Former Vice Presidential candidate Sarah Palin stole the show at this years Conservative Political Action Conference where she delivered the events keynote speech Saturday. After slamming the President, shutting up some protesters, and saying that the drawn out Republican primary promotes competition and a better nominee, the former Alaska governor took a few questions as she headed for the door following the rousing remarks. When asked by Anneke Green of the Washington Times if she thought a surging Sen. Santorum was a threat to front-runner Mitt Romney; Palin answered that she wouldnt consider him a threat but was still a good competitor.
Green writes that Palin praised the remaining Republican presidential candidates willingness to compete and appreciated their efforts as warriors in the arena.
While still not offering up an endorsement, Palin has spoken fondly about former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich, who she said she would have voted for in the South Carolina Republican primary.

No love for St Rick?
Time for an attack muffin surge.
Long live Srah!
What she probably meant was “thank you” to those trying, but they aren’t much of a threat to Romney because he has the money and the ground crew.
Sad fact
She’s right.
Santorum is no threat to Romney in the long run and is just this week’s not-Romney. I used to think he and Romney could work something out to get more social conservative cred for Romney, which is probably what is holding him back. Neither one of them has much in the way of ideas, but what they have is basically big government, “compassionate conservative” stuff.
The problem with this scenario is that both of them are very ambitious and really want to be president, not because of their positions but because they each really feel it’s rightfully theirs...and have spent years running for the office.
Romney started in 2006, lost in 2008 and has been building his campaign ever since then. Santorum (what has he done for a living since he left the Senate?) spent almost the entire last year in Iowa, dragging his family from place to place to convince Iowans that he was a good family man and thus for some reason was particularly deserving of the WH.
So I don’t really see them coming to any kind of an agreement, but heck, you never know...
Followed by...
Gingrich for President.

I see Santorum as more of a bad rash myself.

Thank you for your support!
Wow. There is some ugliness on this site lately. I get Jim has endorsed Newt but geez guys. Like it or not Santorum is in this race and doing not bad... This site has become a jungle gym. Sad
Of what? Wasilla Drive-Through Regulatory Committee?
City Council Sandwich Squad?
The candidates and other luminaries like Sarah all know Rick personally. To know him is to NOT like him.
I happen to know one of the former candidates from this cycle - and that person agrees that Santorum is petty and off putting - and tells me that is what everybody thinks.
Santorum is not a pleasant person (unless you loved Jimmy Carter) and is not conservative except in social areas. The last 2 “victories” were non-binding caucuses and one primary in which Gingrich was not even competing.
He has always played to Romney, and I think he will probably end up going with him in some way. That’s not ugly, it’s simply how I see it.
Carville is that you?
Gingrich is pretty severely crippled at this point. He doesn’t appear to be able to win outside the south and has already lost one of the biggest states there. Add his main fundraiser pulling the plug and it doesn’t look good.
That said, I still want him to stay in the race if only to draw fire and pick up the states he can.
The ugliness is probably due to the frustration of a few things. My theories:
A: Santorum’s snottiness while pretending to be above it all.
B: Santorum’s followers refusal to admit anything wrong about him.
C: Newts supporters frustrated that their guy self immolated to a point.
D: Newts supporters frustrated that Romney unleashed an unprecedented series of attack ads that no one could withstand.
E: The goody two shoes sanctimony of Rick and MANY of his supporters.
F: The media’s falling for the fact that all four of Ricks’s “states” were among the teeniest and tiniest of voting populations.
Just some of the things that frustrate me, anyway.
“I happen to know one of the former candidates from this cycle - and that person agrees that Santorum is petty and off putting - and tells me that is what everybody thinks.”
Funny, I hear people say the same words about Newt all the time. Like after Florida.
I happen to know a few people voting this cycle and they aren’t into Newt.

“petty of off putting” what is that? I just met him at a rally in McKinney and I did not see that at all. He was at peace and calm an patient. Boring? Well he didnt dance or sing? What a mess
City Council Sandwich Squad?
Up to your worn out crap again huh Ace.
Fixated on sandwiches and Sarah..........You led a really simple life, don't ya.
I'm an Ace!
The Newt fans like to paint Santorum like that. Some of the pettiest, most off putting behavior, was Newt’s response after Florida.
But you won’t hear them mention how his whining turned people off.
I guess this BS won’t stop until after Super Tuesday and someone emerges as the ABR candidate.
I guess I will vote for the nominee. LOL
Where’s the “like” button?
Great post.
dforest, just for conversation- Friend Rick openly adopts the “Richie Cunningham” persona; to the extent he is “mom and apple pie”, that’s fine—— if he isn’t, then people are going to view him as insincere.
Newt, on the other hand, is “the Fonz” - We all know he’s the “bad boy”, but at the same time, many of us feel he’s the “go-to” guy and the real star of the show.
amazin’. Beck’s all over soros like a cheap suit, but soros says romney’s about like obama, and Beck still supports romney. i don’t get it.
She praised the men still in the fight she refused to take part in and would rather sit on the sidelines and play king maker.
Newt, Rick and even Mitt put it on the line and even though we dont agree on which one would be best at least they had the balls to put up with the crap rather than get skirt dirty.
So, my advice to Sarah is lead, follow or get out of the way.
Ok...Flame away.....
Thanks for the heads up...
I didnt check what I was reading...
just more hohum RomneyBot propaganda...

Nothing against Palin, but she doesn't dictate my vote. I do. Santorum isn't perfect, but I know what I'm going to get from him. Newt has good Newt and bad Newt and I have to hope there may be good Newt. Romney sucks.
I don't understand why people keep saying this.
He's conservative on national defense issues.
He's conservative on gun issues.
He's not the most fiscally conservative candidate ever, but he's not the big union guy that some on this site like to paint him as. His AFL-CIO rating is 13%. For comparison, Ron Paul's was 19% through 2009.
Think about it some more...
That's how he's hit me, too. I would vote for him over Romney but that's it.
Palin doesn’t have the credibility she used to.
While I’m glad that she did not run for president, she should have announced her decision earlier and stopped hinting that she would run. We may have had a better field if conservatives didn’t think they had to get out of the way for Palin.
She needs to stop with the movies, tv shows, and dancing with the stars, and get back into office somewhere.
Darren, I haven’t spoken ill of any of our candidates- save Romney. But, as to your point “I know what I’m going to get from {Santorum}”— frankly, I feel the same way about Newt.
Newt masterminded the takeover of Congress after 40 years of socialist Dem rule— that’s just fact. He balanced four budgets, and was the most successful conservative speaker of the house in the past century. So, in 2013, where we are just an inch away from permanently embedding socialism into America through national healthcare, I’m going with the guy who has the documented record of overthrowing socialism.
You feel that having 3 wives is a disqualification- I respect that. My view is, in the face of having future generations grow up in dependency and a socialist society, I can look past a 70 year old man’s past marital problems, in favor of saving the future of the nation.
And meaning no criticism of Rick, he won’t take that stand-—ultimately, he will cooperate with the Boehners and McConnells and Reids-— he did it in the Senate, I would not expect him to change.
Newt won’t give in to any of them. .
He is no star. Sorry.
Fonz, was cool, Newt is another pudgy gray haired old man like McCain.
He won’t fly.
Rick may be good about social issues but he hasn’t a clue about economics. You can’t have a president who doesn’t understand economics at a time of high recession. If you want four more years of joblessness and misery, by all means elect Rick Santorum.
Rick Santorum has a long history of protectionism and coddling union thugs, including getting the steel tariffs through (which harmed the US economy but made life gravy for Leo Gerard, the Canadian communist who heads the United Steel Workers Union and is a top advisor to Obama). Santorum opposed Pat Toomey in favor of Arlen Specter, the Pennsylvania Senator who provided that 60th vote for Obamacare. Most of all, Santorum voted against NAFTA - a dumb move if there ever was one, given that trade has expanded to ten times its pre-NAFTA level. He also voted against national Right to Work leislation, which right now enjoys over 70% support among Republicans in Minnesota who are scheduled to vote on a State Constitutional ammendment on that issue.
Rick Santorum also proposes centrally planned industrial policy that is government statism. All it will amount to is more crony capitalism. Santorum is a big government and big labor guy.
I don’t see how he can claim to be a TEA party candidate.
"This whole idea of personal autonomy, well I dont think most conservatives hold that point of view. Some do. They have this idea that people should be left alone, be able to do whatever they want to do, government should keep our taxes down and keep our regulations low, that we shouldnt get involved in the bedroom, we shouldnt get involved in cultural issues. You know, people should do whatever they want. Well, that is not how traditional conservatives view the world and I think most conservatives understand that individuals cant go it alone." [source]Check out his brochure, 50 Things You Didn't Know About Rick Santorum, where he proudly defends food stamps, increasing minimum wage, stem cell harvesting, college tuition subsidies, bloated school funding, working with Bono to fight world poverty, etc.
"What was my vision? I came to the uncomfortable realization that conservatives were not only reluctant to spend government dollars on the poor, they hadnt even thought much about what might work better. I often describe my conservative colleagues during this time as simply cheap liberals. My own economically modest personal background and my faith had taught me to care for those who are less fortunate, but I too had not yet given much thought to the proper role of government in this mission." Rick Santorum, p. IX It Takes a Family: Conservatism and the Common Good (2005)
"I suspect some will dismiss my ideas as just an extended version of compassionate conservatism. Some will reject what I have said as a kind of Big Government Conservatism. Some will say that what Ive tried to argue isnt conservatism at all. But I believe what Ive been presenting is the genuine conservatism our Founders envisioned. One that fosters the opportunity for all Americans to live as we are called to live, in selfless families that contribute to the general welfare, the common good." Rick Santorum, p. 421 It Takes a Family: Conservatism and the Common Good (2005)
"If you're a conservative, there really is only one place to go right now. I would even argue farther than that. If you're a Republican, if you're a Republican in the broadest sense, there is only one place to go right now and that's Mitt Romney." Rick Santorum, 02/1/2008 [source]
If you see how Santorum positioned himself in his 2006 race, you might not even do that......
I have to agree with this. Palin isn’t involving herself in any of the dirty bloody work of campaigning. I disliked how she stated in the end that we have to “get behind the nominee”. Meanwhile, she only straddles the line and never commits to any particular candidate. If anything, she depresses the process by continually telling us that things should be prolonged and there are hints here and there of a certain moral equivalency amongst the candidates.
I think she secretly supports Newt, and maybe she’ll come out wit ha surprise endorsement at some point. However, I can’t really know her motivations or what she’s doing. All I see from her is half-answers, spectacular rhetoric, but no real commitments. She’s not putting herself on the line for anybody and is playing it safe.
But for money, Newt would be able to elevate this primary issue by issue, and still take it to Romney at the same time.
With the big money freezing Newt out, he is virtually on media blackout and silenced, for all practical purposes.
where did you get that picture ? it’s great !

I'm so scared of what Obama will do unfettered for 4 more years, not having to worry about an election.
I think Palin is between a rock and a hard place. While her support for a particular candidate might be viewed as a positive here, the MSM would latch onto it and use it to tear down that candidate because they hate Palin so much and did everything they could to ruin her and make her look ridiculous. And unfortunately they projected such a wierd image of her that most of the US probably thinks she’s one step away from the mental ward...or maybe the circus.
I think she’s aware of that, and that’s the reason for her reticence. An endorsement could backfire, in other words.
