Man destroys his 40,000 square-foot lawn after mistakenly buying weed AND grass killer

A once green fingered Minnesota man is ruing not reading the labels on the weed killer he bought after it killed all the grass on his 40,000 square foot lawn.

Turning the previously lush green grass to dead, arid scrubland, Lake Elmo resident Rob Olson only wanted to get rid of the weeds from his two and a half acre lawn.

Instead, Olson says three employees at Dege Garden Centre consulted with him about which weed product to buy and fatefully he purchased five bottles of the multi-purpose killer at $35 a pop.

The weed killer in fact contained a pre-emergent grass killer too which not only destroyed the grass but will prevent it from being resseeded or sodded for up to six months.

Having applied the product to his garden, Olson observed the grass begin to fade and called up the garden centre to demand to know what had happened.

Upon realising his mistake, Olson became furious with Ferti-lome, the makers of the dual grass and weed killer, which Olson claims is not clearly marked.

In an email a spokesman for Ferti-lome said that instructions are 'related directly to the product' and are contained in a booklet which is attached to the back of the bottle.

To be fair, they should probably make the “KILLS YOUR GRASS” thing just a bit more prominent on the packaging.

My understanding is that the white clover will not maintain complete coverage due to the fact that the clover will improve the soil by fixing nitrogen out of the air. Then more aggressive plants will out compete the clover in the areas where the soil has been improved.

However, I have been looking to do what you've done. May i ask where you purchased the seeds?

Looks like he missed some spots. The work of an amateur.

Since they don’t have a “before” shot, I do wonder what his grass looked like previously. Likewise I wonder if it wasn’t intentional and a stunt - as often happens in these kind of stories.

By the way the drought has killed all of my own, my lawn is brown too and crackles when I walk on it.

Have you ever considered watering your lawn? If you install a sprinkler system all you have to do is program it and it does all the work.

You know, you have to get news like this from FOREIGN sources, because our media JUST WON'T REPORT IT.

Biased bastards.

In my college weed science class the mantra was “Read the label, read the label, read the label.”

Yep, RounUp

PLUS > Prodiamine Pre-emergent grassy and broadleaf weed
control.

Not only did it burn down the grass & weeds, but it kept them for coming up again. Article says for 6 months.

Forty thousand square feet is not 2 1/2 acres. If he can’t even figure out how much land he has, no wonder he has problems reading the perfectly clear directions. Of course he’s a Dem—he’s in MN and he blames other people for his own stupid mistake.

P.S.: he’ll actually be lucky if he can reseed in just six months. In the first place, six months is the dead of winter in Minnesota, and in the second, some of those products really lurk in the soil for a long time. They’re kind of intended for places where you really, seriously do not want any vegetation growing for a long time, like patios and sidewalks. READ THE LABEL.

But your lawn is only dormant, When watered it will come back to life..His won’t.

I am glad this made International News.

$16 Trillion in debt, our nation about to implode, war about to erupt in the Middle East, a Dictator in the White House, and some guy in Minnesota has a brown lawn.

I know I can water it, but I do not like wasting water on grass. I water my garden, it produces a valuable food source, I don’t eat grass. So it looks bad, I am not so pretty myself,IMO water is too valuabale a resource to squander on grass, especially during a drought.

Mighty dry here in Southern Michigan. I'm in south central Michigan and we have kids riding rollerblades in the dry spillway of the dam near my place.

Drought forces Southwest Michigan farmers to tap rivers, creeks, ponds in fight to save crops

That happens along about August all across the south unless you have a sprinkler system. It’s the “wet dead grass is just darker brown, don’t worry about it until fall and enjoy not needing to mow” stage.

Came early this year. Crabgrass survives it though, verdant and green as ever, always thought a hybrid variety that stayed green through the winter would be a great thing. There’s not much that kills the stuff, almost in kudzu territory.
