Officials from Tesoro Corp. have scheduled a meeting with employees today to announce that the company will shut down its refinery in Campbell Industial Park, according to several sources familiar with the situation.

Tesoro put the underperforming refinery up for sale in January 2012, but has not been able to find a buyer, the sources said. Tesoro met with state officials Monday to brief them of their decision, the sources said.

Underperforming?

Can't make a profit with the price of gasoline what it is in HI? Something stinks.

Does anyone import finished gasoline or diesel into Hawaii ?

Maybe they’re finding competition from cheaper sources, like Japan, S. Korea, etc ?

No market in HI for the heavier fractions and the total consumption in the state is not enough to make up for all regulations and tariffs.

Guaranteed that this will keep the tourists away.

These extremely ugly windmills are giving the name “America the Beautiful” a new meaning.

Anytime that government is pushing a new technology on the American people only means that a group of congresscritters is making lots and lots of money.

Ouch!

Guess I’ll have to wait a few weeks before I find those prices here in TX.

Guaranteed that they will stimulate the Obama economy in his second term.

Oil companies do not make as much as you would think. Their profits are less than those in many other industries, including tech businesses such as Apple. When you account for the cost of finding the oil, the cost of the regulations and taxes in involved, the cost of refining and making all the different blends required by the various whacko environmental rules, and then add in the obscene state and federal taxes on a gallon of gas, you will see that the real profiteers are the greedy jerks in government.

i think at best oil companies make $.05 per gallon and they do all the exploring drilling and refining. government makes over $.30 per gallon and they do NOTHING except make it more difficult fot oil companies.

THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT screwing up everything it touches for the past 50 years.

Wasn’t it Tesoro that shut down the St. Croix refinery, too.

We toured a winery on Maui a few months ago, & our tour leader just gushed how the entire island was all set to get 50% of their energy from wind power in the very near future! I managed not to laugh or say something rude.

Guess I didn't think it through. They would have to import the crude they refine (there is no oil there) and export by-products and any excess gasoline. Cheaper to import the gas rather than refine it, I suppose.

IIRC there are two refineries in Hawaii, basically right next to each other over by Barbers Point Oahu.

Guess the remaining one will have less competition. That’ll help lower prices. /s
