Update - hubby was in town and was kind enough to call and ask if we needed dog food. Well, as to be expected, there are no more of the 10% bonus bags so we’re officially in the 40 lb. reduced size.

I clean the shelf whenever the Blue Diamond almonds are on on sale. Of course, our one and only grocery store usually clears the selves of sale or coupon (not that our local paper has coupons) items asap. I’ve posted before that it’s like making a drug deal (not that I’d know about those) whenever I demand they go to the back and bring out the advertised items. The usual reply is, “the truck didn’t come in” or claim I can only get one. Yeah, seems that HEB delivery truck always arrives empty. They had boneless beef ribs on sale this last week and they only had 4 packages... like I’m that dumb. I’ve noticed they haven’t had reduced prices on older produce since last summer.

This has been going on for at least two years. A lot of bacon brands are now 12-14 ounces, not a full pound. A half gallon of ice cream is now 1.75 quarts. Everything is shrinking, and shrinking how far our paycheck will go today. The only thing expanding is the price.

We used to buy a 1/2 gal of ice cream. Check your labels, mine says 1.5. And the price was definitely not lower.

This week I actually bought a few boxes of Great Value cereals, to gIve them a try. They were only about $2 a box and decent size. The way we go through cereal i just won’t pay $4 for a ten oz box.

The one that has ticked me off recently is Ricotta cheese. It is now in 15 oz containers, instead of 1lb. So, if I have a recipe that requires one pound of ricotta cheese, I am required to buy a 2 pound container, or 2- 15 oz containers. As a baker this realllllly ticks me off!

Tuna used to come in 7-ounce cans, maybe even 7.5-ounce cans. When I was in grade school and junior high, my mom would stretch one of those cans to make 3 lunch sandwiches, one sandwich for each of us sisters.

Costco, so far, still sells 7-ounce cans of tuna (its own brand), or at least they recently did.

Same thing for cat food...

You’ll not save major bucks by shopping around, but every little bit helps, especially now.

I’ve started doing a fair amount of my grocery shopping on-line. Sometimes I have to up the quantity to get free shipping but, it’s food, it will get eaten eventually. Plus there’s no sales tax and the product is delivered to the front door.

I heard the little boy call in to Rush yesterday complaining that Lay’s potato chip bags are only half full today and the price has increase. Rush kinda backed him up when he was given a bag of Lay’s while on the air.

Many, many food companies are doing this to increase profits. Look at what has happened to the ice cream half-gallon containers.

"I noticed this too but the competitor was similarly re-sized as well. I bought the competitor anyway."

I was talking with someone today who just saw a "Spartan Store Brand" (bargain brand) six pack of raisins with the old, larger size boxes, but the person wasn't sure if that was just some old packages on the shelf still, or if "Spartan" still makes that size box.

(I believe that Spartan brand is only available in a handful of states.)

That is aggravating.

I wonder how this practice spread around to so many products so fast.

One food company had to be the first to do it, then somehow the insidious secret and practice apparently spread around to a whole lot of other food product companies fairly quickly.

Can you think of some effective way to seriously mount a backlash of some kind against these food providers, to show our displeasure, and possibly get them to reconsider their measurement chicanery?

"We used to buy a 1/2 gal of ice cream. Check your labels, mine says 1.5. And the price was definitely not lower."

You're right.

Now that I think about them, the new smaller packs of ice cream don't go nearly as far as the old ones, and that's especially noticeable if you're trying to give some to a bunch of people. You have to buy at least two of them now to give more than a tiny spoonful to a small group of people.

"Everybody has been doing it for a couple of years, and it is going to get worse."

I'm sure you're right about that.

I hadn't noticed the raisin switch before just the other day, but the guy who made the youtube clip apparently discovered it months ago.

(I like the way he showed the old and new packages together, as well as his two Walmart receipts, and how he pointed out that an adult can't even get their finger into the new smaller kind of raisin boxes. I thought he documented the problem pretty well, at least for raisins.)

Last week, our local newspaper went to a smaller sized paper and it seemed to have the same amount of pages.

Even our church bulletin is smaller this week.
Smaller paper . . . smaller typeface . . .
Here was the explanation in the bulletin:

New Look, Same Info
The same great information is included in this
bulletin but in a more streamlined way. You
can always read longer articles on our website.

Good to know. I think we only have Sun Maid and HEB but will definitely look for Del Monte.

Th3 grocery sales circular came out today and there’s nothing worth making the trip for:

Store brand bulk sausage had been $2 lb. and is now “on sale” for $2.50 lb.

Last year’s school supplies sale was 10 cents on the following but today’s prices have gone up to $1.50 for a 70 sheet spiral notebook, folder 15 cents, glue 50 cents.

Didn’t the 70 sheet spiral notebooks used to be 75 or 100? 70 is such an odd number.

Soon we will be like Europe. No real sales, bargains or couponing.
