The 10 Most High-Maintenance Dog Breeds
Yahoo ^ | April 5, 2012 | Mary Bloom

When most of us think of caring for the family dog, we have in mind a sedate walk around the block once a day, maybe an obedience class when he's a pup, a good brushing once a week and lots of hanging out together watching TV at night. And then there is that special breed of dog - the high-energy, need-a-job-to-do, groom-challenging kind that comes in all looks and sizes, but shares one commonality: He is undeniably high-maintenance.

Glad to see German Shepherds didn’t make the list.

My current GS being the massive exception. NO dog is more maintenance than this 1.

But my previous - no trouble at all, except she didn’t like going to strange abodes and not going home. Our 1st 1 Gs wasn’t tough, either, but she didn’t last long. My sister’s have been, but for the same reason my current is. It’s not a character thing - it’s health.

I was just griping about that.

Lately ALL these stupid sites - including “news” sites - do that. We recently ran across some list thing that was 50 long! The nerve of making people go through 50 slides!

Paid 2300 for my sons English bulldog. Have spent more money in maintenance than for the friggin dog. Has to go in now for Ear surgery and palate surgery, another 1800 bucks...

We put our 11year old Doberman female down a year ago...was just yearly check up. If anyone has a Doberman young female to get rid of we will give it an exemplary home.

There are a couple of breeds, poodles being one that has hair and not fur. I think thats why they have less dander, but I wouldn’t bet more than 50 cents on it....:O) I just heard it someplace...

My Dobe is fascinated by my snakes but I’m not sure what his intentions might be so he isn’t allowed to play with them...LOL

[his ears are up and his expression is somewhat ‘soft’ but alert and he *pokes* at them which is ~normally~ a happy gesture but I’m not taking any chances]

The Ibizan Hounds are the ones with the snake fetish.

They stomp to death every one they find.

I’ve managed to intercede most times but didn’t get there fast enough a few times.

You can’t ‘patch up’ a stomped black snake.

:(

In spite of living in prime rattler/copperhead territory, I never saw any snakes on my rides.

Probably either the smell of the Dobes or the sound of the horse warned them off.

My friend in VA has Ibizans too and one of her dogs was *the* snake catcher of the pack.
One day he grabbed a huge black snake and swung it over his head to break its back but the snake’s tail hit the electric fence, causing the dog to instantly drop it and run away yelping while the poor zotted snake crawled slowly away.

She watched all this and I don’t care how many times she tells the story, I still end up laughing so hard my ribs ache.

[the dog never hunted snakes again]

They’re making ‘designer dogs’ from Dobes [Doberdoodles...ugh! just shoot me] so somebody might as well ‘design’ a dog that would be an exemplary mix.

I bet that would make an awesome “mutt”.

;D

The RR standard doesn’t call for such a deep chest as a Dobe.

They’re much more ‘houndy’ in shape so they may have been perfectly fine...at least I hope so.

I've usually had a Lab up till our last two dogs. We have two Rat Terrors or Feist as they are called in these parts. One is full size and generally goes with me when I'm out running errands. The other is a Toy Ratty and she has Chihuahua in her. She is what we call Mommas Pit Bull LOL.

The Toy has also taken on the role of my unofficial service dog when I'm asleep or have my hearing aids out. I'm over 50% hearing loss so she jumps on my chest barking and shaking the covers if someone is outside, the phone rings, or anything she thinks I need to know LOL. She's my wife companion dog though and can easilly jump from the floor into her lap in the wheelchair.

They're great for home security. No noise gets by them.

I would *so* love to have a Rat Terrier.

When I was born, my parents had a toy Manchester and they say I was too young to remember her but I -do-.

Her name was Susie and I remember seeing her get hit by a car on the back road in front of my house.
[I think very small kids know more than we think they do]

I’ve wanted something like her since I was a kid and I fell in love with RTs at the local dog show when I was a teen.

We have 4 Cavaliers and a Golden Retriever. We have always had Cocker Spaniels but now think Cavaliers are the best breed ever.

We had 2 Cavaliers who ate garden mulch as puppies, thankfully not the cocoa hull kind. It was still an expensive lesson in what NOT to eat for those two and for our checkbook. LOL now, crying then.

The vet I used to work for always said that with all their health issues, English Bulldogs would (and should be) extinct if humans would just stop interfering. They can hardly reproduce naturally, and they are always sick and extremely high maintenance. Sadly, this being a USMC community, they are way overbred here.

The same can be said for all brachycephalic breeds.

A friend has a Bully who is way off “standard” and she can breathe just fine thanks to her not-show-quality longer muzzle.

Mine developed his interest in water last summer when he realized that’s where the frogs were.
