Mother fined $535 after daughter, Skylar Capo, 11, saves endangered woodpecker from hungry cat

Never let a good deed go unpunished.

An 11-year-old Virginia girl trying to rescue a baby woodpecker instead earned her mother a $535 fine when it turned out the bird was a protected species.

Skylar Capo saved the bird from the clutches of a cat which was about to turn the feathered friend into lunch.

"I've just always loved animals," Skylar told WUSA-TV. "I couldn't stand to watch it be eaten."

When she was unable to find the baby's mother, she asked her own mother if they could adopt the orphaned bird.

"She was just going to take care of it for a day or two, make sure it was safe and uninjured, and then she was going to let it go," said Skylar's mom Alison Capo.

As they were headed home they stopped into a store and brought the bird inside where they incidentally encountered an officer from the Department of Fish & Wildlife.

The officer informed them that the bird was a protected species, and it was illegal to transport it.

Great another Non Law Enforcement individual that is hyped up on their own power.....Did Obama not give her a firearm? Is thta why she didn't pull out a pistol to arrest the little law breaker?

This is beyond absurd. Name and address of the officer, his boss and the first level of political appointee above them. The harassment needs to be shared.

Hopefully mom and daughter will learn like most of us on these pages that until the liberals outlaw living, humans are the most reviled and vile organism to exist on this planet.

:: “I’ve just always loved animals,” Skylar told WUSA-TV. “I couldn’t stand to watch it be eaten.” ::

Irony in action as Skylar ^denied^ the cat a naturally (predator) caught meal. I wonder...is Skylar concerned whether the cat starved to death recently?

The best lesson would have been to NOT involve the damn animal protectors.

This Spring we saved a little redbird chick and after a week my wife gave it to one of the “we care more” officially authorized persons and it sounded like we should expect a call from the LEO. Told my Gal to next time either leave the little birdy alone for the kitty or keep it to ourselves.

Fish and Wildlife officers in Virginia are fully-empowered LEOs. Where I grew up (out in the boonies) they were armed, too. They were the ones out checking hunting and fishing licenses and busting people for hunting out of season or spotlighting, stuff like that. This one, though, just sounds like an idiot.

The “Fish & Wildlife” officer obviously has too much authority for too little brains or common sense. I can speculate about her (the F&W officer) need to show her superiors her devotion to mindless myrmidon-dom, but frankly this is a case of an axe of a law swatting a fly. I hope that this lady requests a jury trial and pushes the government minions to their breaking point.

BTW, if the cat ate the bird, would the cat be on the hook for a $535 fine?

I shoot feral cats on our property all the time and I really could care less that the little girl denied a meal to one of these vermin.

It is the goal of government to punish and oppress people.

Save the bird -- you'll be punished.
Don't save the bird -- you'll be punished.

It is all about force and coercion, and the more laws they make, the easier it is for them to find something you're doing that deserves punishment.

The cat, if a pet, is doing amusement hunting and isn’t missing any meals.

The cat, if feral, is an invasive predator and should be, if we are discussing what is natural, eliminated immediately.

People who feed feral cats should be eliminated also. ;)

It just amazes me how often you really can accurately judge a book by it's cover.

He's got 'douchenozzle' written all over him.

Life lesson #1 for little Skylar Capo: There is almost no situation at all that can be benefited by the added presence of a law enforcement officer.
