Do you feel sorry for the poor?

Posted on 07/24/2012 5:38:52 PM PDT by sagar

Am I the only one who feels utter and total contempt for the so called poor? This is the most free, by far, any country in the history of the world, and yet we have these scum-sucking parasites that have not taken advantage of it, instead they cannot take care of themselves, their children, nor their elderly.

When I see a poor person, I am filled with disgust. How can this individual(or group of individuals) live like this and not feel that they have the opportunity just in front of them that the rest of the world would kill for?

My contempt level is pretty high for the poor parasites, but it reaches epic proportions for those that are poor and obese! How can they even live like it? Do they have no dignity? No shame?

America is wasted on them. In fact, America is now dying under their weight.

Sorry for the rant.

Good post, newzjunkey; I agree with you.

I am pretty sure that this character sagar is ON something or OUT of something that he/she SHOULD be taking as we speak; blue pill, red pill, whatever. (No, I don’t mean to make light of any mental disease and if I have offended anyone by it, I apologize in advance.)

PS: I emigrated to this ONCE great country of ours from where I was born, but have yet to find the streets paved of gold. Where are they? Please share? Yes, sagar, it IS sarcasm.

You need to be poor once. That’ll fix you up.

You are so right about poverty building character. My mother taught me the values of hard work, sacrifice, humility and honor. She also taught me that, just because a home is humble, doesn’t mean that it can’t be clean. To take joy in the little things. To value G-d and people over things. To always give your best, whatever that is, to a guest. And on and on...

Now she is accepting Social Security. She is physically broken, but she does what she can.

She did write a letter to the state gov’t telling them to please stop sending her food stamps. She told them that she had more than she needed with SS and that they should give it to someone with children.

My mother has always been ‘poor’, but she doesn’t have a bitter, cruel, angry bone in her body. She’s much richer than the OP.

I’m proud to be raised by my poor mother and I regret nothing of my childhood. Our circumstances made me a better human being and I shared those values with my two children.

Being poor does not necessarily equate with being a freeloading parasite. There are many reasons for being poor, and believe it or not many people prefer being poor to running in the modern rat race, and they do not mooch off the system. Now the fat assed, cheeto munching, dregs of society that do nothing but work the welfare system, I share your contempt for.

I've been financially comfortable, and I've been utterly destitute.

But I have never, at any time, been as “poor” as you appear to be, sagar.

When the SHTF, we now all know we can count on you to be utterly useless, and a burden to everyone.

Please respond to any posted reply on your lame, trolling thread.

Well put!

I’ve been broke (and how!). That’s when experience occurs.

But I’ve never been poor.

For the bums on the street who are mentally ill or physically unable to work I would say, “yes” to feeling sorry for them.

Everyone else who is able-bodied but unwilling to work because they are lazy and lack a work ethic I would say, “no.”

But government rewards the lazy both poor and rich.

Which poor? There are a lot of people who are poor in this country, sometimes through no fault of their own.

If you try to take care of a sick parent and the medical bills spiral out of control, you can end up losing your house and your job.

You could be a housewife with kids whose husband turned violent after being laid off and find yourself with no place to stay and no income.

On the other hand there are crackheads and bums. They can even be President of the US. These people can be jettisoned from the planet.

I think if you would have clarified your remarks... you would not have faced so much derision here. I work with “the poor” on a daily basis. They are the ones who call for help from 911 by for the most frequently. I have been frequently accused by my coworkers of being overly compassionate. They believe that by being overly accommodating that I encourage “the poor” of calling for nonsensical problems. Yesterday I went on over a dozen calls... ten of them were from “the poor”.

The majority of “the poor” that I see are not stupid. They are however too lazy to bother even making an attempt to clean up squalor that they live in. They are too lazy to fix themselves and their children nutritional meals despite receiving ample funds from the government to do so. They are too lazy and impatient to make an appointment to see a health care provider when they are feeling poorly. Instead they call 911 and want an ambulance to take them on a ride that they will never pay for.

They will tell you that they don't have enough money to buy the medications they were prescribed despite admitting to smoking three packs a day and being a drug addict or alcoholic. They feel perfectly justified about stealing what they want from people who they feel are more fortunate than them. Some of them would kill you for the $40 they could sell your wedding ring for.

I could go on and on and on. I knew exactly who Sagar was talking about when I read the post. I treat "the poor" very compassionately while on the job, because I am not in the business of judging people; my business is helping people. But the people that expect my help the most frequently are completely irresponsible and expect everyone else to take care of them. When a responsible person is dying from a heart attack... there is a pretty good chance I will be busy tending to someone who is expecting us to arrange their second or third ambulance ride of that day so that they can get some more attention and free meds from the emergency room. When I suggest that maybe their housemate who has a car could take them all hell breaks loose because they “know their rights”.

To all the self-righteous who just went on the attack... when Sagar and I are thinking of “the poor” we are not thinking about the amount of money people are getting by on.

Thank you!

It’s funny all that money I paid out of every check for many years, going into a 401k, max contributions. Then wake up one day to find the “market” had taken 90% of my 401k. That was my savings, now I have none. Had a great job, but my disabilities changed my employment, ruined my marriage and destroyed my family. One thing that sets me apart from many other poor folks, no booze, drugs, technology (smart phones/tablets etc.), smoking or living on the gov teet.

“I’ve been rich and I’ve been poor. And when I was poor, my feet were more firmly planted on the ground...”

Back through the years
I go wonderin’ once again
Back to the seasons of my youth
I recall a box of rags that someone gave us
And how my momma put the rags to use

There were rags of many colors
Every piece was small
And I didn’t have a coat
And it was way down in the fall
Momma sewed the rags together
Sewin’ every piece with love
She made my coat of many colors
That I was so proud of

As she sewed, she told a story
From the bible, she had read
About a coat of many colors
Joseph wore and then she said
Perhaps this coat will bring you
Good luck and happiness
And I just couldn’t wait to wear it
And momma blessed it with a kiss

My coat of many colors
That my momma made for me
Made only from rags
But I wore it so proudly
Although we had no money
I was rich as I could be
In my coat of many colors
My momma made for me

So with patches on my britches
Holes in both my shoes
In my coat of many colors
I hurried off to school
Just to find the others laughing
And making fun of me
In my coat of many colors
My momma made for me

And oh I couldn’t understand it
For I felt I was rich
And I told them of the love
My momma sewed in every stitch
And I told ‘em all the story
Momma told me while she sewed
And how my coat of many colors
Was worth more than all their clothes

But they didn’t understand it
And I tried to make them see
That one is only poor
Only if they choose to be
Now I know we had no money
But I was rich as I could be
In my coat of many colors
My momma made for me
Made just for me...

“May I offer A Modest Proposal?”

A great work, I read it in college. The last few sentences probably gave people in the early 1700’s heart attacks.

You have to read the annotated version to appreciate this essay; the sheer density of the sarcasm is breathtaking. Very few works in the English language have approached these levels. No wonder he went mad.

“I don’t see any middle class going to midnight movies, but I do see lots of ‘poor’ class partying from sundown to sunup, sleeping till noon, with middle class not partying, waking before dawn and turning in after they get home from work.”

You know, I saw a weird phenomenon a few weeks ago when I took a very rare day off; the traffic during the day was actually heavier than it was in rush hour. During the 1980 recession, I had a job where I drove a lot during the business day. The roads basically belonged to me from 9:30 to 4:00.

So, where did these people come from? And what were they doing?
