For the past four years I have been covering the progression of the global economic crisis with an emphasis on the debilitating effects it has had on the American financial system. Only once before have I ever issued an economic alert, and this was at the onset of the very first credit downgrade in U.S. history by S&P. I do not take the word “alert” lightly. Since 2008 we have seen a cycle of events that have severely weakened our country’s foundation, but each event has then been followed by a lull, sometimes 4 to 6 months at a stretch, which seems to disarm the public, drawing them back into apathy and complacency. The calm moments before each passing storm give Americans a false sense of hope that our capsized fiscal vessel will somehow right itself if we just hold on a little longer...

I agree! I have been sounding the inflation and currency devaluation alarm at home and am unable to convince even my spouse, who will regularly state, “You’ve been saying that for two years now, and it hasn’t happened.”
It would take a Ronald Reagan on steroids, and a decade with a fiscally conservative House & Senate to get us anywhere close to where we need to be economically.
Try as I might, I am not optimistic.
My daughter is down for a visit and I again tried to talk to her about having at least a small cache of essentials in their house so she can get by for a month or two. She says, "Dad, you always say that the economy is going to tank."
I've started to realize that there are going to be very few who are actually prepared; most are in denial and will remain that way until the (just heard Glenn Beck say, "another six months") coming desolation falls on them like a ton of bricks.
So she mistakes my warnings as me "wanting the collapse to hurry and get here". I explain that no I don't, and that we're going to want our standard of living back.
So how do you reach people who don't want to believe their world is about to be turned upside down and their standard of living is about to go down the toilet?
People are tired of hearing about it. I can tell that by yours being the only comment this post has recieved... :)

End of the age is more like it, IMO. The Bible speaks of a wonderful new age that follows this one and speaks of an untold multitude from every nation that do survive a great tribulation.

True. I wonder if the economic downturn after the French and Greek elections is an indicator of what we'll see after our November elections.
Wanting to prepare and having assets to prepare are two different things. If I knew I was almost to that point, I would stop paying my bills and pay for food. But where does one draw the line when there is no extra cash for that 30 days’ worth of food?

Because the Mayan calendar showed the end of THE world and not the end of THEIR world?
Or maybe all the SUV's they drove created global warming and they all died for lack of carbon credits.
In the mean time, make some plans and create a list of items you need. Maybe secure a credit card and leave it untouched until you can see the point where you need to act.
I've advocated preparing for the worst. This means having the skills and basic tools for hiding/living like our nomadic ancestors have for thousands of years.
Start with some basics, some you may already have and others can be picked up from garage sales and thrift shops. Knowledge can be acquired basically for free, online and especially Youtube. Practicing skills can be fun and replace money spent on entertainment (e.g. going to the movies).
Basic items you need are shelter like a decent tent, packs, sleeping bags, warm clothing, transportation (i.e. cart, bicycle) suitable footwear, cooking utensils that will last and able to be used over an open fire, fire making kits, containers for transporting water, a good water filter system, a mill or grinder to turn grains into digestible flour, devices/weapons for trapping, killing or catching game of all kinds and defense (some kind of .22 caliber gun comes to mind), tools like small shovel, Ax, saw, several knives, a light of some kind, basic supplies like string, thread, needles, maps, compass, cordage, tape, insect screens/repellent, medicines, sanitary supplies, salt and pepper and etc.
Prioritize a list of the things you don't currently have and start working on getting everything on you list ASAP.
After you prepare for the worst, you can adjust upwards.
For food, a 50lb bag of rice will run you about $15 and a 25lb of red beans will run about the same. Follow with a decent supply of salt, sugar and cooking oil. You can last months on your body fat and these basic foods. And don't worry about getting tired of beans. After you've went a few days without anything to eat, they'll be delicious!
Everything above can be put together for a few hundred dollars, by looking around and by scrounging. It will require that an individual get off their butt and start working on it though. Things will begin to disappear and the remaining items will become expensive!
Research what the native peoples used in their day to day lives in your area; substitute those items with modern alternatives. If they could survive for thousands of years using stone, leather and wooden implements, I know you can make it using plastic, steel, today's medicines, chemicals, fabrics, gunpowder and the knowledge of how to use them.
There's no doubt in my mind, that the effort to get through this coming tribulation will be worth it, as the prophets in the Bible tell us.
