There are lots of experts in this forum of one kind or another. Here we have James Holmes. Why wasn't he taken down? Would you have done it?

According to an actual eyewitness in the theatre, the shooter had the perfect position to observe and fire on all exits and aisles. Anyone who popped their head up was shot.

Americans have been conditioned to think the police will save them.

......and if they did interfere, they'll get sued at best or prosecuted for assault at worst!!!

Excellant points. Even in Israel, where most citizens have served in the military, attacks on civilians not in a combat situation is very different.

In my previous post, I did also not mean to impugne the victims with guilt.

Imagine the scene. He has set off smoke grenades. Its dark. He’s wearing all black. Its loud. You are hearing shooting. Where is it coming from? The movie? Front? Back? there are scores of people moving around. Who is the culprit? The whole thing probably took no longer than 3-5 minutes. Even if you wanted to, who are you going to jump on?

UA 93, people at least knew who the enemy was, and where they were.

Unless you were nearby, just try locating a shooter in a dark theater full of panicing people.

Very few Americans have ever been trained for a situation like this. Unless you are Active Duty Army or Marine Corps, or a veteran of those 2 services, or a cop your 1st reaction is to get away.

LOL. If you are unarmed and sitting in a movie theater when a homicidal maniac opens up on you with an AK-47 or a Glock pistol, regardless of whether you are a cop or a Marine, your basic instinct is to hit the deck and escape any way you can. It is not to charge the guy with weapon.

Narrow isles in a movie theater, he could have been tackled from behind. I like to think I would have tried. Never really been a scenario like that though, who knows

I have asked this on my twitter account. Especially since there were military in the crowd.

1. This is after a man was left to die in NoVa after he was struck by a bus.

2. A woman from France attempted to walk across the metro rails after getting confused.

Then how does one explain the military personnel who were in the theater at the time? Why didn’t they stop him? Why they did end up dead?

An experiment.

With a trusted friend, or spouse or whatever, a paintball gun, a gas mask, and proper protective equipment, do the following:

Put yourself in an enclosed space, with minimal lighting (ideally, only ambient light from a television). Have your friend (or whatever), wearing a gas mask and similar protective equipment to the Aurora shooter quietly enter the room, pepper spray you, then start shooting you with the paintball gun, while you attempt to return fire with your paintball gun being more-or-less blinded.

If you add in 5 other unarmed people into your experiment, you may closely replicate the Aurora incident. When they’re running around, blinded and panicking, you will see what the theater patrons were up against.

Also consider the fact that the shooter was wearing the get-up he was, it’s entirely possible he may well have anticipated some armed resistance.

Why no one rushed him? Because no one want to get shot, that’s why. It’s called survival instinct.

If someone pulled an S&W .223 on you, and you were unarmed, and let’s say that person is 15 to 20 feet away from you, looking right at you, are you going to rush him? You wouldn’t even make it five feet before you’re filled with lead and he’s lining up another target.

In this case, the shooter had clear tactical advantages and complete control of the situation.

...as the case in the cafe where an older man shot at and chased out two would be thugs.<

If you are referring to Sam Williams, he was armed.

It the reason why every single law abiding American, should be given a CCW permit upon demand.

They’ll never get rid of the nuts, or guns.

There is no other way for people to protect themselves from this type of thing.

An Israeli security expert said that most thugs were poor shot and that you were more likely to survive if you resists.

This was in reference to the fact that you are more likely to die in a secondary crime scene than a first one.

When you have what appears a commando spraying bullets at you decked out in a gas mask, body. Armor, etc, explosions, no one. Is taking that guy down.

fantasy land if you think someone is going to take that guy down.

Its not pointless or stupid...It is a discussion and I already have learned a lot and rethought some of my opinions and attitudes.

It raises other issues, safety, our society, gun laws, parenting...

and it is a way to deal with the anxiety or sadness about this situation...to try to cope with the reality that sometimes stuff, awful stuff, happens in life and we have no control over that.
