Hand gun advice, please

Posted on 03/24/2010 6:44:03 PM PDT by 1rudeboy

I plan on more time at the range this summer. I'd prefer to do so with reduced ammunition costs (I'm a large caliber guy). I know nothing of any caliber smaller than .40cal. I assume that something of the .38 types, or a .357mag might be cheaper, yes?

So here's the deal, here are my required specs:

semi-automatic
9mm, .38, 8mm, .32, .357mag (or something I don't know about)
magazine capacity not important
concealed-carry suitability not important (I live in Illinois)

I just want to have some fun burning-through a lot of ammo. Are there some smaller calibers I should consider? I don't want to plink with a .22--I'm not an interior designer.

Check out the Czech (no pun intended) CZ-82. It's chambered in 9mm Makarov which is NOT interchangeable with 9MM Luger.

It's got roughly the punch of a .38 spl in a small, well made, rugged, and reliable pistol. The magazine holds 12 rounds.

Ammo cost is about $110 for 500 rounds, and that's JHP.

The pistol itself should run less than $250 in a gun store. I own two of them.

They're great little guns.

You practically drew a perfect picture of a 1911 in 45 ACP...Yet it wasn’t on your list. Bad past experience, or is someone feeding you B-S ?

Glock 19. 9mm ammo is cheap and plentiful, and the standard double-stack magazine holds 15 rounds.

Not fancy, not complicated, easy to disassemble and clean, accurate, and absolutely reliable.

I bought the Ruger .380 LCP for myself for Christmas and I thought with the HP ammo it would stop an attacker. Oh and I have a Colt Python .357 and a Browning .22 for plinking. And I’m a female. I think I need to add the Crimson laser grips to my new .380.

I’m a female but I’d have to draw the line at a pink gun. I love my stainless .357 Colt Python with 6” barrel. IF I drew a pink gun, I’d be afraid the bad guy would die laughing.

Rats, beat me to it. I have a .22 conversion for my dad’s 1911A1 Springfield Armory ... at least I can shoot that. I use a Beretta Tomcat in .32 for my personal defense. Of course loaded with Hydra-shocks and Glaser Safeties ...

I love them and recommend them for inexpensive excellent concealed carry.

One of the best bargains on the market.

I didn’t recommend it here because the OP asked for something that was cheap to feed and still had a big boy bark.

not that the Makarov round is any slouch. but the CZ 52 is a bout a dime a round and will hit 1644 fps.

Unless you're saying that I can fire a boatload of .45ACP economically, seriously, it might be possible . . . I sure haven't figured-out a way to do it.

Check out the CZ-82. For the price it’s a sweetheart.

People love to hate the 9mm, but it’s made an awful lot of bad men permanently good. You do want a good HP though. 9mm ball can zip right through up close. Bottom line, try out several calibers and see what you’re most comfortable and accurate with. The fabled “one shot stop” is not what you need to worry about; you plug the SOB until he drops or drops his weapon.

Sounds like you need a .22 caliber pistol unless that is too small a round, though it is good and cheap for practice... several revolver and semiauto pistols available... ( I am a kimber .45 person though I had several glocks and sig-sauers before they went down in the ocean in a ferry accident a few months ago..

If you draw it, SHOOT IT! or else leave it in the holster.

Hey dummy, tell him to get a Beretta 92. Should be plenty to choose from at a decent price. I actually can conceal one, and I’m around 6’2” with a lean frame.

Help me out here: what’s the short story on how to avoid getting ripped-off when buying former Eastern Bloc weapons? I’m not an expert.

Glock 17, or 19.

9mm ammo, plentiful, and cheap, especially if you buy in bulk.

For my own use, I pick it up in cases of at least 1000 rounds as it’s way cheaper in the long run than boxes of of 50’s or 100’s.

You can shoot those glocks all day long, comfortable, accurate enough (competition barrels available too) and reliable as hell.

I recommend getting a couple of 32 round clips too... saves reloading time. ;oP
