Chicken wing shortage threatens Super Bowl Sunday
New York Post via Fox News ^ | January 24, 2013

First it was bacon, now it's chicken wings. With less than two weeks to go before the big game, football fans may find it a bit harder to find their favorite Super Bowl snack.

The National Chicken Council released a report that said the demand for wings this year is at “an all-time high” due to decreased wing production caused by the high cost of corn and feed prices. Wings are currently the highest priced portion of a chicken and cost $2.11 a pound in the Northeast, up 12 percent from last year.

Due to a decrease in wing production?!? What, they are only raising one winged chickens this year?

Buying chicken wings is too expensive. Before you cook a whole chicken, cut off the wings and add them to a freezer baggie. Eventually, you’ll have enough for hot wings. Wings saved from 77 cents a pound whole chickens sure beats the article’s $2.11. Do the same with the gizzards and livers to use for a meal later.

Buffalo wings come from the newborn baby buffaloes. They shed them after 3 days. Anyway that’s what I’ve been told. . .

Here in the Houston area there is a shortage due to a chicken distributor called Buddy’s going out of business. I found out about this because I feed my dog raw meat and bones, mainly chicken necks and backs. Our bones supplier is unable to get chicken backs and necks at this time until someone else picks up the slack caused by Buddy’s closing.

A farmer, his wife, and son all liked the drumstick so they bred some 3 legged chickens. The farmer was explaining this to his neighbor who asked how they taste; I don’t know, we haven’t been able to catch one yet.”

Just last night I made some wings for my wife and I for dinner. Wings are something my wife and I like to have when we can't think of anything else - it's the old standby.

I usually cook around 10 for me, and 6 for my wife. We always by the large tyson bag. We used to get 2 to 3 dinners out of a bag, last night there was a total of 20 wings in the bag! I commented to my wife about it, and she said it was the same price as always, they just cut WAY back on the amount in the bag.

The I saw this article. Looks like we got Al Gore to blame!

Also, freeze the skin for cracklings later.

Boil the carcass for stock instead of having to buy it.

Waste not, want not.

Back in the 1960’s my Grandpa was looking at buying a small chicken farm in Georgia. Recently I was told that Georgia produces nearly 7 billion chickens a year.

Lotta wings!

In my area, boneless breast is priced from $1.59-1.99/lb, bone in is $.99-1.29/lb. We’re eating a lot of chicken. Too bad I prefer beef.

The big plastic bucket that used to hold 1.5 gallons of cheap ice cream is now 1 gallon and 1 pint. I noticed a while back the 3 lb. margarine and sour cream tubs are smaller, too. Last week on the evening news they were reporting to be prepared that grocery prices were going to rise to a shocking 2% in 2013. Ha, they have been rising much more than that week to week.

If the wings aren’t Halal the Detroitistanis will riot!

We watched a new Gordon Ramsay show last night. He goes into a British prison and tries to teach some inmates to learn to cook.

Anyway he asks the head of the kitchen if he can borrow the kitchen and have his students cook Chili for the evening meal.
The supervisor informs him the prison is required to provide a choice of 5, FIVE choices.
The kitchen actually takes dinner orders from the inmates! The inmates get their food and eat in their cells. (good idea)

The real kicker was the choices.
regular chili
HALAL chili
vegetarian
VEGAN
don't remember the 5th

By the end of the first show it was apparent the inmates have it much easier on the inside. And Ramsay said so too.
