The 33 miners trapped for three weeks almost half a mile underground appear in good spirits and reasonably good health in the first video images of them in their subterranean home.

My husband has been an underground miner for over 35 years. He said as long as he was getting paid and there was no management down there to F things up he would be fine.

That is beyond brave, IMO. It must take a particular kind of person to work a mine in the first place. I've visited Carlsbad Caverns a couple of times. Though beautiful and large, the urge to, I don't know, run, scratch my eyes out..hits me before we reach bottom - this, knowing there is an immediate way out.

I read that the escape shaft will not accommodate anyone with a waist size greater than 35”. I am not sure how much exercise the miners are going to get down there over the next four months if they just sit around playing dominoes, so this may be a problem.

I would think shoulder width would be more important.

He's taken me down twice....and that was enough for me. At one of the mines because he had clearance he could take personal friends down. He would take us off the areas that had lighting and have us turn our lights off and be still. I have never experienced darkness or roaring quiet like that ever. It's not for everyone but he loves it.

I don't know but from the videos coming up they do have a long corridor off that room. I'm sure the desire to get out will motivate them to keep moving.

It’s weird how loud silence can be.

They used to do that with tours at carlsbad, and it never bothered me, what bothers me is not being able to get out, to be trapped in the dark.
