What would they be? A gun? Then you are only allowed to bring 2 bullets..see how that works?? Some basic ground rules..has to be a realistic items you can get you hands on today..no tanks etc. You are going with just the clothes on your back + the 3 items to survive an mingle with the folks of the day. Never coming back.

Saw this question on another site and wanted to see what you guys would come up with..I will post that link tomorrow after everyone has a chance to come up with their ideas..some people came up with good ideas (detailed history text of the time in Europe, antibiotics) and other people's ideas..not so much.

Perhaps get the pages enclosed in that plastic stuff...what do you call it... All I can think about in this mental exercise is me compiling all the notes I need then promptly, 30 minutes into the trip, dropping the whole thing of paper into a river.

>>>they had bibles in 742 AD!

Oh... You read Latin or Greek? Oh... You got a plan to get into the monestaries to read the bible... Or do you plan on taking gold as an item to buy a Latin/Greek text for yourself? One thing for certain... You aren't gonna pop down to the life way store and buy a KJV/NIV/ESV.

So much for taking a bar of bath soap.

Why? They had soap and fairly good soap at that.

I’m not going anywhere without my microwave oven!

Or at least a good wood burning stove for warmth and cooking!

1. a hand operated printing press
2. the method to make rag paper
3. a typewriter or the design for a ball point pen

The main downfall of civilization was the lack of the ability to make cheap paper. Why learn to read when you might see two books in your life time?

When Rome held Egypt there was a thriving paper industry and people learned to read if only to read the latest cheap thriller. (Yep they had those too!)

Make paper cheap and printing easy and you avoid the dark ages altogether.

While I was there I would invent the wheelbarrow, the horse collar and general ledger accounting.

1. A portable DVD player.
2. A solar battery.
3. The first season DVD of Lancelot Link Secret Chimp.

Let the people of the 8th century think that's what the future becomes. Somebody might write a book about it.
