New Data on the Late Neanderthals: Direct Dating of the Belgian Spy Fossils [PDF]

Abstract: In Eurasia, the period between 40,000 and 30,000 BP saw the replacement of Neandertals by anatomically modern humans (AMH) during and after the Middle to Upper Paleolithic transition. The human fossil record for this period is very poorly defined with no overlap between Neandertals and AMH on the basis of direct dates. Four new 14C dates were obtained on the two adult Neandertals from Spy (Belgium). The results show that Neandertals survived to at least 36,000 BP in Belgium and that the Spy fossils may be associated to the Lincombian-Ranisian-Jerzmanowician, a transitional techno-complex defined in northwest Europe and recognized in the Spy collections. The new data suggest that hypotheses other than Neandertal acculturation by AMH may be considered in this part of Europe. The gives the RC date as 36,000 years b.p., and a well-known ex-FReeper estimates the calibrated age to be more like 40,000 years b.p.

That's "Before Present", which in RC dating means 1950.

Spy fossils may be associated to the Lincombian-Ranisian-Jerzmanowician...

I can understand why Spy magazine chose to use that name rather than Lincombian-Ranisian-Jerzmanowician Magazine.

“BP - is that the new politically correct talk for anti-Christians?”

BP = Before Present

It’s shorthand for saying 30 to 40,000 years ago. Nothing nefarious about it that I know of.

It refers to “before present”; in radiocarbon dating ‘present’ is 1950, the year used as the baseline because that’s when RC dating was pioneered.

If BP were anti-Christian, it would stand for “Before Pilate” or maybe “Before Paul”. But A) it isn’t anti-Christian, B) SunkenCiv isn’t anti-Christian, and C) nothing about this topic is anti-Christian.

Thanks for your explanation. I was familiar with the anti-Christian BCE, but I wasn’t familiar with BP, except in the context of large oil companies.

Back in the Soviet days, Russian texts used to write до нашей эры / до н.э. (do nashey ehry, "before our era") for BC, I guess because of socialism (the anti-religion religion).

You'd think with the collapse of the Soviet Union that this atrocity would disappear, but I guess not.
