America's Love Affair With Firearms Is National Insanity (Big Baaaarf)
Yahoo! News ^ | April 7, 2012 | Cynthia Tucker

It has been 46 years -- nearly a half-century -- since Charles Whitman, a troubled ex-Marine, climbed atop the iconic University of Texas Tower to use it as a staging zone for a shooting spree. He killed 16 people on and around the campus, including his wife and mother.

The nation, while sobered by a second World War and stunned by escalating political turmoil, was still naive in many ways back then -- halfway through a violent decade that would rend the political and social fabric. The youthful president, John F. Kennedy, had been assassinated just three years before. It's no surprise that Whitman's massacre horrified Americans from coast to coast.

But in the years since, we've adjusted too well to the armed madmen in our midst. A massacre on a college campus barely garners notice outside its immediate locale. Last week, when disgruntled ex-student One Goh allegedly opened fire in a classroom of Oakland's tiny Oikos University, killing seven and wounding three others, the news drew low-key coverage outside California. After all, it was just the latest of several campus shootings so far this year.

And Whitman seems an amateur by current standards of senseless carnage. In 2007, Seung-Hui Cho killed 32 people and wounded 25 at Virginia Tech. By then, of course, the 1999 Colombine High School massacre, during which Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold killed 13 before committing suicide, had long since faded from the news.

Cho came from an immigrant family, but his massacre suggests how thoroughly American he was. (The same is true of Goh, if he is, as suspected, the perpetrator.) Other countries have generated a few homicidal lunatics, but murderous frenzies by gun-toting maniacs are a particularly American form of madness.

Murderous dictators are the form of madness of the rest of the unarmed world.

I'd rather be a gun owner than a victim.

The 2nd amendment was created especially due to the likes of a Cynthia Tucker, or many Cynthia Tuckers.

Reading this just reminds me how many people were and still are killed by gun control. The nut in Virginia Tech kills people over and over and over and over, you have to ask yourself this; Why isn’t anyone shooting back? 2nd Amendment infringement doesn’t save lives-It gets people killed. Always has, always will.

Cynthia Tucker was the resident black, militant female opinionator on the Atlanta Journal-Constipation's staff for 20 years, and a major source of outrage/amusement for Neal Boortz on his radio show. Now she's visiting faculty at U of GA, polluting empty little minds at the university's 'School of Journalism'. Gotta make sure the Left keeps their mainstream market share, ya know.

"As democracy is perfected, the office represents, more and more closely, the inner soul of the people. We move toward a lofty ideal. On some great and glorious day the plain folks of the land will reach their hearts desire at last, and the White House will be adorned by a downright moron."

I am sure we will see many more stories like this, as a
prelude to serious restrictions on firearm ownership.
This is how the Communist operate.

Well Ms Tucker what we love is the United States Constituion. The Founders included the right of the citizens to bear arms and it was the second one right after the right to speak. See they saw the possiblity of a Barack Obama coming along and of people like you coming along and from experince they knew that the right to speak can only be assured if it is accompanied by the right to have the ability to defend that right..

Exactly.

Also add tyrannical warlords, murderous tribal bands, rampaging thugs, hordes bent on ethnic cleansing, etc., etc.

I guess she prefers bombings rather than shootings. Daily occurrence in many places from the Maghreb to Indonesia.

Something wrong with my guns I guess, they've never broken out of the cabinet and gone on a murderous rampage. Only one of many has ever killed anything. My Browning BPS pump shotgun, withe 26" "Upland" barrel. Got a couple of pheasants with it. My previous J.C. Higgens pump killed a lot more.. but I was younger then.

In my 44 1/2 years on this planet i have never been shot at once.
I dunno why exactly, maybe it’s because i am not a lowlife maybe it’s because i don’t hang out with lowlifes
Maybe it’s because i avoid trouble
Maybe it’s because i don’t dress like i’m looking for trouble
I dunno, this article wasn’t written for me but it does remind me that i got to go buy a frigging gun soon.
I keep putting it off because i have to go grovel to my local police chief here in MA to get one.
I’m thinking of sending the missus instead, i have an OUI from 1986 that most likely states that i’m not responsible enough to own a gun here in MA.
unbelievable....
