I held a gun for the first time!

I was visiting a friend who owns two guns and I held his Baretta. I thought I'd be nervous but I wasn't.
What is the proper stance when firing a gun? I know how to hold one correctly.

Sign up for a ccw class and defensive training class then hit the range every weekend for practice.

Did you gesticulate wildly while talking forcing everyone to duck one or more times until the gun owner took it away from you? LOL!

'What is the proper stance when firing a gun?'Stay at the end that ain't spitting lead.

"As democracy is perfected, the office represents, more and more closely, the inner soul of the people. We move toward a lofty ideal. On some great and glorious day the plain folks of the land will reach their hearts desire at last, and the White House will be adorned by a downright moron."

Don’t point it at anything that you are not ok with shooting. Ever.
Don’t put your finger on the trigger until you have your target in your sights and you also know what’s near or behind what you are about to be shooting at.
Congrats. Be safe. Train regularly.

I held a gun for the first time!Good for you. Now go get some basic knowledge, then find a gun store with a range that rents guns. Feel them, fondle them, then rent a few and fire them. From this point forth you'll be hooked, soon you will be a gun owner and before you know it, you'll be a well versed semi-expert on firearms.

Every time I have introduced a friend to firearms, I make a special point of introducing them to the four firearms handling safety rules.
I have them recite the rules back to me at least three times during the session.
1. Treat all firearms as if they were loaded.
2. Never point the gun at anything you aren't willing to destroy.
3. Don't put your finger on the trigger until you are ready to fire.
4. Be sure of your target and what is beyond it.
You need to know these rules and follow them always.
To: Jack Hydrazine
I didn’t fire it. It wasn’t loaded. I just held it to see what it would be like.
I was at his house, not at a range.

Trust me. I’ll be extremely careful.
My friend’s idiot friend was baked on some of that synthetic pot and was messing around with his loaded gun. he shot a hole through the TV and the wall.
I wasn’t there,thank the L-rd.
I know that guns aren’t toys and that you can’t wave ‘em around.

Good basic advice to which I would add:
Don't ever hold it sideways like the hoodlums you see in the movies. That may be their way of displaying how casual they are with a firearm (and, by extension, how little they value life), but it is appallingly stupid way to control where you shoot.
Accuracy is far more important than looks. There's nothing wrong with holding your wrist with your free hand to steady your aim. An inaccurate shot could not only mean missing the perp, but hitting someone innocent.

For you I think you should use the Han Solo stance. Stand in a semi-crouch with your pistol thrust forward in one hand and your opposite hand stuck high up in the air and behind you.

"It wasnt loaded. " Such a belief should never affect how you treat the gun. There are many sad stories which contain the statement, "I didn't know the gun was loaded".
To: POWERSBOOTHEFAN
Were you told to assume it was loaded until you cleared it yourself? That’s rule #0. See a few comments up for rules #1 to 4.
Stance? Personal preference matters. I use a modified Weaver. (Just Google it for details.)

There’s a gun club for patriotic conservative Jews who want to defend themselves. I can’t recall what its name is, but you might think about googling it and joining them. Freepers are not victims.
Shooting is a LOT of fun, highly addictive. It puts you in a sort of pleasurable alert trance of concentration and focus. When you leave the range, you have the good feeling of knowing that you can protect yourself. Go for it.

Whilst duck hunting I like to use the isosceles stance with my Bofors 40 mm, because it has a little recoil.
But it blows the mallards right out of the trees!
