAPD.

A new truck doesn't come close to "atoning" for this debacle.

Oh, we almost killed you for no reason? Here's a new truck, for FREE!

No, no reason to thank us, just enjoy your NEW TRUCK!.

Are we cool, now?

The situation was that the cops were guarding one of Dorner’s manifesto targets, and obviously insanely jumpy, and the women were delivering newspapers in the neighborhood in morning darkness from the truck (driving slowly and pulling over to throw the papers out, turning off lights when they turned so as not to wake people in their houses) One cop fired, and once that happened, there was a “shots fired!” frenzy where everyone else piled in.
