JCPenney Is Quietly Firing Lots Of Middle Managers Across The Country
Business Insider ^ | 05/03/2012 | Kim Bashin

Ron Johnson's plan to transform JCPenney continues to roll along, and many of its workers on the frontlines aren't happy about the changes.

JCPenney cut a bunch of middle managers across the country on Monday, according to multiple former managers we spoke with. We've withheld their names for their protection.

This appears to be part of the layoffs announced back in January, but it's unclear how exactly how many have been let go. One source says that the number may now be in the thousands.

JCPenney didn't immediately answer requests for comment, but a spokesperson did mention yesterday that the retailer will be “operating with fewer layers of management."

Here's how it went down, according to one assistant manager who was laid off Monday:

"One hundred store managers across the country were quietly laid off two days before they announced the home office reductions and the call center closing. The rest, phase two, happened Monday. They said it was done purely on year-end appraisal ratings, but someone in my store got a higher rating than I did (and was laid off anyway), and also they changed what the ratings stood for this year, and eliminated performance improvement documentation, so that they did not have to wait longer to do this. If my name or even state comes out I will lose my severance."

This is what Circuit City did.

Now they are gone.

I can remember when you could go into JCPenney and buy just about anything other than heavy equipment. They carried a nice selection of guns and tools etc.

Then they went to basically a womens clothes store with a few more odds and ends.

I’m so turned off with JCP anymore. Have found other places to spend my money. Was visiting a family member in FL back in March. We went to Penney’s...the place was near empty on a Saturday morning about 11:00. From there, we went just up the road to Bell’s (Beal’s?)...something like that...comparable to Kohl’s. The place was packed. They had great sales going on. At the JCP store, at least the one in FL that we visited, they no longer have sales...the price you see is what you pay. Realistically, I just don’t think they’re going to last.

Transform JCP to what exactly? What is their niche?

Target seems to have settled into a (slightly) upscale Walmart, in which proprietary brands might be their saving strategy.

I’m not sure what JCP is doing.

Can't have documentation when the criteria is age 50-60 with 20+ years at the company, now can we (just a hunch).

Severance - what's that?

When I was a boy, we shopped Penny’s for most of our clothes. It still has a great selection of quality clothes at decent prices.

We would also shop at Sears and Wards. I still miss shopping at Montgomery Wards. I miss them more than I suspect I’ll miss Penny’s and Sears when they too are gone.

“As part of the corporate cost reductions, J.C. Penney has laid off 600 workers at its Plano [TX] office, and it will layoff an additional 300 when it closes a call center in Pittsburgh in July, according to The Associated Press.

How many government middle managers are really necessary? Some? Yes, definately. All of them, probably not.

***We’ve withheld their names for their protection. ***

Why? Someone got a “contract” out on them?

Their niche?

Well, in their advertisements, there is a lesbian couple with some kids.

That has guaranteed that my Mother-in-Law will no longer shop there.

You might miss her JCP. She came from a family of 14 kids and was raised in a mill village. She has been dirt poor and didn’t even live in a house with indoor plumbing until the early 1970s when she married a young man who had 12 siblings and they had a good year in cotton and could afford to pay for it. She would scrimp and save until she had enough money to buy many, many items from the JC Penney’s catalogue that she and her sisters would pore over for hours. She is a Christian who tithes more than 10% and is ready, along with all our neighbors, to lend a hand to all in need.

But go for the gay money. That’ll keep ya afloat.

And, FYI, the last time we went in JCP to redeem her $10 gift card that JCP sent to her for her birthday, the store was EMPTY. Maybe Ellen will spend enough there to keep you open.

Walgreens is in the process of a huge managerial staff reduction. Lot’s of heads will roll before it is over.

Unless they mend fences with Express Scripts now that they merged with Medco

JCP is a solution for the retail needs of a bygone era. I don’t think there is any form of radical reinvention or cost-cutting that can save it, now. The brand is tainted with the stigma of “cheap” without being in any way attractive to the young audience that likes to buy cheap. Maybe they should have hired Justin Bieber, instead of Ellen. :)

In 1985, I had JC Penney auto insurance. I bought a 1986 300ZX Nissan and they told me they would not renew the policy. I begged, pleaded with them about my spotless record, etc. and they still cancelled. I was able to get on with Cotton States and have maintained a relationship with them since them. JC Penney can suck it.
