A recent study noted that the majority of people have enough food in their pantries to feed their household for about three days and that seemingly stable societies are really just nine meals from anarchy. With most of us dependent on just-in-time transportation systems to always be available, few ever consider the worst case scenario.

For tens of thousands of east coast residents that worst case scenario is now playing out in real-time. No longer are images of starving people waiting for government handouts restricted to just the third-world.

In the midst of crisis, once civilized societies will very rapidly descend into chaos when essential infrastructure systems collapse.

Though the National Guard was deployed before the storm even hit, there is simply no way for the government to coordinate a response requiring millions of servings of food, water and medical supplies

Many east coast residents who failed to evacuate or prepare reserve supplies ahead of the storm are being forced to fend for themselves.

Frustration and anger have taken hold, as residents have no means of acquiring food or gas and thousands of trucks across the region remain stuck in limbo.

Many of you who follow my post have seen me use this quote to describe what can happen in a grid down SHTF situation:

I have even gotten complaints I use it to much and that using a quote from a SciFi/Fantasy TV Program lessens the seriousness of the subject of preparedness.

Well read this quote from the AP story- Exasperation builds on Day 3 in storm-stricken NYC:"You can clearly tell at the office, or even walking down the street, who has power and who doesn't," said Jordan Spiro, who lives in the blackout zone. "New Yorkers may not be known as the friendliest bunch, but take away their ability to shower and communicate and you'll see how disgruntled they can get."

I usually ignore detractors to that quote - yes it is from sci-fi TV show- but is pretty well spot on.
Having read what happened in Bosnia and Argentina - Americans are much less forgiving when the amenities disappear

I’ve got no sympathy what soever. It’s not like they didn’t know it was coming. Being unprepared is expected by the entitlement crowd... “government will provide”.

No kidding, I live in Niantic Connecticut, in Giants Neck. We were clobbered, and my power will be out for at least 5 more days, if Im lucky.

Am I Cold, no, my heat works due to the wonder of my generators (Thats two one 6.5 KW and One 3 Kw). I started out with 45 gallons of gas 4 days ago (Plus full tanks in the generators, cars, and snow blower.) One I bought generator 6 years ago, and the other after Irene, I wanted a quieter unit for after dark. At the rate I burn gas, I’m set for at least 7 more days, and I could easily stretch it to 10 or 11.

Am I hungry, no, I keep a months supply of canned goods, dry goods, and MREs in the pantry. I have a gas grill and a two burner camping stove that broke the bank at 39.00 from Campmor.

Am I thursty, No I filled my 10, 5 gallon cans on Sunday, A day before the storm. Then filled the bath tubs Monday.

What part of “This is going to be a historic storm” that was being sung from the rooftops for almost 5 full days didn’t they get. Even Monday morning it was still not that bad yet, the worst around here was after dark on Monday night.

You bring up an excellent point that I think a lot of folks overlook. That is, having a sufficient supply of water for drinking and bathing. I keep several sealed water jugs in my “emergency closet” at all times, so that I have at least a week’s worth of drinking water if things go south. A couple times a year, I rotate in fresh stock and keep the old ones in the garage for an emergency supply of bath and wash water.

This has become Obama’s Katrina. ....But it is STILL Bush’s fault. He could’ve stopped Global warming, shored up the East Coast and stocked the electricity in lithium batteries. Sheesh!

Live in CT, but in the greater Hartford area, which last year took the brunt of that freak October storm, while the southern part did better. This time it is the southern part that got hit bad and the northern part was better off. Just came home from a spiritual retreat when I had to get to the store and prepare fast. Only lost my power for one day. Back on now.

My former landlord asked me why I used to keep 10 buckets full of water in my room. One, it helps regulate heat. Two - water is by far the greatest need.

Heck, I dropped about 40 bucks for two kits that let me fill, for lack of a better word, a bathtub-sized bag with water, seal it, and then install a hand-pump on top (comes with the kit).

Called a WaterBob, each one stores ~100 gallons.
