aybe it's the culture in Los Angeles, but every time I go to a different grocery store, there are so many options for children in the grocery cart, I wonder what's next: A teenager cart equipped with an Xbox? I've seen infant seats, booster seats, plastic cars that fit two toddlers or big kids attached to the front of the cart, and carts that have a traditional seat that fits two kids instead of one.
But even with all of these options, we can never be too safe when it comes to putting our children on top of a shopping cart, where the risk of falling exists. Sadly, a mom in Macon, Georgia learned this lesson in the most tragic way when her baby fell from the top of the shopping cart onto the ground and died.
Clearly all of the above options weren't available at the local Kroger's, as the 3-month-old was in her own car seat seat, balanced on top of the shopping cart. As a friend, and Kroger employee, pushed the cart over a speed bump, the infant seat fell to the ground, killing the newborn. It makes you pause when you think of how many times babies fall off a bed or a changing table, and be thankful this wasn't you.

Only moms can kill their kids and not be charged. Nobody else can get away with it.
>>Only moms can kill their kids and not be charged. Nobody else can get away with it.<<
This was a tragic accident born of ignorance, not “killing.” My mom went to her grave mourning the deaths of my 2 older brothers — one from SIDS, one from Infant Pneumonia. Every day she carried that, and it wasn’t her fault.
I cannot imagine how this mom feels, knowing her mis-judgment cost her baby’s life. The pain must order on the unbearable.
You sir, S.A.M., are a presumptuous lout. I pray, with every fiber of my being, you never know the tragedy of a loss of your own child.
This mother did not ‘kill’ her child, it was a tragic accident.
Killing implies intent.
I was in a store and a new mother had they baby’s car seat perched atop the front seat like that. I told her she really needed to put the baby in the actual cart for safety. She did, but you tell she thought I was nuts. Some people just do not think about repercussions.
Too many inner-city women where I live kill their kids by rolling over them while sleeping. Nobody ever gets charged with anything. How hard is it to make sure the child safety seat is actually secured on the shopping cart if that is the one way you decide to use the shopping cart?
I don’t get this? Another person was pushing the cart? Mom was too busy what? Lighting up a smoke to carry the kid????
>>Too many inner-city women where I live kill their kids by rolling over them while sleeping. Nobody ever gets charged with anything. How hard is it to make sure the child safety seat is actually secured on the shopping cart if that is the one way you decide to use the shopping cart?<<
You continue to conflate ignorance and stupidity with intent. Yes, it might be manslaughter from an extreme perspective, but there is no punishment you and your ilk can subject that will exceed what these women will feel for the rest of their lives.
Seriously, what is your issue?
A baby who dies in a bed with their parent is not killed, it is an accident.
For thousands of years babies have slept with their parents, good grief, have you never heard the term ‘family bed’?.
The “babies shouldn’t sleep with their parents” is a new phenomenon.
Settle down.
Look at your tag line.
Manslaughter is a crime.
Killing babies is a “right” in this country.
It must be. They are doing it every day. And getting away with it.
>>Killing babies is a right in this country.<<
Conflating abortion, the deliberate act of infanticide, with simple unthinking accidents is wrong on just about very possible level. You lessen the former when raising the latter.
They have to be drunk or high. Lots of women co-sleep without harming their kids.
Secret Agent Man, there are such things as tragic accidents.
Since most of the time it’s mom in charge of the baby, of course it is most often mom.
If dads usually watched the baby, it would be usually dad.
Infant care is 24/7 with almost total sleep deprivation and tons of distraction. I am amazed as many children survive as do.
Misfired comment? I think you wanted the one who commented to me.
“My ilk” is the only one on this thread who cares the baby is dead, everyone else is making excuses.
You know nothing of what you speak.
In my town co-sleeping is the new way inner-city moms get rid of their babies. When the same moms keep doing it multiple times, sorry, it ain’t an accident. Nobody charges them because they are black.
>>My ilk is the only one on this thread who cares the baby is dead,<<
Your ilk is the one pointing the finger of blame in the complete absence of information. You know, like the New Black Panthers looking for Zimmerman.
I care the baby is dead but you have yet to offer anything other than racial stereotypes on the how and why.
You are the one on this thread who has apparently never made a mistake that will obviously torment this mother for the rest of her life.
You are also a cold hearted person who can’t comprehend that people are humans. I wish I were cold hearted enough to say that I hope you feel the judgement of your own judgement. Fortunately for you, I am not.
I really feel sorry for you.
Hopefully more parents will think about the consequences and keep their baby’s car seat in the shopping cart.
What they are objecting to is that you claim the mother killed in the infant - she did not!
no you don’t.
you’re just employing the common female aggression strategy of attempting to undermine you opponent’s confidence.
I took my baby granddaughter to the grocery store, only to find out the baby seats had no seatbelts. A clerk told me a seatbelt is too dangerous, so they no longer have them. She told me all the moms put the car seats on top of the cart. I put the baby in a hand basket inside the grocery cart, and things worked out fine. I’m not comfortable with the car seat idea.
Also the story says the car seat was “balanced” on the top of the cart, not “attached” or “secured” to the cart. She just put the car seat on top of the cart without securing it. Just as in the car, the car seat doesn’t do much if it isn’t strapped down and secured from flying around inside the car.
It doesn’t sound like her precious cargo was really regarded as being that precious at all. Why would you not make sure?
The hell she didn’t....
She was negligent.
No I really do
and
I have know idea what that means.
and you are a chauvinist hypocrite: what of it?
Thanks, that is a better description as the story is relaid.
I still want to know what mama was doing when the "friend" was pushing the cart. The story implies negligence.
you noticed that too, huh?
I love the way “pro-life” women morph into feminazis when it’s pointed out that every single abortion in America is the fault of the woman that obtains it.
They are the living embodiment of Sartre’s “bad faith” concept.
The mother did not kill the infant, killing implies intent. It was a tragic accident.
It depends. Most newer carts are designed so that the hook that latches the seat into the carseat base, will hook on the cart and lock the carseat in place. You have to unhook it, just as if you removing it from the base to get it out of the front section of the cart. If that’s what the mom is doing, then the baby is quite safe. Older carts, or plastic ones like at Target, don’t allow for this, so then it’s safer to put baby in the cart or wear the baby.
That kind of wanton negligence is NOT a “tragic accident.”
This was a tragic accident born of ignorance, not killing.
It was an easily preventable accident that occurred due to complacency. I’ve seen a lot of reasonably intelligent people suffer horrific consequences due to complacency.
I’m sure she wouldn’t have balanced expensive crystal on the grocery cart. She should have carried the baby, in or out of the car seat.
If I could get my baby home from China in one piece, there’s no excuse for some creature that can’t get theirs through the fricken grocery store!
That is what I'm saying. To heck with the groceries. Ware the baby.
>>and you are a chauvinist hypocrite: what of it?<<
Maybe by some bizzaro world definition of both those words.
Wag your finger if it makes you feel superior — I see where this thread is trending into ugly territory.
There was a time when Conservatives were better than the Left. It is clear those days are gone here at FR.
He was pushing her groceries to the car. Very common. Extremely common to give a friend “carry-out” service.
Balancing a baby seat on top of a grocery cart is another thing.
Yeah, that’s it.
It’s not that the free pass women have gotten all these years, when it comes to children, is finally coming under fire: it’s that conservativism has degraded....
people are human, and we all make mis judgements...miscalculations....
Agreed - we slept with all of our babies, and the nurses, etc. all said the same thing. If you aren’t drinking or on meds you’ll know!
Although a buddy of mine has vague memories of a nanny of his that would lay down on the bed, with him wedged in between her and the wall while she drank herself into a stupper watching TV!
Horrible tragedy.....this mom has to live, if she can, with the guilt of this accident the rest of her life.....note to self.....don’t be afraid to speak up if we can prevent a potential accident.....prayers for all who loved this child......
>>Its not that the free pass women have gotten all these years, when it comes to children, is finally coming under fire: its that conservativism has degraded....<<
So, what is the free pass here? The mistake by the mom or your making hay out of it?
This isn’t “free pass” territory. She didn’t drive her kid into a lake or drop him from a bridge. This was a flat-out huge mistake, bad judgement (probably from being raised from a “me first” perspective).
OK, tell us exactly how this was a “female get a pass.” Can you site a similar situation where a man made the same mistake and was prosecuted?
Awaiting links...
Somehow, I doubt that will be a problem.
I'm reminded of the young couple my wife and I observed in a Target once.
The infant the mom was carrying began to choke, and the two of them began arguing over why the mom let baby have a skittle.
They continued to argue as I held out my hand for the child to begin baby Heimlich compressions.
They continued to argue as the skittle popped out.
They continued to argue as I wordlessly handed the baby back to the mother.
And they continued to argue as they walked away, baby in arm, without even acknowledging our existence.
To this day it was probably the most surreal experience of my life.
Agreed. If this mother does not know Christ, I pray she will come to know Him as He comforts her.
Things are the same here - it’s most important who wins the argument, or else who has the last word!
Not this pro life woman. However, just because some women kill their children on purpose does not mean that every child that dies is the fault (purposeful) of the mother.
Accidents do happen especially when you throw in sleep deprivation/exhaustion and hormones which makes you fuzzy brained.
In this case, we don’t have enough facts. If this was a purposeful killing, the friend and mom would have had to conspire since it was the friend pushing the cart. Some car seats do not fit the shopping carts or maybe she thought she had it secured. And whoever was wondering where the mother was and what she was doing? Did you never need help with a newborn? Did you never leave your child with a sitter or shop with a friend or relative? Maybe the mother was right there and the friend was helping the mother to the car with her groceries.
Secret Agent Man’s intial comments were inflammatory which is why he got the responses he did. His comment doesn’t allow for the possiblity of an accident ever happening.
It is also true that women that kill their children on purpose do not receive any where near the punishment a father would receive if any at all. That is a gross micarriage of justice and I think it needs to change. Please remember though that intent has to be proven which may be why the women in your area are not being charged.
The entire "tragic mistake" canard.
Can you site a similar situation where a man made the same mistake and was prosecuted?
Sure: Every time a kid gets hurt by getting access to a Father's guns. And it's even MORE negligent on her part because she was physically present at the time whereas dads get prosecuted for not making their inherently deadly weapons, childproof.
“Too many inner-city women where I live kill their kids by rolling over them while sleeping.”
Too many inner-city women where I live keep their babies alive, and then teach them to fake disabilities in school, so that they can get a paycheck. Your statement is false.
