Dear Eldrick:
First, sorry to hear about the second most famous crash last week. (Im sure in retrospect, you wish you were with those other crashers at the White House, rather than being eased out of your Escalade at 2 in the morning.)
Second, I know you and the lovely Elin have been ducking the local fuzz in terms of elaborating on what happened and you tried to extinguish the fire with yesterdays half-baked statement but...
Third, as much as you dont want to hear it, your only choice now is to take the penalty stroke and fess up about what happened -- maybe not all of it, but at least, much of it.
Frankly, the statement your released yesterday expressing that This is a private matter, and I want to keep it that way, is a non-starter. Alas, there is nothing private about what you do. Thats the price you pay for who you are.
As any even casual viewer of cable news knows by now, when a celebrity hits the wall (in your case, literally!), there is no alternative but to get the bad news out.
Michael Phelps, Kobe Bryant and Michael Vick did, and they lived to score another day. Martha Stewart and Mel Gibson didnt, and they never fully recovered. And it took Michael Richards three years and a Larry David "Seinfeld" comeback to begin to clear his name. And as to the late lamented Latin lothario Governor Mark Sanford from South Carolina, dont even ask.
So, my friend, as much as you value your privacy and as distasteful as the reality of this awfulness is, you really have no choice.
With apologies, here is the crisis management mantra to which you must abide:
#1. Go Public
You cant not. Those TV trucks outside ....

And how is he gonna be able to concentrate in future matches with gallery spectators constantly asking questions about this?
Has nobody learned anything from Bill Clinton? "The cover-up is always worse than the Crime" - take your lumps and move on.
Why should Tiger have to talk to anyone when this is clearly a matter between him and his wife?
Read my post #1 again
I agree. It is disturbing that so many conservatives seem to think that celebrities owe them every intimate of their lives.
Tiger should not speak to police PERIOD! Nothing will be gained and it will only give the scandal sheets more fodder.
Frankly, I think that if Tiger went public with 1) I have provided FHP with the necessary information required by law.
2) I want to encourage my fellow Americans to stand up for their rights and remember that they don’t have to turn their lives inside out for law enforcement or the media.
3) Shouldn’t you reporters be covering more important things like terrorist attacks on our military or global warming hucksters ripping off the taxpayers for millions in grants?
The left might be flabbergasted, but he’d be an instant hero to the right!
Woot!
Obviously you didn’t bother to read the article.
Because if you had, you would’ve seen that “talking to the police” ISN’T one of the 5 points.
Neither did I mention it.
You can get back on your high horse now.
What’s your favorite crime police hater? What dance do you do of joy when a police officer dies in the line of duty trying to protect people that would include someone like you who wants them all to die. If a gang member confronted you you’d take a baby and say “SHOOT IT! SAVE ME!”
While I agree that his personal affairs don’t interest me, I will say that if I go outside, get in the car, run over a hydrant and smash into a tree, the police are not going to drop it. (run-on sentence off)
Of course the gang banging police haters here will tell you you should shoot the officers.
Only criminals or people hiding something don’t talk to the police.
First rule of fight club - when you need the advice of supposed PR experts, you are, de facto, screwed. Know what you say, say what you know, be transparent and truthful, live with integrity and this stuff (the known elements, accident, 911 call, etc. - not the stuff speculated on in the tabloids) will pass in a heartbeat. The reason he has a problem is that he is stepping back and getting advice like this, trying to use a timed release strategy to “control the message”. There’s no need to “control the message” if you simply tell the truth, forthrightly. Stuff like the wife using the golf club to break out the glass in the back (i.e., hatch) of an Escalade, when supposedly Tiger was in the driver’s seat at the front of a very large vehicle, doesn’t wash. I can imagine she threw the club at the back window as he was driving out of the driveway as a way of punctuating their argument. But if that was the case - say so. He has the cash to fix the window and for that matter, buy a new Escalade with pocket change. No one would have a problem forgiving him/them for that. But this elaborate effort to release information and stiff arm the FHP - just makes it look like something much worse had to be underlying the known events.
Note to self: After becoming world’s greatest golfer and earning a billion dollars in first 12 years as a pro - make sure to tell it straight when the Missus throws a tantrum!
If I heard a report on Evil Talk Radio today correctly, his insurance company isn’t quite as ready to write a check for an “accident” as Tiger would like, and they’re the party requesting a police report.
“While I agree that his personal affairs dont interest me, I will say that if I go outside, get in the car, run over a hydrant and smash into a tree, the police are not going to drop it.”
BINGO! You nailed it right there.
Spot on.
While you are technically correct, when you take the money and fame, you have to understand the downside. TMZ will hound him until someone talks, so for HIS OWN GOOD, he needs to get out in front of this thing. Like it or not. He chose to be Tiger Woods, most famous and well paid athlete on the planet, this is the downside, deal with and move on.
The price of celebrity. Too bad. He needs to man up.
BTW, Woods is an immature spoiled brat. He's been asking for this for years. Does he deserve it? No. Did he paint a big bulls eye on his back? Hell, yes.
Anybody can make up a rumor, you did really well, now slide on back over to DU.
No he shouldn’t. What the hell is he going to say that will make it stop? Seriously, do you REALLY believe that TMZ will quit no matter what he says. HELL NO
Manning up in my book means NOT talking about your personal problems to cops.
Right on the money.
Big deal. I’m sure he can pay it off himself.
Which part of that rant involved public works property?
I don't know what world you live in, but if you ever go through a divorce, and have kids, you'll understand.
My are’t you sensitive. The 5 critical PR moves are crap.
He doesn’t have to talk to “the public” or the media crows anymore than he has to talk to the cops.
He can just keep golfing and ignore the media. They need him, he doesn’t need them to keep winning at golf. And as long as he continues to play well and win frequently, they’ll have to drop their crap questions if they want interviews. Make them stick to his sports performance, private life is off limits.
Chill out, drama queen.
Encouraging Americans to know their rights and to exercise them is not an act of cop hatred.
In the extremely unlikely event that I am confronted by a gangmember, I will explain to the responding officer that I was in fear of my life when I shot the assailant repeatedly and that I have nothing further to say without the advice of counsel.
I suggest you do the same.
What part of I have a hundred million dollars plus, plus, plus, and don’t worry about your silly fire hydrant do you not understand, I believe the Mayor has all the faith in the world that his bill will be paid upon presentation. If not he can put a lien on that 100 dollar house.
It never ceases to amaze me, the number of people who don’t understand Public Relations, or why they are necessary.
If you’ve got a cancer, do you ignore it, thinking it will go away? Apparently, you think that’s a good approach.
Keeping his fly zipped would be a start...
As long as he continues to hit inanimate objects and take his pills, he’s is fine.
When he hits another vehicle- then we can cap him.
Back that up, and you may win the 2010 Nobel Peace Prize...loser.
The golfer guy shows a propensity to be a danger to the public. What if a young child had been run over? Do you take the same position?
Org.whodat is off his meds tonight.
It’s a loaded question.
It never ceases to amaze me that PR hacks can compare themselves to doctors and think others will take it seriously. ROFL.
Tiger doesn’t need the media, he never did. The media buzz around him to make money off of stories they write about him.
He makes money from golf, as long as he remains a phenomenal player, the money will follow. It’s axiomatic.
Think what you want. This is part of what comes with the money and fame. Doesn’t matter whether you like it, it just is.
Ignorance of what? Come on, you can do better than that.
As a general rule, people only care about this stuff if they want to destroy someone. Personally, I’d say that compared to the jackasses who inhabit the public domain today, Tiger is pretty tolerable, and seems fairly decent. I think most people view it that way, and the number of people who actually want to know about this is pretty low.
He needs to simply say he has a wife and a family he loves, and this is between them. Anybody who continues to pry into his private family life will just look like a pr@ck. And more so, as he now seems to be protecting his wife from prosecution, which would imply some type of loyalty. It’s tough to call him out on that.
I hope he tells everybody to go screw. I’d cheer him. At this point, the media is an enemy. The last thing I want to see on the news is 24/7 of every sordid detail I could care less about, of yet another celebrity’s life, delivered as if it is the most interesting thing in the world.
Go get in your car. Run over a hydrant and smash into a tree. Leave the scene and let me know how it turns out.
I think you misunderestimate the public. Men don’t care about his alleged philandering, some admire it. Another large portion dislike the media and their pathetic hounding of people far far more than they disapprove of (again) alleged philandering.
The public can sympathize and identify with Tiger’s troubles. They like Tiger and if he tells the media to piss off, they’ll still like him. And they still won’t like the media, whether they wrest a story out of him or not.
The media is in overdrive and overkill on this story.
I mean people are going to want to know....
Why the hell you ran into a fire hydrant and tree?
Fall asleep at the wheel? drunk? drugs? your car had a malfunction? cat or dog ran in the road?
It’s an obvious question people will keep asking.
If she hit the car window in the driveway before he pulled away the driveway will have glass not the scene of the accident.
He probably had an affair because the brunette is hooking up with gloria allred probably to make money, so his goose is probably fully cooked on that front.
I noticed Tiger is wording things very carefully so he doesn’t look like a liar because he knows the brunette has the goods on him.
You really need to stop embarrassing yourself by trying to put me down with pointlessly careless and stupid statements.
