MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) — Taking tips from the show “Cops,” an Anoka woman allegedly stole groceries and other items from a Kmart so that she could bake with her grandson, according to a complaint filed in Anoka County.

Police said Carla Jean Jellison, 50, of Anoka, has been charged with one count of theft and one count of possession of shoplifting gear, as she was caught with her purse being lined aluminum tin foil on or about Jan. 19, 2012, in an effort to defeat the Anoka Kmart’s security sensors.

According to the complaint, Kmart’s Loss Prevention Officer Brian Lundstrom witnessed Jellison put butter and chocolate chips in her purse while shopping.

When Jellison reached the checkout, she paid for a bottle of water and nothing else, police said, and after exiting the first set of doors, Lundstrom stopped Jellison.

Lundstrom then found two additional items inside Jellison’s purse – two Sonicare toothbrush heads, items she said she stole with plans to sell to a neighbor.

The Baraqqi Depression grinds on.

Grandma forced to steal ingredients for baking.

She probably traded this month’s EBT deposit for booze and cigs.

The problem with learning crimes from Cops is they only show people that get caught.

I would have thought they would have suspected her because she didn’t wear a shirt. On Cops, the guy without a shirt always goes to jail. Seems it should apply to females also...

Lets see...

granny: 'I'll teach you how to bake cookies. First we go to KMart for food.'

Grandson: 'Okay...now what?'

Granny: 'When we get in KMart...you take the butter and hide it in your coat... try not to get caught. Remember we watched 'Cops' to see how NOT to get Caught...Oops.. we got caught...

Teaching the child to shop-lift.

Not cool, lady. I hope you get sent away so that junior learns the lesson REAL good.

What is really sad is this lady takes the time to line her purse in tin foil, then lets the LP guy see her putting the cookie fixins in her purse...

One can read books and watch movies and do all the technical preparations, but a successful theft requires skills - and those you cannot learn from a book. Avoiding being viewed is one such skill; lying when asked about the toothbrushes is another. (There is no easy way for the store to prove, aside from watching, that this particular package was not bought elsewhere.)

That's why when a smart person commits a crime he often makes a mistake that is too trivial for him to even consider. (See Columbo, for example, or plenty of real life stories.) All those smart criminals are still green novices doing their first crime, but people who oppose them are doing the job for years and they know what to look for.
