Naturalized citizens may sway close election.

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – A number of groups hope to add thousands of new U.S. citizens to the voter rolls in several key states ahead of November's presidential election.

The Department of Homeland Security says an estimated 12.6 million people were holding so-called green cards given to legal permanent U.S. residents in 2010, including 8.1 million people who already qualify for naturalization but have not applied for citizenship.

Immigrants and other minority voters helped Obama to a comfortable win over Republican John McCain in the 2008 presidential election.

The "Become a Citizen Now!" campaign began in March, hoping to help 5,000 immigrants complete the daunting application process to become citizens and register to vote. It is targeting foreign-born residents who have been in the country long enough to qualify for naturalization in Massachusetts, New York, California, Florida, Maryland, Oregon, Colorado, Washington, Tennessee, Illinois, Wisconsin and New Hampshire. Nearly 500 citizenship applications have been completed so far.

When immigrants register, they generally show up to vote. More than 89 percent of registered foreign-born Americans cast ballots in 2008, according to the Pew Hispanic Center.

And their share among voters is growing. Among all voters who cast ballots in the 1996 presidential election, 4.1 percent were foreign-born, according to Pew. Eight years later in 2008, the percentage rose to 6.3.

"There has been sort of a noticeable spin in the last couple of elections toward the Democratic party — but it seems mostly because of the way most of the Republican Party has moved right on immigration and the impact that has on the perception of new immigrant voters." Pastor said.

An analogy....a little diversity in population, like alloys in steel make us stronger. Too much and we become brittle and cracks appear.....especially under stress. That time is now.

That is fat too many “naturalized” citizens competing against tha votes people who were born here.

I’ve been to a few citizenship events in L.A. in the past 5 years, even one with thousands at the L.A. Convention Center. My sis-in-law became an American citizen a year ago. Right outside the hallway are tables for the Dems...and the GOP. One quick observation about the GOP table: all the people sitting behind the GOP registration table were white. That in itself is a projection of a problem with new immigrants.

An acquaintance of mine owns a couple of Mexican restaurants, and back in 2008 told me that Obama was bad news for the U.S.A. She said he was a communist, and had received this information from her cousins in Mexico!

If she wants to vote it is with my blessing.

Hispanics and new citizens are not homogenized groups of people, or mind-numbed robots who vote for Marxists. Many of these folks came from nations where jerks like Obama had trashed their countries and driven them out to find a future somewhere else.

Note: I want our immigration laws enforced! I want a wall built and patroled effectively! I want the U.S. to deport illegal aliens! We shall not tolerate being over run by the people of other nations and suffer the destruction of our own!

There is absolutely nothing wrong with people voting who have come to this country through legal means and who have gone through the citizenship process.

Why would you say something like you have? You sound like you are trying to drive them to the Democrat party. Most new immigrants hold conservative views.

If you have never been to a swearing in ceremony, do yourself a favor and withness one. There is a reason such high percentages of these immigrants vote. It is because they love their new country that they dreamed for so long would one day be theirs.

A very large majority of legal immigrants bust their butts working and paying taxes. The work ethic, especially among the Asian cultures is unreal.

Naturalized citizens are among our best citizens.

Wishful thinking. Most of our LEGAL immigrants come from the third world and they vote mostly for Democrats.

California used to give its electoral votes to GOP presidential candidates. That’s unthinkable now. Massive population transfers from the third world, mostly LEGAL, saw to that.

Exactly. Not only that, the GOP is a tainted brand in blue states. I have a better chance of recruiting for FR by myself and my Filipino bud with one small table. Most non-white guys in my circle are conservatives, pro-capitalist, anti-fag and anti-abortion. Hispanics are all of the above. It’s the message that’s getting lost in the image.

I will concede that of those I am familiar with and who registered GOP when they first obtained their citizenship (they became citizens while Bush was in office which impacts immigrant registration) are no longer happy with the GOP.

I was born in the U.S. and I am not happy with the GOP either so I can’t exactly say they have it wrong now.

By the way, who is going to be the GOP nominee for President this year? I have not been paying much attention. Is the GOP going to put up a conservative candidate to run against Obama?

If these legal immigrants you speak of were to come to America abandon all vestiges of their former culture and be patriotic Americans, it would be great.

However, instead they force their non American cultures on us Americans and in large numbers vote for Democrats, thereby proving that they hate America and despise traditional American values.

If you study what many of them went through in their home countries would realize many are more than happy to leave that life behind. The of course are going to bring their culture with them. That can't be left behind. But over time they adapt to the American way of life.

The most notable welcome aspect of American life is the rule of law, especially where the English were not able to establish English Rule in their country.

I sense that you have not been overseas and have not had much exposure to other ways of life. I certainly understand and share your concerns that the American way of life be maintained. That is under assault for sure. Just don't lump everyone into your objections. When you do that, you drive them into the other camp.
