Hey there .... been through this myself and it’s brutally hard. I’m not going to kid you. Every single August is hard and has been hard for a while.
My best advice is to accept and acknowledge your loss - and it IS a loss. Your former life is truly gone and to deny that gives it a dis-service. Give yourself a chance to be sad for a few days, then start focusing on your new life - the one where YOU are the star of the show, where YOU get to decide what to do with your time rather than be at the whims of another.
Next summer will be awesome fun when your house fills up again, but you will probably notice a bit of eagerness to get back to you. Every year I’m happy to see them come home, but then if I’m honest, I’m happy to have the house back to myself, even though there is some sadness to see them go.
Very, very soon will be the time for you to embrace a new project and you will figure out you are no longer just a parent, but a person with your own identity.
But for tonight, do not cry because it is over, smile because it happened.

Wait until she comes home with 6 weeks of laundry and expects you to do it! lol
It's not that I don't like my kids or want to be rid of them, but I feel I've failed as a parent if they don't leave the nest and set down roots of their own someplace else. In fact, one of my biggest nightmares is having my 30-something year old kids still living with me. That is a horror I hope I never have to contemplate.
That all said, they are always welcome back for Christmas, birthdays and barbeques.

Holy cow! Leave it to the government to take 3 hours to go 20 miles.
