The same way here in the South. I have to show ID every time I get a can of lye just to make my own soap.

And my soap is better than any store bought soap!

Here in Washington state I was recently asked for my ID to buy drano at an Ace Hardware store - they were going to photocopy it and start a file on me. I told them to keep it, went to Walmart and purchased same with no problems.
It is the law in Illinois, stemming from two women who were attacked with something similar in 2008 - one of these gals admitted to pouring it on herself, but the law was passed anyway. The inmates are not running the asylum anymore, they are subleasing it to destruction.
