Lets hear some of your stories of how much happier&well off you were in the 1990/91/92 era. Talk about a "Who Knew"! Look at where we are 20 years later! In 1992, Bush was President,we were gradually coming out of a recession, food&fuel prices were reasonable, depending on where you lived, housing was affordable and the music of that time was great! And Who Would Of Ever Imagined That 20 Years Later We Would Be In Dire Straights Thanks To Democrats! 1990 was rough, but we pulled out of it. The Pelosi/Reid/Obama Recession started six years ago with no end in sight!
This was my story, in 1992,I was living in luxury in Naples for $80.00 a week. I was working for the Marriott Marco Island Resort in hospitality, right on the beach and I couldn’t be happier. One major difference 20 years ago. In every major resort and condo complex, there wasn’t much security, you could drive right into a marriot/hilton/ritz carelton, park within walking distance and walk right in. But in 2002/03 that all ended. Now most luxury resorts and condos have guard gates!
Heck the W years seem pretty good compared to His O’liness, despite being the supposed “worst economy since the depression”.
Yep..late 80s early 90s...good ole days
The economy in California during the early 1990’s was terrible. In 1991, Governor Petie Wilson pushed through a massive tax increase that plunged our state into recession. We didn’t recover until the mid-1990’s.
thousands of naples residents wanted to kick themselves in the butt when they had the chance to buy a home/condo for 50/60/70 grand. Including me! I was looking at new homes that were going for around 80G. UHHHHGG! I could of flipped it for $250,000 about 7/8 years later.
Slick Willie’s years look like a picnic compared to this nightmare...and trust me - I was absolutely NO FAN of Clintoon, by any stretch of the imagination. But, my goodness - this evil man in the WH right now is scaring the living daylights out of me. I think at least, Clinton liked America a little bit - unlike the current resident of the WH.
1990 was a bitch! especially in Massachusetts,me,my,brother&sister were living with parents and it seemed like living in a funeral home. I finally gave up and eventually got on a plane in november, flew to sarasota, rented out a room on longboat key for 75.00 a week/w/private beach. I was a food prep for the charthouse restaurant making $5.50 hr and I was sooo happy!
I was better off financially, single and free. At 46 I married a woman with four kids. I had to give up a lot. Best thing I ever did. Money ain’t everything.
You are a brave man.
we could all make a list of things we miss from the 90’s. I miss “Its Hammer Time”! The “Ice Ice Baby” Craze, and last butt not least “I LIKE BIG BUTTS”! {great underwater video}
When I returned home from the Gulf War and became a civilian (in the early 90’s), I can recall seeing for the very first time, the seeds of political correctness emerging. It went downhill from there.
Never before nor since had one nation so dominated the world--rival empires and dictatorships trembled and pulled in their horns. The Evil Empire, foe of forty five years was tottering and ready to fall. The Military and diplomatic might of the USA was un-rivalled.
At home the middle class grew by leaps and bounds and the minority population prospered like never before nor since. The economy was referred to by the stunned and chastened "experts" of Europe as "The American Miracle."
Never had the entire world been more at peace, never had the "shining city on a hill" been closer to reality.
Yes the nineties broke in the light of a bold new dawn.
Thanks Ryan_Rubio_2016.
In 1991 I was married to a successful executive who was very good at handling money. We had just built a gorgeous house and were happily filling it with antiques, art, oriental rugs. We entertained generously, vacationed in Europe, and had another vacation house in a ski resort. I wasn’t too extravagant, but I was able to buy nice clothes, and if I wanted new ski equipment or lessons, no problem. I didn’t work, just took care of our kids and made sure my husband had the perfect home life. There was a lot of time spent at the pool, or teaching the kids, or taking them to museums. If the oil in our cars needed to be changed, we actually PAID someone to change it! We ran the air-conditioning when it was hot, instead of sweltering and sweating; we kept the house heated in the winter. In retrospect, it seems incredible.
Boy, were we spoiled! Not in a nasty, demanding way; we were grateful for what we had and we did try to share it. I just mean that we didn’t think it would ever end.
It did, though. With a bang. My life is so very different now. I’m glad I had that sweet time in my life, but it’s lost forever.
I’m still lucky, still blessed, but I do wish there was money for nice food again, or a reasonable temperature in winter, or air-conditioning when it’s 105. That would be nice.
A lot of people knew that the early nineties were boom-times in many ways. I remember having conversations about it, about how good times never last and how best to take advantage of it. We did ok.
and would anyone here give up steak and pizza to go back to 1990? I would,,hey, I would even give up Whoppers!
for anyone here who has ever been to Longboat Key Florida (my first stop) God, what a paradise! as i mentioned, I worked for the Chart House there, Damn, we are all in our 20’s, early 30’s,having the time of our lives with the music playing in the kitchen, servers were dancing on the clock, not a worry in the world, so much happiness. and like I said in the post,,who knew we would be in such a mess 20 years later?
Can’t say I was entirely fond of the early-90s, as I was already detecting a noticeable downward slide from the heights of the Reagan era. But, compared to now, it does seem like heaven. Lots of little time-frames and eras can be pointed to on our journey of cultural decay (the late-60s being top-of-the-list), but I do view the advent of Clinton a pretty noticeable marker. Seemed like he really dragged the culture down, with shockingly low standards of character and comportment in his wake. I don’t think I’ve ever really viewed America the same way since.
and for those of you who were teens/20’s going into the 80’s,consider yourselves blessed. you were at the right age at the right time. as we all know...the 80’s and 90’s were in a sense,,One Big Party! (minus a few years of recession),,the 80’s were off to a rough start, and by 1983ish, the economy began coming back and Boy Did We Party! I lived in Boca Raton/Lauderdale in the mid-80’s...God what a time of wonderment! Night Clubs galore and dance music was peaking,,,and girls ! girls! girls! were everywhere!
1990 and 1991 saw me in Saudi Arabia. Crazy days indeed.
My toddlers at home, wife watching the news every night to see what was going on.
I realize now, they had it much harder than I did, emotionally.
In 1990 I was working a construction job for $8 bucks an hour, sharing an apartment with a friend, had a three year old Chevy, full benefits(Blue Cross and Blue Shield and didn’t have to pay a dime for for them) was unmarried and generally doing ok. Wow. 22 years ago. Long time gone...
“Money ain’t everything’’. Beats what ever is in second place. (just kiddin’).
Well stated. I’m 56. The America I grew up in has vanished.
bttt
You ain’t kiddin’ brother! I was in my 20’s in the Eighties, living in Northern NJ and partying in NYC clubs, yeah the music and the girls! “Dancing with myself,oh oh dancing with myself..’’
It’s Perot’s fault.
