In S M Stirling’s series, the laws of physics mysteriously change, in a twentieth century mysteriously left behind when the Island of Nantucket is hurled back in time to the bronze age.

The first three novels deal with the residents of Nantucket adapting to and influencing the world in the bronze age.

Then Stirling started a series showing the world left behind, in which many laws of physics change. Electricity and explosives suddenly don’t work, and neither internal nor external combustion engines work. the workd is suddenly in the pre gunpowder iron age. Billions die of starvation, disease, and predation from animals and people who adapt better.

The result is a collection of feudal warlord dominated political entities.

>>After fifteen years, the population were too stupid to figure out how to develop things?

The event also caused everyone to start thinking like a liberal with an Ethinic Studies degree.

“Why kill animals for meat? Just go to the grocery stores and get it.”

“Electric cars don’t pollute or use energy. You just plug them into the wall.”

“A muslim who cuts your head off is just a misunderstood victim of colonialism, but a Christian who eats a chicken sandwich is EVIL!!”

A world full of these people could not figure out how to make a permanent magnet generator.

I have it on my DVR (because I was ready for some football last night). The premise seemed to be a little silly. Even with some massive EMP burst, people would be working to rebuild generators that day to get some local electrical service running, if for nothing else than to run some water pumps. And how many days would it take for people to rig up some wood powered steam engines?

I tried to watch this show, but the actors were dressed for New York Fashion Week.

Apparently Cosmetic Dentistry doesn’t require electricity.

Also, good to see that Proactiv skin care products can be distributed so widely without infomercials and FedEx.

I caught about 10 minutes of it.. I had to turn it off.

I must say, that was quite the fashionable maroon leather outfit the girl had on.. (shakes head)

Where did all the water come from? How does losing electricity cause churches to be submerged?

Well I figure the dam or levy broke..

She is definitely easy on the eyes. BTW Elizabeth Mitchell who played Juliette in Lost is going to be major character in the series.

Looks like a Hunger Games rip-off, and of course nowadays only females can be heroes.

The odd thing about all these throw back shows, is how we never get thrown back to the reality of men being the overwhelmingly dominate sex.

Watched the preview last week. Sure, you have to suspend belief...much like a Jay Carney press conference. But at least this is only TV!!

I am a fan of J.J. Abrams, so I will watch at least another episode or two and see how it shapes up.

I also tried to watch the new Fox offering “Mob Doctor” last night. Stupid premise, bad acting and generally dull. Turned it off after ten minutes.

15 years, and no steam technology replacing what was lost?

Only the bad guy has a semi-automatic weapon, and apparently revolver technology has been lost, too?

Everyone in central Illinois decided that after this event gun control by a benevolent tyrant was OK?

The chick does look like she just stepped off the Hunger games set.

I’ll probably catch it if I’m flipping channels and land on it by happen stance, or when it hits net-flix instant watch. Until that time, it’s not on the calendar.

shoot high-tech crossbows that require aluminum bolts that never get lost or broken and even the strings are still in perfect shape after 15 years.

And eye glasses. First thing I thought of was the Twilight episode of guy who lived to read books but his glasses broke first thing after the disaster. Yes, the show was exactly like the handful of other disaster shows. Don't know why I was expecting it to rise above but it failed. The kung fu Rambo dude who wiped out an entire squad of militia practically single handedly and the evil militia hunky boyfriend who rats out the girl, uh, no, five minutes later saves the girl, uh, no, goes back to the militia. Uh, no, that asthma medicine isn't going to work after all those years and what's with the brother being so weak he's practically bedridden? And about that black woman, she violated the first rule of any restistance - keep it on the down low and do not advertise that you have something muy importante behind a door with so many locks and bolts that it's straight out of a cartoon. Am I going to watch this again? Uh, no.

I need to find the manufacturer of that AC/DC tshirt if it holds up that well after 15 years.

The event 15 years ago was the election of Obama to a second term.
The medallion is the medal he gave himself when he proclaimed himself olympic basketball, pool and drawing champion.
The woman is actually Obama himself.

Obama essentially realizes that it wasn’t necessary for anyone to Go Galt. He drove the producers and creators out of society without their choosing to leave, so ‘Revolution’ is a sort of passive take on Ayn Rand.

Wow, Tough crowd that does not think things through..with most of the world population gone there would be a ton of unused clothes in old homes. If I lived through this I would never wear anything twice, just pitch it and rifle through clothing stores, closets in homes etc. for the next days wear.

As for eye glasses same thing, they would be everywhere...find a set that matched my needs.

as for the other poster mentioning why no steam power maybe that is being used in other areas and they are more advanced??? Why are some people still living on earth today in AC comfort and some still living like it's 1750?

If you ran for your life over the past 14-15 hours from a militia out to kill you(on horseback no less) I would think you would be tired too.

Loved the first few books in Stirling’s Emberverse, but the last couple have seemed like he is reaching for a reason to keep writing.

Ugh. Forget about it. (Thought it was on tonight, acutally.) Just as well, I was taping other stuff last night because I wasn’t watching anything in real time.

That was my immediate thought as well. You can't disable pressurized, heated water kept in a contained vessel. No matter how you say "Physics all went haywire!"

It would be a certainty that farming with steam-powered implements would be a mainstay in the first Spring after the apocalypse. In fact, I would have expected a fully formed economic system after only a few months of un-powered life, mostly built on the bartering of necessities and agricultural goods.

I’m reading the last one. I hope it’s the one that makes the connection, and that we find out how William Walker’s daughter, or other decendents, have caused the whole mess.
