When did the umps start NOT to require the 2nd baseman to touch the bag on a double play?

I have noticed this for a LONG time, but I have never asked about it, nor have I ever seen it discussed.

I am watching my Mets against Houston, and the Astros have a man on first. Sharp grounder to third, and Wright backhands it and throws to Murphy at second, and Murphy is AT LEAST 1.5 feet off the bag when he catches it, wheels and throws to first; BUT the ump calls the Astro OUT at second.

When did this start??

Supposedly it’s to protect the fielders. It’s been around a long time. Plays at first and third are called much more closely. It’s a bit like offside in hockey. If they called everything, they’d constantly be stopping play.

Around when Michael Jordan removed the need to actually dribble the ball when going from the top of his key to dunk in the opposing basket.

Or when actually TOUCHING a QB resulted in a flag every time (put ‘em in a dress and be done with it!). Likewise a DB actually defending a pass without getting a pass interference flag.

I can’t comment on hockey, but very few can, since very few watch. Soccer even more so because less so.

And don’t get me started on that abomination to sports, the baseball DH...

Why, hell! The umpire doesn’t even have to call a ball even if it’s totally off the plate. He can call it a strike. But if the runner from third misses the plate by that much, the umpire will call him out.

Baseball is a mysterious, horribly traditional joke.

Head coach wears little boy clothes (what other sport does that?)
Can hit foul balls all day and still have an “at bat.”
Ball doesn’t have to be over the plate any more.
2nd Baseman doesn’t have to touch the bag on a double play.
Players cannot re-enter the game if taken out once.
Pitchers pulled in from the bull pen get 7 or 8 new pitches, even if they’ve pitched out there all night.
Coaches count pitches and usually yank out a starter if he’s anywhere near 100 pitches no matter how well the pitcher’s doing.
Coaches will not put in his best pitcher to close a game.
Wooden bats.
Even though a batter stands there and watches a pitch go by, he can still step out of the box and spend a lot of time realigning his gloves, hat, and pants, even though he didn’t swing and nothing on him moved.
(add your own)

Do they have “instant replay” like football does? Just asking, as I haven’t watched baseball in many years, since the ‘69 Mets in the WS.

We all would be very interested in the size, make, model, caliber and sighting of the gun that was placed at your temple to make you post to a chat thread on a subject you seem to not care about and yet are so passionate about.

Sports is fun and a great diversion for many people. If you do not value them, maybe you should stick to things you care less about. OOpps I mean “more” about...

Get a life.

How about you get some manners. Most new folks try to be a bit more polite to those that have been around for awhile.

Y'know, you must be a troll because NO ONE can be this stupid; but to troll on a BASEBALL thread? Is trolling your hobby? Perhaps you should take up a different one...like knitting, or tatting, or...baseball.

Have a nice evening. Over and out.

I’ve seen it happen even when there’s no one near sliding into second. I also hate the call where the guy making the play at second or third or wherever goes to turn a double play and drops the ball, but because it was “on the transfer” the guys out. I don’t care if you’re transferring the ball, you’re a freaking Pro don’t drop it! I’m a girl and we played fast pitch softball and there is no proximity to the bag rule or transfer rule. And at least a couple times a year you get an ump that refuses to call the proximity rule so either do it or don’t! I went to HS for an entire week with a huge black eye because we turned a double play the right way! If a girl can handle it, an adult male should be able to!

Watch George Carlin describe the difference between baseball and football. That’s why football rules. Just the number that show up for FB games should show why FB is America’s favorite sport. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qmXacL0Uny0
