Word For The Monday, 5/14/12
;In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".
ensorcellment; noun [verb is ensorcell]
>to bewitch: The beauty of the moon ensorcelled them.
Etymology: 153545; < Middle French ensorceler to bewitch, dissimilated variant of ensorcerer. See en-1 , sorcerer
Make the a-ok sign with both your left hand and your right. The left hand makes a lower case b, which means the bread plate is to the left. The right hand makes a lower case d, which tells you the drink is on the right. Also helpful when in a banquet setting, with 12 people jammed around a table meant for 10, and you don’t know which glass is yours.
That is hilarious.
Back in the olden days (1960s) the expression was "the prom." When (and why) did kids stop going to the prom and start going to prom?
How does she know what I call it? Well, since you asked, I have a tattoo down there that says "Wendy."
This book is crying out for second sentences like:
"Intimacy is not in your Pants" but your drycleaner would appreciate it if you took them off first ;)
Really me too, except in full it says "Welcome to New York have a nice day"
LOL! I was going to add that to my post, but I thought it would be more fun to see if anyone knew the joke. Congrats!
i MAY have missed that particular episode of Hannah Montana but i am well versed in many NICK and Disney preteen shows. except i am drawing a blank on the one i liked with the blonde, who is now married to a hockey player and pregnant with his child, and her best friends Miranda and Gordo. she had the annoying little brother.
I thought you were coming out of the closet here. ;-)
We learned square dancing in 9th grade gym. That’s about it for instilling social graces.
i noticed the diff too, and am not sure when that happened. but what’s really hilarious is my 89 yo FIL who has clearly forgotten what PROM is, bc xshub told his dad that xsjr was going to prom, and he sent her $400 saying how proud he was of her “making prom” and that he knows how hard she works, and that mommy and daddy are very proud of her too. he clearly thinks it’s some academic honor she has acheived! we have been roaring about that all week!
I’ve found myself watching iCarly or Wizards of Waverly Place when no one else is around.
Even speaking as IT, “I can feel your pain” — working often from home as today, my own account gets locked out due to comm glitches, and I have to go through hoops (or is it halos ;) to get a senior Admin to release it.
In ye olde dayes, when staff came to my desk with an issue I would be able to ensorcell them with garrulous technical B.S. but now most seem to know more than I do...
Thanks! It was a great set up.
It was Hillary Duff in Lizzie Maguire. She has mercifully turned out to be a non train wreck. I once saw her on a decorating show where someone was trying to recreate her sewing room. When she got stressed out, she went in a sewed things from scratch. OK. Most people just do drugs ( in hollywood....). Good on her.
iCarly is hilarious. Sam is a riot.
Yes, but do you carry ribs around in your purse?
Drake and Josh was a funny show....Miranda was hilarious as Megan, so devious.
Perhaps your father-in-law remembers a time when "making prom" was synonymous with "getting promoted." I'm pretty sure that "prom" is derived from "promotion." I'm "only" 64, but there was a time, before the libs foisted "social promotion" upon us, that the issue of whether you were going from fifth grade to sixth (for example) or repeating fifth, was not fully resolved until you received your report card.
OMG i guess we did too now that you mention it. leave it to the hicks of western PA to teach the fine points of SQUARE DANCING! LMAO!
i am more interested in them learning the order of forks knives spoons! they will dump them all on one side. obviously we don’t entertain much!
i had to email xsjunior to find the name of the show since neither of you were offering it up! lizzie maguire! was that before your time? icarly and wizards of waverly place were just a smidge past her Nick viewing.
Soother, it’s a good thing we are all friends here bc i honestly don’t think you should tell anyone else that, bc it indicates a deep rooted SICKNESS, imo... ; )
But surely, they’ve eaten at restaurants with silverware. They never noticed how they are arranged?
i think our IT dept works from home also, bc i have had one or two tell me that. they can unlock, but not reset passwords, remotely. so i have to traipse down there for the re-set. i wrote down what i had changed it to, and put it in exactly and STILL it wouldn’t take it, thus the trip to the bowels of the building.
Nothing sick about it. Disney and Nick make some traditional, classic sitcoms. That’s all. Regular TV tries to be edgy and vulgar (which has its place, mind you), but sometimes it’s fun to just watch a dumb, formulaic sitcom.
yes, i loved that show! glad she is sane.
LOVED drake and josh! that was a great show and i miss it. i basically wanted Miranda dead though! LOL~!
yeah, but still in this context, she wouldn’t know if she wasn’t being promoted til mid_june. and yes i remember that too, there were kids who were worried they wouldn’t pass. back in the days when we were 64 kids to a classroom with a single nun at the front, who would clap her hands to tell you to shut up, and you had to stand up every time an adult came into the classroom. looked foolish for several weeks when i went to public jr high and had to break that habit of standing for adults.
ok, he’s not here, so i am going to talk about him... LIKE A DOG. Hobbes, who has made merciless fun of me for YEARS now for my little porchrats or whatever he calls my cavs, bc they are not big manly masculine dogs. ok, well guess who, whether for mother’s day or whatever reason, this past weekend, got a pet for his 4 kids. mr big masculine, ima get me a rottweiler or mastiff, is at home today cuddlng a damn YORKIE no bigger than a cantalope as he put it.... so ok, everyone, yes, i am gonna make fun of mr big masculine man and his little yappy purse dog named Max, no matter how cute the little thing is!
Not going to penalize you for that being Neo’s hw bc i know you didn’t cheat, and that is EXCELLENT from rand. A+++
"not much of a guard dog, is it" :D
exactly ; )
Too bad that isn't your wife's name.... ;^)
Wait, I have another one: Shouldn't that be on the backside and be spelled windy?
Excellent!
I knew there had to be a joke in there somewhere but in Texas guys have the full statement plus a map of the city! ;^)
We have cotillion here for the 5-7 graders and they are always desperate for boys since the girls sign up in droves and boys are dragged there by their mothers. My kids thought it was stupid and did not want to do it and I didn’t push. The moms who made their sons go said they wanted them to learn table manners from someone else since they weren’t really getting it at home. IOW, they were taught but thought their moms were nuts and had to hear it from someone else.
Did he also buy clothes for it?
something butch no doubt, bc i have heard he is FIERCE and FEROSH. lmao!
Maybe a NY Jets jersey with “Tebow Wow” on the back.
Puppies have a way of casting ensorcellments on prospective owners.
Okay, but how long did it take you to stop saying AMEN at the end of the pledge of allegiance?
The tiger has a feather duster dog? And I’m going to get our new collie today.
why would scott brown want to change the SUBJECT of the failed obama economic policies that she would undoubtedly vote for? how is scott brown somehow responsible for the mess that the obams has created? not a winning argument fauxcohantas!
oh i’m happy for you! i do think it’s fitting that he who gave me the most crap is snuggling with an itty bitty purse dog!
As usual, I posted after finding the word and before even reading the thread.
Someone’s going to need to post tomorrow’s word, as I’ll be chaperoning my daughter’s field trip.
say “please.”
Bitte.
