Vanity - Opinion on Can-Am Spyder (3-wheeler)
n/a ^ | myself

Posted on 07/30/2012 5:45:00 AM PDT by Jonah Hex

All,

I'm now north of 50, married, with kids finally moving out of the house. The family van is ready for retirement, so I'm thinking of a fun vehicle for commuting to work (about 10 miles daily) and the occasional "fun" ride down the Colonial Parkway with my wife. I used to ride a Kawasaki 305 back in my 20's, but gave it up when I got married (yeah, I know, whipped).

Anyway, the Can-Am caught my attention as an "alternative" bike. I like quite a few of the features as well as the "quirkiness". I believe I could talk my wife into riding it with me. "If Momma's happy..."

Thinking of arranging a test ride before I seriously start pursuing the idea. Looking for comments/opinions, especially technical/maintainence/safety. I know, a Can-Am is not a real motorcycle, it's a crutch for those who can't or won't ride a real bike. Nevertheless, looking for input, especially from Can-Am riders.

I remember the good ol’ days when I could disappear for hours and nobody could get hold of me.

Now, if I ‘don’t pick up’, I get griped at for not having the phone on/with me/whatever.

What part of “I want to be unreachable and *away* from everything” is so hard to understand?

Cell phones are an invisible leash.

I’d be surprised by that but apparently, everybody already does and they’re all driving in front of me on every road so the government needn’t bother.

A friend of mine traded in his GoldWing for a Spyder about 4 months ago. He says he has put more miles on that Spyder in that time than he did in 2 years of the Honda.

He traded because he had knee surgery. He LOVES his Can-Am Spyder. He wife loves it as well because she no longer worries about possibly falling over.

I am scared to death of motorcycles but he has me thinking of buying a Spyder!

I ride a Harley, and I put two fingers down when I pass a trike. Your think that it’s BS, is BS.

2 words - “Go Galt”; if you can get along without it, don’t spend. Also, you may want the money for more important things in 3 months.

Only 1 exception to Galt - BLOAT

I just said “Yeah. Every biker on earth knows every other biker.”.

Might as well. Generally, it takes less than two minutes for someone to pull over and ask if they can render assistance if I pull off the road for some reason.

I have a Suzuki SV650s. It’s a sweet bike. I had a buddy that, due to an accident with his heavy, had gotten a Bergman scooter, also by Suzuki, and we used to go riding. Same dang bike. Different body style (step-thru) and an automatic transmission. But he could keep up with me shift for shift and run it up to 90 no problemo. So, if you’re still considering two wheels, you might very well like some of the scooters, probably cheaper too.

And I wonder about high speed cornering with those things. They say they’re good at it but 3 wheelers are notoriously unstable.

I have to admit, the Ural/sidecar combo caught my attention. With a max recommended speed of 65mph, however, that would be an issue with my local Interstate (70 mph in portions).

Heck, they change tires at 65mph on I95! :-)

Those are available in the US again.

Also, do take the Can-Am for a spin, they're rather odd to ride. Not really like a motorcycle at all. And they're really expensive.

Here is another option if you have a fear of falling over and don't want any of those hard-tail pound-yer-butt-going-down-the-road trikes but do want all the latest tech and gadgets.

Yup, there are Honda Goldwing trikes now.
