Thomas Jefferson letter to John Norvell (Michigan's first senator) on advice sought about publishing a newspaper.

To your request of my opinion of the manner in which a newspaper should be conducted, so as to be most useful, I should answer, `by restraining it to true facts & sound principles only.' Yet I fear such a paper would find few subscribers. It is a melancholy truth, that a suppression of the press could not more compleatly deprive the nation of it's benefits, than is done by it's abandoned prostitution to falsehood. Nothing can now be believed which is seen in a newspaper. Truth itself becomes suspicious by being put into that polluted vehicle. The real extent of this state of misinformation is known only to those who are in situations to confront facts within their knolege with the lies of the day. I really look with commiseration over the great body of my fellow citizens, who, reading newspapers, live & die in the belief, that they have known something of what has been passing in the world in their time; whereas the accounts they have read in newspapers are just as true a history of any other period of the world as of the present, except that the real names of the day are affixed to their fables. General facts may indeed be collected from them, such as that Europe is now at war, that Bonaparte has been a successful warrior, that he has subjected a great portion of Europe to his will, &c., &c.; but no details can be relied on. I will add, that the man who never looks into a newspaper is better informed than he who reads them; inasmuch as he who knows nothing is nearer to truth than he whose mind is filled with falsehoods & errors. He who reads nothing will still learn the great facts, and the details are all false.

Happy New Year!

I have to report that after a week of many family get-togethers, everything was very civil and we had open and honest discussions. PTL!

I am sad to report that in the future, I will be exercising my third ammendment rights to all unmarried personnel.

I received this from a friend and thought you might get a chuckle out of it:

To my liberal, Politically Correct friends:

Please accept with no obligation, implied or implicit, my best wishes for an environmentally conscious, socially responsible, low-stress, non-addictive, gender-neutral celebration of the winter solstice holiday, & any other synchronous holidays practiced within the most enjoyable traditions of the religious persuasion of your choice, or secular practices of your choice, with respect for the religious/secular persuasion and/or traditions of others, or their choice not to practice religious or secular traditions at all.

I also wish you a fiscally successful, personally fulfilling and medically uncomplicated recognition of the onset of the generally accepted calendar year 2012 but not without due respect for the calendars of choice of other cultures whose contributions to society have helped make this country great. Not to imply that this country is necessarily greater than any other country anywhere in the world.

Also, this wish is made without regard to the race, creed, color, age, physical ability, religious faith or sexual preference of the wishee(s).

To my Conservative Friends:

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

Becoming a pest, is he? Time to untie the apron strings and use them for whips?

First time I read the third amendment, my heart stopped briefly after the 2nd comma.

Not that I mind sleeping outside.. but I can authorize sleeping in the house, if it's my house. ;)

I remember that. That's about the time we started making fun of liberals and PC. Lord, it took us a long time to drive PC into joke land.

But it is, now, mostly, around here.

I was going through some papers, and found some menus that ATRW folks had sent me.

I want to say thanks again to all those folks.

No snow is good in my book. I don't like the slip/fall part ;)

No commercial pig this year. I've been strongly encouraged to cull some of the ferals here in Texas.

I don't think I'm going to bootleg any of them here (alive and fed up on corn) this year. The city is getting pissy about fines.

And bootlegging Miss Piggy was too stressful.

I do hope all is well with you and your crowd. I know ya'll had some weather a while back, and I know you are locally politically active.

I miss your Iowa caucaus reports.

I’m NOT talking about my own brood. If they acted that way, I would skin ‘em alive.

Nope, the youngest’s fiance had his groomsmen at our house. The single men were rude, crude and socially unacceptable. The wedding is over. They are gone. They are destined for singleness forever.

I’m in CONUS but hoping to leave ASAP.

Happy New Year everyone. I was happy to see the thread back up today. We have been very busy, so haven't checked in in awhile. December has turned out to be the wettest month we have had in 18 months!! Praise the Lord. Last year was the worst drought since 1880’s. We ended up selling our calves early and around 100 cows. I pray thing will continue to look up for us as we will start calving season in about 3 weeks. Cows are still holding their own, so here we go into another year!! We all have our health, and our faith so looking forward to 2012!! Good to see everyone’s posts. Denco

There you are! I was wondering how the year worked out. I remember early on you were having to haul water and then, I saw, the drought just continued and continued and continued. My heart broke for you. I’ll pray that 2012 will be much better and that calving will go smoothly with a minimum of trouble. GBU!

I see Andrea Mitchell stepped in it yesterday when she described the upcoming Iowa Caucus as not really representative of America. In her words Iowa is, "Too white and too rural."

Praise God for the moisture, I know what it’s been like in many areas. We had a party yesterday, had wanted to be out on the back patio, but the Lord decided we needed more rain and I certainly defer to His holy wisdom. We moved inside, everybody still had a good time.

Good luck with your calves.

I need some advice. I have had a recurring problem for a number of years. It doesn’t kick in in warm weather. Most of the time I had bronchitis preceeding. Neither of those two are present all the time.

My breathing sort of cuts off. My chest feels as if there is a band on it. If I am talking or singing, I have to stop, pause, and then I can restart. Sometimes I need to cough once or twice. It is a dry cough.

No fever is present.

I have the problem now but no drip.

I HAVE SEEN A DOCTOR, actually several, ABOUT THIS.

The docs here in the US have ruled out asthma, gastric reflux and a variety of other stuff. When they did these tests, my CBC numbers were all within normal parameters.

The doc in Papua did a chest x-ray, and then an ultra-sound of my abdomen. At least there, in that experience I received a diagnosis: CHRONIC APPENDICITIS and gave me instructions to AVOID VEGETABLES! They didn’t want to remove the appendicix and I still eat my peas.

So, I need some ideas. I am having the condition reoccur now. Fingernails, lips extremities are all pink (showing adequate blood flow and therefore enough oxygen.

Please brainstorm for me.

Do you have copies of your medical records in Papau? It sounds like you need to see an endocranologist and a complete physical. Be sure the Dr knows about your lack of O2 when talking or singing. That’s my suggestion. Have the Dr check your diaphram.
