I was a really big UFO buff when I was in Middle School and first few years of High School. I have come to understand that, like everything in life, the subject of Alien contact should not be taken at face value. Like Carl Sagan said, “extraordinary claims require extraordinary proof.”
Don’t get me wrong. Considering the billions of stars in the billions of galaxies, there must be an abundance of life out there. Have we been visited? Maybe yes, maybe no. So far, we have not seen that ‘extraordinary’ proof.
The point I was making about Area 51 is that it should be a top secret facility because of its important mission in keeping the USA ahead of our enemies in technology. Because of events like Roswell, it has brought area 51 into a worldwide spotlight!! The US Gov’t was forced to expand the land near there as off limits due to more and more people hoping to catch a glimpse of ET. I find that disturbing.
Well I was going to be a psychologist and was really into Jungian Psychology (I’m sure being as learned as you are you must know what he said about UFOs).
No I apparently do not have the experience you do in regards to the UFO phenomena, and don’t know what a TYPE II ERROR is.
But I must protest your implying that I am narrow and rigid about such things. As I said, when I was younger I fiercely believed that we were visited. If anything I was narrow and rigid THEN and have since become more open-minded.
My ‘cheeky derisiveness’, as you called it and if it was such, was simply turning the other ‘cheek’ in response to your rather strong response to my first comment.

I admit I don’t quite follow you there. If we are to discuss satanic forces and biblical predictions then we should be talking about the evil that has penetrated and subverted America....Communism. It is a philosophy that is truly anti-Christ and seeks to enslave all mankind.
If you read between the lines of my earlier posts, I was suggesting that the fascination with Area 51 was due to misinformation and propaganda put out there by enemies of the USA, either foreign or domestic. If not started by them then it was certainly promoted by them.

A TYPE I ERROR SAYS SOMETHING IS THERE WHEN NOTHING IS THERE.
A TYPE II ERROR SAYS NOTHING IS THERE WHEN SOMETHING IS THERE.
THEY ARE DYNAMICALLY INEXORABLY RELATED. One CANNOT be extremely avoidant and aversive to a TYPE I error WITHOUT essentially making it virtually certain that they will fall victim to a nasty bite from a harsh TYPE II error.
Typical naysayers hereon seem so extremely outrageously blind and rigid; narrow, arrogant, haughty about avoiding a TYPE I error at such chronic constant routine extremes that they essentially are insuring that a TYPE II ERROR in the topic of UFOs will eventually bite them and very harshly and hard.
They seem absolutely clueless about such even when warned.

Ah, I didn’t know a big group comes on to these threads. My apologies again for the quick satire, and a hex on all true naysayers.
I was telling one of the people who pounced on me that I attended the first very large UFO conference in Chicago in, 1975 (76-77?). Ray Palmer, the Hills, Kenneth Arnold (I’m pretty sure) attended, many others too. Had a great time.
It dropped like on a rubber band, a rapid acceleration downwards that started to slow as if against a logrithmic resistance, until it stopped for an instant then sprang back up, slowing the same way at the top. It would pause momentarily at the top, and then start downward again. It also slowly moved around in the sky from side to side from drop to drop as if the starting point was changing slightly. The light was deep red, but not all that bright, and very small. The total length of the drop seemed to be about a few thousand feet, seen from perhaps ten miles away. It was fascinating, actually, a lot of fun to watch and Twilight Zone music would have been perfect. I was laughing because I was utterly mystified by it, but it was 3AM and there was no one to talk to but my frozen telescope (it was winter).

HERE’S ANOTHER FREEPER’S anonymous EXPERIENCE, OBSERVATIONS, DESCRIPTION:

It was one of the most astounding things, if not the most, in my life.
My observation was different than most as I saw the crafts in broad daylight, no mysterious lights in the sky or such.
The crafts were what is called cigar shaped, and I didn’t understand what that meant until I saw them and then I understood.
I’ve come to think that if one viewed a “flying saucer”, which would be more like two saucers placed together with the concave sides together and the convex sides forming the top and bottom, when viewed from the side it would appear like a cigar shape. Go get two saucers and put them together and you’ll get the idea of what I mean.
The crafts I saw, and there were two of them that seemed to be flying in formation in other words keeping the same distance and speed relative to one another, were a whitish grey color, not silver, not reflective, but not perfectly white either.
I viewed them for about a minute or so and then they disappeared over the trees. I couldn’t tell their altitude as I had no frame of reference so haven’t a guess as to their size. I couldn’t see any features of the crafts, just observed them going along. Kind of like a couple of bus loads of tourists I’ve come to think.

I like proof, and while I've seen nothing definitive for any of the above, I don't dismiss them out of hand either. I do believe that there are species of mammals on this earth that have yet to be discovered...Yetis or sasquatch? perhaps not, but almost every year, *new* mammals and lower life forms are described by science. Likewise, I've not seen proof for life on other planets, but given the size of our galaxy, much less the universe as a whole, it seems certainly possible to me...perhaps not in the cockpits of flying saucers, but perhaps nestled in some pool of ooze on a far flung planet, there is something that we might agree qualifies as "life." Certainly, any Christian believes in angels, demons, and that non-corporeal entity referred to as "the soul." In this area, I fall in line with CS Lewis who found the terms "paranormal" and "supernatural," somewhat curious as they imply we have a comprehensive and infallible knowledge of all that is normal and natural...and to believe that is the height of human vanity. I suspect there is far more humans do not know about or understand than what we actually do have a pretty good bead on...

flinging insults and sometimes even very pointed assaults as to folks’ sanity, IQ, idiotic beliefs etc. etc. etc. etc.
ad nauseum . . . essentially trashing threads and chasing folks away who’d prefer to discuss the topic rationally and seriously.
It would be wonderful if there could be a reasonable solution to this problem. I realize it’s rooted in FR’s history etc. However, the persistence of so many naysayers acting like harsh abusive assaultive bullies destroying UFO threads is quite beyond annoying.
IIRC, We now have more than 160 UFO ping list members who’d prefer to discuss the topic seriously and in a civil tone. Most avoid commenting on the threads BECAUSE of the typical naysaying assaults on their sanity, character, IQ’s etc.
The ONLY way I’ve ever been able to protect the UFO threads in the slightest is to throw back at the naysayers a much neutered version of their own attitudes.

It is also worth noting that we have an injured Iraq Vet MD specialist surgeon who retired from a hero’s career as a Navy Vet . . . and went back to Iraq because of his rare specialty . . . who’s a famous person involved in the Roswell crash—who as an eleven year old boy handled the Roswell crash debris samples his father brought back from the crash site the first time on the way with them to the base.
