Best Cure for a Hangover? Don't Get One
San Francisco Chronicle ^ | Tuesday, December 25, 2012 | Kathryn Roethel

Myth: Coffee ... or vitamins ... or something else ... is clinically proven to cure a hangover.

Fact: There will be a lot to toast to this New Year's Eve, but if you're hoping a strong pot of coffee, an over-the-counter painkiller or a strange blended concoction you read about online will cure your hangover the next morning, think again.

The British Medical Journal determined that, despite the thousands of alleged cures you can find with a Google search, most aren't clinically tested, and the ones that are don't work, though some may ease certain hangover symptoms.

In 2005, researchers combed databases and conference proceedings and talked to pharmacists and drug manufacturers looking for any hangover cure studies they could get their hands on. They came up with only 15, and they disqualified seven of those for faulty research methods. The remaining studies tested propranolol, a beta-blocking medication often used to treat heart conditions; tropisetron, a prescription commonly given to ease nausea in chemotherapy patients; and the anti-inflammatory painkiller tolfenamic acid. The researchers also looked at the simple sugars, fructose and glucose, as well as a yeast-based concoction and three plant-based dietary supplements.

A McD's 2-Cheeseburger value meal (2 regular cheeseburgers, fries, coke) always wipes out out any bad hangovers for me. Works like a charm, and I've recommended it to friends who have had good results.

The only trouble was actually GETTING upright, out of the house, and down the street to McD's.

Pedialite. Infant formula. Works like a charm. A little before going to bed, a lot the next morning.

I prefer orange flavor.

Good call on the Pedialyte. That stuff is great, like you said, if you have it before going to bed.

Orange flavor is good, but the hard-to-find Bubblegum flavor is fantastic! :)

The real solution is to find a drink that doesn't give you a hangover in the first place.

Barring that, an old bartender once suggested 1000mg of vitamin c before bed. Hasn't failed me yet.

The key to not getting a hangover is to drink regularly and build up your resistance. Then you can outdrink your fellow partiers and wake up refreshed, healthy, and happy, while they have horrible hangovers and wish they were dead.

Works for me anyway. I haven’t had a hangover in years, I forgot what it is like.

Just don’t get sober. Stay drunk and you will never have a hangover.

I don’t drink anymore but I found that clear alcohols didn’t give me hangovers as much as things like dark rum.

Fortunately I have drastically cut back on alcohol....but one remedy for hangover that I found effective was milk and ibuprofen

Drink at least a pint of whole milk (no less than 2% milk). During this, take one to three ibuprofen

Milk takes time to digest....so fluid just does not pass thru your body. Alcohol is a diuretic and fluid will just pass thru your body...you need to keep fluids in. The ibuprofen is for pain

Same here, man! I don't drink anymore.
Of course...I don't dring any less...

Don't get me wrong; it's not like I have a drinking problem or nothing. I used to have a drinking problem but now I actually LIKE the stuff!

Drink a couple bottles of water after a night of drinking and just before you go to bed. Hangover much, much less severe in the morning.

The other cure is a beer for breakfast the morning after a night out drinking. But watch out, that beer will slam you.

“ACLI-MATE”! Great product. Doesn’t taste that great but it’s “like it never even happened”!

eat a few pickles before going to bed (or just one big one). Pepperoncini’s work as well.

I quit smoking 6 years ago. I stopped getting hangovers 6 years ago and I drink twice what I did 6 years ago. Go figure!

“Eat a few pickles before going to bed...”

I have a friend that was born and raised in Moldova (now an American citizen). She swears the old country’s method for a hangover was pickle juice. I don’t drink much myself but I found your suggestion and hers related.

My solution - get older and mature. Then drink quality over quantity.

You spend the same, enjoy it more.

Here’s even a better solution.. Don’t drink at all. That way, you wake up fresh and happy and you get to tell everyone else all the stupid things they did instead of worrying about all the stupid things you did. HAPPY NEW YEAR TO ALL MY FREEPER FRIENDS!!!

I think it has to do with the brine’s antidiuretic effects. College football and NFL teams now stock coolers of pickle juice during summer workouts to avoid dehydration.
