When I was four or five my mom and I would spend summers at a rooming house on B112th street in Rockaway NY. There was an very large elderly man who lived there for the whole summer. My dad told me always to respect him because he was a great patriot. Years later he explained to me that the eldery gentleman was Pat MacDonald who won shot put Golds in 1912 and 1920. He carried the flag in ‘12 and he continued the tradition begun by his friend and teammate Ralph Rose. “This flag dips to no earthly king.”

I had to look it up in Wikipedia
To dip a flag that is being carried means to lower it by turning it forward from an upright position to 45° or horizontal. This is done as a sign of respect or deference.
(It is done by lowering to half mast and returning to full mast position.)(See below.)
To dip the flag on a merchant vessel passing a naval vessel involves lowering the stern flag (the country flag) to the half-mast position and back to the truck as the vessels pass abeam of each other. The half-mast position in this case being one flag width from the truck as in the case of half mast.
Some jurisdictions have laws that discourage or prohibit the dipping of the national flag; these include the United States (with its non-binding flag code), India, Philippines and South Africa.

So... if US law says NO DIPPING of OUR FLAG, then why is there even a question about doing it ?

Are all the countries going to dip their flags as well?

What are we dipping it for ? Did someone die?

AMEN !

I came to a cash box (toll booth) one day and it was near a holiday ... I don't know, Memorial Day, 4th of July .. whatever .. and the attendent had those small American flags on the pike.

The flag at the end prompted my remark to him that our colors NEVER, under any circumstance, ever dip ... for any reason.

He said he didn't realize the flag dipped when the pike came down.

I came back through there not too long after, and the end flag was gone.

The White House is not to blame for it’s occupant.

It will need a good cleaning and fumigating when the present occupant leaves, but I believe we can get the stench out without burning it.

This was after the Brits wouldn't leave after it was clear they weren't welcome. Britain is like a woman that strikes it rich and before middle age winds up a bitter senile old bat in a nursing home asking her daughter to care for her. (how many World Wars do we have to prove that one? Or Thatcher meeting GHWB on the golf course to ask assistance with Gulf War I a war that lasted what 100 hours?)

Speaking of learning from history......learn this - we left Britain because of your tyranny; high taxes, no religious freedom, and that the state [not the church] should care for the vagrant (your Q. Eliz I being the first to implement that policy). And we burnt redcoat ass not once, but twice.

So yes, we speak English; the language we brought with us.

But remember this - your ability to not speak German......was twice preserved by us.

Put that in your straw and suck it.

I was thinking more along the lines of an exorcism.

Should he remain in the WH, our Canadian friends would be well advised to remember 1812...

...and to contemplate the simple fact that every fascist/national socialist regime in history has ended up having to invade its neighbors when they finally tax all the wealth and entrepreneurial spirit out of their own countries.

AMERICA BOWS TO NO NATION AND NEITHER DOES HER FLAG.

It’s our nation and our flag that have saved the butts of just about every european country and even china and it’s pacific islands. After we whupped the trouble makers, AMERICA then helped them become their own kind of democracies. NO!, WE BOW TO NO ONE, here on earth.

When Tony Blair addressed Congress he said he was shown the fireplace where the British burned the congressional library and then deadpanned, "sorry about that." It was hilarious.

Some British tourists were being shown around Washington by an American friend, who remarked, "You know, the British burned Washington in 1814."

The Brits were horrified. "Oh, no! We knew we burned Joan of Arc, but we thought that Washington died of natural causes."

British Terrorist Attack

How was this a terrorist attack? Except for the terrified American troops that ran from the outnumbered British Army.

The Brits were able to do this only because of the utter disorganization and incompetence of the American war effort.

Luckily for our national self-esteem, a day or so later the defense of Baltimore, and few months later the defense of New Orleans demonstrated conclusively this was not a national characteristic.

Does anyone think the White House would have burned if Jackson had been in charge of the defense of Washington?

The outcome at New Orleans was obvious. The general commanding the British Army was an idiot who decided to assault the walls with ladders that were known to be too short and refused to delay the attack. He ended up being deservedly killed in the disaster of his own making.

Having said that, Britain did win the last battle of the war by taking Fort Bowyer just before the planned assault on Mobile, Alabama. It was only then the word reached that the war was over, and the British left...

I believe that was a richly-deserved retaliation for the Americans burning York (Toronto). I say richly deserved, because the British Army specifically avoided burning and looting private property in Washington, and confined their destruction to the public buildings of the Government that had ordered the invasion of Canada...

Not exactly. The British general was Edward Pakenham, who had fought under Napoleon throughout the Peninsular War against Napoleon, and had been highly successful and honored for it. He was most definitely not the stereotypical upper-class British officer twit.

Jackson, however, outthought, outfought and outmaneuvered him throughout the campaign. And Pakenham was indeed let down by some of his subordinates. The length of the ladders, while an example of incompetence, made little practical difference, since the troops carrying the too-short ladders threw them down and ran away before they got them to the wall.

The British had about 8000 men in the battle, the Americans 3000. The Brits had about 2000 casualties, the Americans 71, making this one of the most severe defeats in all British military history.

Which just went to prove it's generally a bad idea to attack across an open field into the fire of the best riflemen in the world.

Not exactly. The Brits were in the position they were because of Jackson's maneuvering and resistance.

At the battle itself the British had 8000 men, the Americans about 3000. British casualties were about 2000, while Americans lost 71.

This was one of the most severe defeats in British military history. It just goes to show that it is generally a bad idea to advance 1/4 mile across an open field into the fire of the best riflemen in the world.
