Frequently Misspelled Words on FR (Vanity)
April 11, 2012 | Me

Posted on 04/11/2012 12:22:30 PM PDT by rightwingintelligentsia

For no reason in particular, I thought it would be helpful (or irritating, depending upon your point of view) to post a list of words that are commonly misspelled or improperly used on FreeRepublic.

Feel free to add any of your own.

I realize that this will open me up to greater scrutiny of the orthographic composition of my own future posts, but alas; so be it.

Aid = help vs. Aide=assistant (as in “an aide to Congressman Frank”)

Anointed (NOT “annointed”)

Border (as in the line between U.S. and Mexico) (NOT “boarder” as in the guy who gets a bedroom in your house and dinner for a fee)

Gauge (NOT “gage”)

Huge (NOT “hugh”—yes, I know it’s a running joke, but FReepers still misspell it accidentally.)

Loose = opposite of tight. Most of the time, FReepers mean to type “lose.”

Martial Law (NOT “Marshall Law”)

Tenet (as in “principle”) (NOT “tenant”)

Existence (NOT “existence”)

Existent (NOT “existant”) Remember: “The ‘a’ in existent is nonexistent.”

Poll (as in “survey”) (NOT “pole” as in a stripper's primary accessory)

Principal vs. Principle: Principal = 1) First, or highest in rank; 2) Head guy (or gal) in a school; 3) Main portion of money in finance, e.g. principal of a loan.

Principle = Moral rule

Your vs. You’re:

Your = possessive. "Your mother doesn’t approve of your spelling skills."

You’re = Contraction of “you are” "You’re not likely to pass English."

I’m afraid we purists have lost the battle against “gage.” 300 million US-sold cars all agree that’s the spelling.

Frequently Misspelled Words on FR (Vanity)

When posting supposed "facts" on FR, the poster is expected to give supporting evidence of how those facts were derived.

When you decided to undertake the role of identifying "frequent" misspellings on FR, using a scale of 1-100% of the time, what value did you set as your official measurement for "frequently"?

[Using your data, posters who misspell words at a certain frequency could be given the ZOT, after you flag them to the site owner/moderators of course.]

Are each the words you listed in your post misspelled with equal frequency on FR, or did you discover a "misspelling curve" that can be used to dedicate corrective resources most efficiently?

[If your study has identified such a curve, just think of the ease of ZOTTING posters who you can identify as misspelling certain words at or beyond a specified point on the curve.]

You left it open for others to identify words that they felt were misspelled, so what percentage (1-100% range) of the misspelled words on FR do you estimate your list represents?

[Analysis may show that you need to repeat your study with a broader range of misspelled words. Perhaps you could ask for a Government grant since they give out money for other important studies, like will Cow Farts destroy the environment, etc.]

What number of individual FR posters (1-100%) did you include in your study sample, and what is the correlation between those FR posters you sampled and their percentage of misspellings?

[If your study has directly linked certain FR posters with the majority of misspellings, then you can flag them for a short trip to ZOTVille.]

You listed four words that you believe are purposefully misspelled, and then alluded that they could be a subset of a quantity you called "a few". Exactly how large did you estimate that the "a few" quantity represented in your study?

[The depth of your data and analysis may allow some heavy purging of FR and get rid of as many of those knuckle-dragging freaks who can't spell as possible.]

How heavily did you factor in (1-100%) the possibility that some FR posters purposefully use misspellings as a form of slang and/or joking?

[If we have some FR posters who don't understand the value and seriousness of your concerns, then they probably should be ZOTTED into crispy critters.]

Please provide the full internal data from your study so that the FR audience can evaluate your work, and thus the importance of your vanity post.

[Your efforts to clean up the forum and take out the trashy, misspelling miscreants should not go unrecognized. Surely everyone on FR agrees that only people who spell correctly have anything valuable to share on FR, right?]

My major peeves:

Pseudo-intellectuals who say “begs the question” when they mean “raises the question.”

Pseudo-intellectuals who say “apropos” when they mean “appropriate.”

ANYONE who says “snuck”. The past tense of the word “sneak” is “sneaked.”

In my neck of the woods, lots of folks say “sposably” instead of “supposedly.” I’ve even seen it spelled that way in correspondence.

There are also some fine folks here who say “It needs washed” or “He needs fed” instead of “It needs to be washed” or “He needs to be fed.”

And of course, there is always “alot” - that cursed little mistake from hell that has crept into everyday life.

GAAAHHHHH!!!

There. I feel better now. You are free to stroll about the grounds until you feel at home.

People often confuse “quite” with “quiet”. I see it on the internet, but hear it less often in speech.

They’ll write or say, “Silence! Please be quite!” One wants to ask, “please be quite what?” The word “quite” is an adverb meaning “totally” or completely”.

Another common mistake is to use “should of” instead of the correct, “should have”. “I should have gone home.” It probably stems from the sound of the contraction, “should’ve”.

My current favourite pet peeve, found everywhere: The past tense of the verb to lead is led. It's not lead - if it rhymes with Fred, it's the metal that permanently impairs your cognitve ability if you ate paint chips as a child, leading inevitably to frequent language blunders as an adult. Short version: to lead does not work like to read.

Another on I hear frequently, though not necessarily on FR: hone in on. To hone is to sharpen a knife edge or razor blade. You mean home in on, i.e. to proceed toward a specific target; or, figuratively, to get straight to the main point. Think homing pigeon.

That is all. Sieg heil, grammarians!

I’ve noticed many posters will not add an “s” at the end of a word ending in “ist” to make it plural. For example: “Those feminist are so annoying.” I see it again and again!
