KOOTENAI COUNTY, Idaho -- Two people were hurt after trying to start a fire using exploding target material Friday afternoon.

The Kootenai County Sheriff’s Office said the men had spent the day in an area commonly referred to as the Hayden Creek shooting pit, when they decided to start a fire using some of their leftover exploding material as an accelerant.

When one of them came close to the fire with the materials in a bag, the materials exploded, severally injuring the man’s hand. Another man suffered lower body injuries.

Deputies said the men drove themselves to a convenience store parking lot in Hayden, where emergency crews met up with them.

One man was taken to Kootenai Medical Center via ambulance, where he was listed in serious condition Saturday afternoon.

The material involved in the incident was determined to be exploding target material purchased over the counter at a local sporting goods store.

Too close to the fire... Implying the fire was already going? They didn’t really need the accelerant, did they? Me thinks they were just screwing around and got burned...

Ban exploding target material!

Don't laugh, it's popular stuff sold under several names, the most well known of which is Tannerite.

I was duck hunting with a guy once who was so desparate to light his cigarette that he tried to use his shotgun.

Along with the fireball, he forgot about the shot...

Or it was one of those, “Here, throw the whole bag in to get it going good” moments.

Evidently they ran out because they drove to the store to get some more.

Tannerite is highly stable and may only be detonated with a supersonic rifle round.

Gasoline on the other hand is highly volitile.

severally injuring the man’s hand.

Would that be severely or was his hand severed? Inquiring minds and all..

Oooh, possible living Darwin Award candidate!

P.S. "Severally injuring?"
