I came to a cash box (toll booth) one day and it was near a holiday ... I don't know, Memorial Day, 4th of July .. whatever .. and the attendent had those small American flags on the pike.
The flag at the end prompted my remark to him that our colors NEVER, under any circumstance, ever dip ... for any reason.
He said he didn't realize the flag dipped when the pike came down.
I came back through there not too long after, and the end flag was gone.
The White House is not to blame for it’s occupant.
It will need a good cleaning and fumigating when the present occupant leaves, but I believe we can get the stench out without burning it.
This was after the Brits wouldn't leave after it was clear they weren't welcome. It’s our nation and our flag that have saved the butts of just about every european country and even china and it’s pacific islands. After we whupped the trouble makers, AMERICA then helped them become their own kind of democracies. NO!, WE BOW TO NO ONE, here on earth.
When Tony Blair addressed Congress he said he was shown the fireplace where the British burned the congressional library and then deadpanned, "sorry about that." It was hilarious.

How was this a terrorist attack? Except for the terrified American troops that ran from the outnumbered British Army.
The Brits were able to do this only because of the utter disorganization and incompetence of the American war effort.
Luckily for our national self-esteem, a day or so later the defense of Baltimore, and few months later the defense of New Orleans demonstrated conclusively this was not a national characteristic.

The outcome at New Orleans was obvious. The general commanding the British Army was an idiot who decided to assault the walls with ladders that were known to be too short and refused to delay the attack. He ended up being deservedly killed in the disaster of his own making.
Having said that, Britain did win the last battle of the war by taking Fort Bowyer just before the planned assault on Mobile, Alabama. It was only then the word reached that the war was over, and the British left...
I believe that was a richly-deserved retaliation for the Americans burning York (Toronto). I say richly deserved, because the British Army specifically avoided burning and looting private property in Washington, and confined their destruction to the public buildings of the Government that had ordered the invasion of Canada...

Not exactly. The British general was Edward Pakenham, who had fought under Napoleon throughout the Peninsular War against Napoleon, and had been highly successful and honored for it. He was most definitely not the stereotypical upper-class British officer twit.
Jackson, however, outthought, outfought and outmaneuvered him throughout the campaign. And Pakenham was indeed let down by some of his subordinates. The length of the ladders, while an example of incompetence, made little practical difference, since the troops carrying the too-short ladders threw them down and ran away before they got them to the wall.
The British had about 8000 men in the battle, the Americans 3000. The Brits had about 2000 casualties, the Americans 71, making this one of the most severe defeats in all British military history.
