Vanity: Looking for good TV/Cable TV dramas. Any suggestions?
me

Posted on 11/12/2012 3:14:13 PM PST by Leaning Right

A couple of weeks ago I was aimlessly changing channels when I came across CBS's "Vegas", a drama about the mob in Las Vegas in the early 1960's. It's a fantastic show, with a strong sense of right and wrong, and I didn't even know that the show existed.

So evidently not all of TV is either mindless reality or bland comedy. Any suggestions for other good TV dramas?

I watch Breaking Bad, Mad Men, Walking Dead, Sons of Anarchy, Justified, It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, Boardwalk Empire, Game of Thrones, Dexter, Homeland, Burn Notice. It’s an ironic world, and simultaneously television is more of a wasteland than it has ever been with Reality tv, and as good or better than ever with the post-Sopranos boom of cinematic quality—albeit with graphic violence, gross nudity, and moral confusion—cable shows.

The Walking Dead-—best show on TV, bar none.

And if you aren’t into zombies, doesn’t matter...odds are you’ll get hooked on the intense drama and suspense.

Lost is my favorite show ever.
Pay:
Boardwalk empire, dexter , homeland
Cable:
Walking dead, NCIS , castle, person of interest.

Netflix streaming 7.95 / month
Wish I could drop cable . $20 more a month on top of Internet. Hard to refuse .
Too many high buildings and I live 2 miles from small airport . Tried just about every OTA antenna.

I also second Vegas, Last Resort, Elementary, Person of Interest.

Hell on Wheels is another good show. Two seasons on AMC aired. Not sure if it will be back for a third season though.

Also check out Copper on BBC America. The 1st season just finished, and will be coming back next year. Copper takes place in the Five Points area of NY City in mid 1860's. Civil War is still going on. Story follows an Irish Union vet turned cop. BBC America will also be premiering a new series in early 2013 titled "Ripper Street." It's another period crime drama that takes place in Whitehall in the year following the Ripper crimes.

Also recommend A&E series "Longmire." 1st season finished recently, and will be coming back for a 2nd season in 2013. Robert Taylor stars as Walt Longmire, the Sheriff of the fictional Absaroka County. Program is based on mystery novels by Craig Johnson. Lou Diamond Phillips plays his Native-American friend, who owns the local bar and grill, and works with Walt to solve crimes, and acts as a mediary between the sheriff and the Cheyenne Reservation Police.

Another program that will be starting on Fox early next year is "The Following," starring Kevin Bacon and James Purefoy. Wiki description: "The series follows an FBI agent who finds himself in the middle of a network of serial killers, when a diabolical serial killer uses special technology to create them." Purefoy plays the serial killer.

Other programs I like: Once Upon a Time, American Horror Story, The Walking Dead, Fringe (last season), Haven, Warehouse 13, Touch.

Forgot last resort . Was on the fence but as of last show I like it.
Liked the idea of revolution better but didn’t make it past 2nd show.

Sons of anarchy is also one of the best well written shows on now. Not exactly moral show.

Being on NBC I was afraid it may start having gay scenes. Really liked Jericho , so was looking forward to it. Will check it out on Netflix .

I didn't vote for Obama.

I voted for George Washington, just like I told the RINOS I would all the way through the primary, and today I don't feel like a two dollar whore.

How do you feel after voting for a guy who governed to the left of Bill Clinton on every issue ?

Congress didn’t like George Washington later in the war.
They only supported him because he was popular and people wanted an individual figure to look up to like the British had King George.

I’m guessing if you were on congress back then you would have supported king George to spite George Washington
whom Didn’t fit your ideals.
:)

I was looking up the Cantenna from Burn Notice. Found that there are some antennas that can be made that are better than what you can buy. Involves a board and some other stuff. You might see if it would work for you.

I like Bones, which will be honoring veterans tonight on their episode, 8pm, EST, Fox. I’m enjoying Revolution, also tonight, 10pm, EST, NBC. And I like Major Crimes, the spin-off from The Closer, on TNT, but the first season has concluded. After that, SouthLand and Rizzoli and Isles, also on TNT but not new seasons haven’t started yet.

So if that’s true why do I like Burn Notice so much and Hated McGyver?

Steve Buscemi works in the role of Nucky Thompson because he is not a cartoon mob boss, not at all a stereotype, imho. A very cold, disciplined, cynical man who does not deign to dirty his hands because he has people for that. Almost prissy he’s so fastidious, but lethal. I think he’s perfect in the role.

Also, I went looking for a trailer or something that would capture Game Of Thrones for anyone who might be interested, but be warned, it’s not at all for children for a variety of reasons. It is haunting, though:

In case you're interested, the History Channel will be airing a new scripted historical drama series titled "Vikings" next summer. IMDb synopsis: "Vikings follows the adventures of Ragnar Lothbrok the greatest hero of his age. The series tells the sagas of Ragnar's band of Viking brothers and his family, as he rises to become King of the Viking tribes. As well as being a fearless warrior, Ragnar embodies the Norse traditions of devotion to the gods, legend has it that he was a direct descendant of Odin, the god of war and warriors."

Travis Fimmel stars as Ragnar Lothbrok. Fimmel starred as a rookie partner to seasoned FBI agent Patrick Swayze in "The Beast."

We like:
Burn Notice
Breaking Bad
Major Crimes (continuation of The Closer)

Sometimes we catch Madmen, but just now and then, so have no continuity. It’s very weird.
